With several routes to choose from and only a moderate level of fitness these walks to various spots on the Fell are very good. The tree line is pleasing without being sensational. The occasional contact with water, the rocky gorge or a Reindeer the highlights of our walks.

Urho Kekkonen 🌲🌲 certainly represents a top-level attraction in Finnish Lapland 🇫🇮. Specifically, it is one of the largest and most important national parks in the Scandinavian state. Established in 1983 and named after the former president of the republic Urho Kaleva Kekkonen, it has a total area of 2550 km² extending into the municipalities of Inari, Sodankylä (both included in the District of Northern Lapland) and Savukoski (instead part of the District of Eastern Lapland). Our experience in this regard refers to the recent stay we enjoyed in the village of Saariselkä, the location of the aforementioned Inari. In fact, the travel package included four excursions, one on horseback 🐴, one with snowshoes and two on a snowmobile. Although the boundaries of the park are not entirely clear to me 🌲🌲 (I did not notice perimeter networks or specific access gates), I believe that at least two of them (both organized by the Lapland Safaris agency 🫎) took place within area thereof. The first (by snowmobile), set for Saturday 23 March with meeting at 7.45pm, lasted three hours and took place along a special route reserved for Lapland Safaris itself 🫎 (some signs 🪧 gave an account of this). Having arrived on time and ready for the meeting time (we had in fact collected our clothing 🧤🧦🥾 that same morning), we read 👀 the rules of conduct and signed the relevant consent/discharge of responsibility form 📝. After waiting for all the participants (about fifteen, many of whom were also significantly late 😒), we moved on foot 🚶🏻♂️🚶🏻♀️🚶🏻 towards a nearby parking area dedicated to snowmobiles, where, following a brief explanation on the use of the means of transport and the methods of visit, we finally left for our adventure. Along the way we stopped several times to be able to scan the sky and take appropriate photos 📸 (the objective was to glimpse the Northern Lights 🌌), always escorted by our two excellent guides (a boy 🧔🏻 and his colleague 👩🏼, whose names I don't remember). At a certain point, having reached a small circular clearing, we parked the snowmobiles and reached a semi-open wooden shed 🛖; here our guides, equipped with everything necessary, lit a nice fire 🔥 and set up a grill with frankfurters and hot cloudberry juice on it 🫖 for everyone (extract based on berries similar to red fruits widespread in Scandinavia, Russia 🇷🇺, Canada 🇨🇦 and Alaska). Nice convivial moment to end our excursion in style. It should be specified that the route winds through the last offshoots of the town of Saariselkä (in the very first part), large wild expanses completely covered in snow ❄️ and wooded areas 🌲🌲. At the intersections with carriage roads, one of the guides (usually the girl 👩🏼) would get off her snowmobile to block 🤚🏻 any cars in transit 🚘 and thus allow our group to proceed safely (with the boy 🧔🏻 always in head of the group). It's exciting to drive these unusual means of transport (all with the "Lynx" brand and with 600 cc engines) in a peculiar context like the one in question; nothing too complicated, of course, but the handlebars must be controlled firmly to constantly straighten the trajectory (in this sense the driving, with the necessary differences, can vaguely recall that of quods in the desert 🏜). The snowshoe tour instead took place the following evening (therefore Sunday 24th) practically alone, since we were the only participants. We were led by a young and friendly 👩🏼 Dutch 🇳🇱 girl who, welcoming us, immediately accompanied us to try snowshoes. Our walk 🚶🏼♀️🚶🏻♀️🚶🏻♂️ pleasantly lasted for an hour and a half along beaten paths and off-piste excursions in the middle of the woods 🌲🌲; The explanations given to us on the peculiarities of the place were very exhaustive and interesting, also in an atmosphere of great cordiality. Furthermore, even in this case there was a short stop with tasting 😋 of the hot juice in the cup. I must say that this experience certainly proved to be more relaxing 🙂 than the one on a snowmobile, partly due to the fact that I practically didn't suffer from the cold 🥶❄️ (even though the temperature 🌡, in the order of -15°, was even lower than that of the previous evening), but also for being able to admire the magnificent phenomenon of the Northern Lights with much more tranquility 🌌. In this regard, it is then incredible how the colors of the same 🌌 appear decidedly more intense in photos than in real life, as if the lens 📸 was able to capture a chromatic range inaccessible to the human 👁 eye. The service offered by the agency also includes the supply of ad hoc clothing to face the harsh external temperatures 🥶❄️ (thermal suit, gloves 🧤, hat, socks 🧦, boots 🥾 and, for the snowmobile ride, also balaclava and helmet with visor reclining 🪖); the material can be returned immediately after the excursion or the following day, in this case placing it in a special bag to then leave in a trolley next to the agency entrance. The rates are clearly high (159 euros 💶 each for the snowmobile excursion and 82 for the snowshoe excursion), but still linked to the cost of local living and the exclusivity of the experiences offered. Furthermore, on Sunday afternoon we had already treated ourselves to a long walk 🚶🏻♂️🚶🏻♀️ from our hotel (the Lapland Hotels Riekonlinna 🏨) to the "Tervetuloa Auroraan" (Aurora Lap Hut in Albion language 🇬🇧), a cabin/refuge with a panoramic terrace built between 2015 and 2016 as part of the "Northern lights trail for Saariselkä" project; having arrived in front of the entrance mostly to "look around", we were joined by the manager 👩🏻, very busy with cleaning 🧹, who explained to us that the reopening was scheduled for the following day. On the way back, we passed by a sort of large wooden tipi open at the base on several sides; the same, set up with an educational function, displays inside a series of useful didactic panels 🪧 containing information ℹ️ on the park 🌲🌲 and how to use it (visit itineraries, permitted activities ⛷️🏂, rules of conduct ⚠️🚫 etc. ). I imagine that this structure ideally indicates the beginning of the Urhu Kekkonen to those arriving from the center of Saariselkä. RECOMMENDED experience 👍.

