‪A very interesting little mill. I didn't know about flax milling and how amazing the flax plant is. An enjoyable video of the history of the Mill and a demonstration of the Mill working. We say the raw flax being inserted into the machinery and how quickly it was processed ending up as flax fibre to be put outside to dry and bleach on racks in the paddocks. It was very noisy machinery and deafness was common among the workers as was loss of whole or part fingers. You will be advised to place fingers in your ears to protect them before the machinery is started.‬

‪We visited in 2017 when they had an open day. It was a fascinating exhibition and being able to see the workings of the flax mill was amazing. What made it even more special was that is was descendants of the original families who are still running the open days . Most informative and a credit to those involved and will return for another visit‬

‪We went to the open day, over 200 people there. I absolutely loved the demonstration because we got to see the whole process starting with a film showing the history and cutting of the harakeke and then in the shed they got the stripping machine working (loud) and the scutching machine that refined the fibres more. With this a commentary that only an experienced person could give and the fact that he was a family member was a bonus. Well done guys. Anyone out there got use for the tow, paper makers, furniture upholsterers, sculptors maybe?
Also there was a historic display, farm walk, food and people demonstrating weaving. Loved it.‬

‪NZ’s only authentic flax mill plant operating on its original 1940s site. Showcases 1860s to 1970s flax processing technology in particular flax milling in Southland. Provides great insight into this once highly significant industry. Open to the public just to browse through and see the machines, interpretation panels and historic photos. Working demonstrations of flax fibre processing are available by appointment, or they have an annual open day ($5 donation).‬
