Having been similar age at the time to the children who lost their lives in this tragedy, my wife and I took the time to visit Aberfan while on holiday in the area to pay our respects. The Garden of Remembrance is a sobering reminder of the terrible tragedy that took place here 58 years ago. The saddest thing is that that the disaster was man-made and could have been avoided.

Aberfan is known internationally for the 21st October 1966 disaster. Its effects continue to be felt across Wales, and this drives many to visit the memorial garden and cemetery to pay respects. Both sites are immaculately kept and offer places to sit and reflect. Neither can be faulted. It should be noted that the cemetery is on a hillside and as such access may be difficult for some. Should you wish to come here, do so with the correct mindset. It is a place of quiet reflection.

The town of Abefan is very beautiful and very peaceful and is a great tribute to those who died in the disaster of October 1966.

I've always wanted to go and pay my respects. So glad I did. The cemetery is so peaceful. It holds its own unique beauty in such a sad way and yet I did not feel sad but a warmth that is hard to explain. The graves are still attended but the surrounding pre 1966 graves do need a lot of attention. As this is such a unique place I would have thought that this would also be taken into consideration. I will warn anyone with mobility issues. It was hard for me to get to the graves. I could not have even thought about it without assistance as the cemetery is on a steep gradient. I hope to visit again one day before my health no longer permits it.

Very sad to see but lovely to pay our respects. Listen to BBC Sounds podcast Aberfan Tip 7 before to truly understand more of this human tragedy which was completely unnecessary. RIP.

I listened to a podcast recently and decided to visit as it seemed this tragedy doesn't get the public commemoration it should, so went to discover more first hand. It was sobering and didn't need a huge amount of words to tell the whole picture. Worth it.

Although I was 3 at the time of the Aberfan Disaster, I have no memory of it at the time. In recent years, our children have learned about it at school, so we felt it appropriate to call in and pay our respects recently en-route to Cardiff down the A470.
We parked in the car park of the Community Centre, the site of the old Pantglas Secondary School, then walked across the children's playground where 78-84 Moy Road once stood, before reaching the Memorial Garden on the site of Pantglas Junior School.
Though we visited on a rainy December day, the Memorial Garden is very well kept and a testament to the local people who look after it. It is quiet and peaceful, with several benches to sit, think and reflect on what happened there in 1966. There is ramped access so the whole site is accessible for wheelchair users.
Life goes on around the Memorial Garden, but this is a very special place to remember those who died.
We then went on to the cemetery and had a further walk up to the white marble graves, which were renewed in 2007, and are also very well cared for. It was sad to read the ages of the children who died, their lives cut short by this tragedy.
It's not a tourist destination, but it is a place for reflection, the gathering of thoughts, and to pay respect to those who are no longer with us.

I was a child in South Wales when the disaster happened but it always stayed in my mind and my husband actually remembers seeing the reports on the television and we were glad to be able to go and pay our respects. The graves are beautifully kept and the memorial garden is very peaceful. It is so desperately sad and sobering to read the inscriptions but also hard to imagine what it must have been like when it actually happened.
However, whilst we apprecite it is not a tourist attraction, many visitors do still travel to Aberfan and some directions to the two locations and perhaps a little more information would be helpful. As it was we, purely by chance, parked outside the memorial garden and found the food at the community centre both very welcome and very good.
Whilst appreciating that Aberfan has had to move on, it is also important that such a disaster is remebered and that no one forgets what mining has been responsible for.
We had no idea where to go next and ended up walking through the town until we saw the cemetery, which was up an extremely steep hill and I wasn't sure I could make it up to the graves (I did but very slowly). We certainly didn't go by the best route and we were very sad to see the amount of rubbish discarded everywhere throughout the town . We also realised there was a much shorter, more direct and less arduous route between the memorial garden and the cemetery but it had not been signposted.
Aberfan should continue to be remembered and the memorial garden is a very peaceful and respcetful place to do that.

81 of the children were buried in a mass grave and I’ve often wondered where the other 35 were buried and why they weren’t all buried together . I haven’t been able to find an answer to that anywhere online

I believe that the others were buried in private ceremonies as per families request

Hi,
I've seen the cemetery on google maps but can't see a car park.
Does anyone know if there is one?
كُتب بتاريخ 11 يونيو 2018
there is some car parking facilities just outside the cemetery although these are limited . there is parking next to the memorial gardens and a short walk to the cemetery.

Hello, I would like to pay my respect to all those beautiful people who lost their lives in that terrible disaster but was wondering how I find the memorial garden post code as I'm not to sure where the memorial garden is. I would really appreciate it if you were able to help me out.
كُتب بتاريخ 30 أكتوبر 2016
I am not sure just put in postcode for Aberfan . Aberfan is a very small village you can walk from cemetery to the memorial garden easily enough as it is downhill. It is a very emotional experience be prepared . I was visibly upset the whole time I was in the cemetery

Hi Can you walk your dog around the gardens?
Thanks Sue
كُتب بتاريخ 24 أكتوبر 2016
Hi Sue I saw quite a few dogs being walked around the cemetery on a lead by various dog owners. I am sure they all had "poopy" bags with them as there was certainly no mess anywhere it`s immaculate.. Not sure for the Memorial Gardens I can`t recall seeing dogs with owners when we were in there but that`s not to say they are definitely banned sorry cannot give definitive reply. Paul.

Hi I was just wondering what the opening times for the garden is please? also what kind of parking is available. Thank you.
كُتب بتاريخ 17 أكتوبر 2016
Hello, I believe the Memorial Garden is open 24/7 as it is adjacent to the children's play park. The village is small and car parking can be difficult on a busy day
