‪It was the palace of civil power, and today it is still well preserved and home to exhibitions of various kinds. Inside it is richly decorated and retains an Etruscan column.‬

‪The visit to Palazzo Della Corgna, designed by the great Perugian architect Galeazzo Alessi, only covered the ground floor, the internal courtyard, the monumental staircase and two rooms of the main floor frescoed by Pomarancio's pupil, Salvio Salvini, commissioned by Cardinal Fulvio Della Corgna in 1580. The magnificent rooms frescoed by the master are unfortunately open to the public only on weekends. Despite this limitation, the surprise of visiting a contemporary art exhibition inside was great. Below the large ceilings decorated with grotesques and images inspired by Ovid's Metamorphoses, such as The Feast of the Gods and the Loves of the Gods, by Salvio Salvini, there are some works by female artists in an exhibition entitled " Labor of Love". Among the works of Maria Marshall, the video "I should be older than all of you", suggests, through the image of a child lying inside a box framed by moving snakes, the looming danger that threatens the innocence. The guide's reflection on the comparison with the baroque tradition of Caravaggio is appropriate, such as the Madonna dei Palafrenieri, in the gesture of baby Jesus trampling the serpent. Even the violent chromatic contrasts, the drape that covers the child, seem to recall the Baroque tradition, while the geometric container in which the scene takes place is a clear reference to the works of Donald Judd, exponent of 1960s Minimalism and Mark Rotchko, pioneer of Abstract Expressionism. As in these authors, Marshall's video communicates a sense of anguish, of waiting for something that could happen, but also perhaps the restlessness of a mother foreseeing the difficulties that her innocent child will have to face in the world.
World-famous Italian artist, the photographer Letizia Battaglia is present in the exhibition with some splendid black and white images that express the beauty and purity of love in all its forms, as in "Naples. 1990", in the embrace of a mother with her baby on her lap, or as in the hugs between two children in "Il vicolo. Palermo, 1982", or "Ulivi. San Mauro Castelverde, 1983".
On the contrary, other very powerful images recall the exasperated violence that the artist witnessed in the most difficult years of her Palermo, the years of lead and the mafia massacres. As in the beautiful black and white portrait of Rosaria Costa, widow of Giovanni Falcone's escort agent, Vito Schifani, killed in the Capaci attack in 1982. We all remember the words spoken inside the church, in front of a crowd of faithful and fellow citizens exhausted by the daily scenes of pain.."I forgive you...but you have to get on your knees..." A woman who finally refuses to mourn in silence her husband who was barbarously killed and turns to the mafiosi. The photo portrays his face half in shadow and half illuminated. As if to suggest the strength of a woman who comes out into the open, she challenges the mafia and, at the same time, invites us to break the silence of silence so that a change can truly take place in civil society. The prestigious sixteenth-century palace, in which Alessi recovers suggestions of the Roman sixteenth century, from Antonio da Sangallo, first architect of the Palazzo Farnese in Rome then completed by Michelangelo, who took inspiration for the monumental staircases, the ashlar at the corners and fresco decorations with grotesque, not only lends itself as an elegant setting for an all-female exhibition, but pushes us to reflect on some universal themes in the language of art. The last work among those exhibited by Letizia Battaglia, "Loredana", a naked body of a woman closed in a cage, located in a room of the palace frescoed by Salvini in 1580, dialogues with a detail of the ceiling and in which the myth is represented of Syringa, the nymph who, to escape Pan's love, asks for help from the Naiads, who enclose her within a bundle of reeds, saving her, but, at the same time, imprisoning her body and soul. The photo, like the myth, pushes us to reflect on the cages that force us... the social conventions, the prejudices of others or are we ourselves the ones who feel prisoners, terrified by the fear of facing the challenges that life poses to us? With these questions, satisfied with having had an interesting experience, we intend to return to visit the other magnificent rooms frescoed by Pomarancio. And who knows what surprises a future visit will reserve for us...‬

‪I note among the various reviews a certain confusion between the palace in question and that of Castiglione del Lago, which always belonged to the same Della Corgna family, decidedly more beautiful, richer in frescoes and with a priceless view of Lake Trasimeno. I would say that the Palazzo in Città della Pieve is a bit like the poorer brother, even if two rooms and the staircase have finely frescoed ceilings. I visited the palace on the occasion of the Perugino exhibition whose apparatus did not allow the rooms to be well appreciated as a whole. In normal times it can only be visited with a guide and you have to ask at the tourist information office.‬

‪beautiful palace with beautifully frescoed halls that are different from each other. You can breathe the history of the lords of the time and the beauty that comes with it. Then with a tunnel marked with a traffic light to allow alternate passage you arrive at the castle walls...breathtaking view of Lake Trasimeno. All very beautiful. Worth the ticket price.‬