We went snowshoeing here…we walked from northern lights village. There were trails specifically for cross country skiing and others for hiking and snowshoeing. Some of the trails are not intuitively marked but there are lots of maps and markers along the way so we eventually found the trail we wanted. It was very peaceful and lovely…lots of snow at the end of March.

The park has several hiking trails. You can go skiing and cross-country skiing there. There is a place where you can watch the Northern Lights. There are toilets, an indoor space to warm up and a wooden basket that you can use. Definitely worth it. It is incredibly beautiful to be at this location in the winter months. But that will also apply to the summer months. Please note, it is also a walk up and down, we found it quite manageable.

Hello is there any easy trail in Urho Kekkonen Park in winter(october) for people who don't have snow shoes? i want to visit next day fron Saariselka but have no idea

Planning a trip to Lapland from a Helsinki next week mid June. My grand daughter aged 5 is keen to ride a sledge and meet Santa. Is that possible in the summer. Where do we head if we can get to do both.
Thanks
You can always meet Santa there at Rovaniemi (about two hours south from the Urho park).
Not sure about the reindeer though. You can go see them but not sure you can ride them. Maybe a horse ride would be more convenient in the summer.
Look at Saariselka (15 minutes north of the Urho park). They have lots of family activities.

What is the approximate temperature in saariselka in the month of May, we r planning to visit in May-2019, will we find Snow in this month. Also would like to know if we can see Northern Lights in the month if May in Saariselka??
Hi
in general Northern Lights are visible in winter. So September to March are the month's were it's most likely. I've been there end of March for a couple of days and saw northern lights twice.
The temperature in May can get quite warm already. In March we had -22°C :)

Andrò a fine marzo.
Grazie

Anyone know any personal tour guides that can take you to Urho Kekkonen national park for a horse back riding tour? I'm staying at the Kakslauttanen Igloo Village and they offer the same for Eur 144/per person for a 2.5hr ride but hoping to find a better deal.

Buongiorno,
Grazie
Goodmorning,
in mid-july I will visit the park with my friend and we would prepare a sort of itinerary. Can you tell me a website where I can find the map with the possible paths of the park?
Thank you
