I've known Black Pond since childhood, well before the appalling, intrusive Esher Bypass - scandalously built to motorway standard without even an EIA - was cut through the area, an abomination that should never have been permitted through a SSSI. The noise wrecks the solitude that used to reign here and the filthy road has devastated the once distinctive wildlife.
The triangular pond was created to provide water for Claremont House - the dam makes it very clear that this is an artificial water body. You can just about identify the remains of an old pump house on the NE side. I'd describe it as sinister rather than pretty - a place for somewhat mournful reflection, perhaps - and with good reason, as at least one young lad is said to have drowned in its stygian waters. It had a bad reputation when I was at school nearby.
The pond was indeed used as a swimming pool, dating back at least to the 1890s, when this was the pool and skating rink for boys from Sandroyd prep school, originally located in Green Lane and later Sandy Lane. The Sandy Lane building was taken over by Reed's School after the war, which also used Black Pond as its swimming pool. There used to be changing huts at the foot of the dam.
Poorly controlled dogs are one menace; robotic, fixated joggers are another. I've never come across doggers, but then I don't lurk around car parks. Get rid of the cars and the car parks and you'll get rid of the social problems they cause.

Great for walk with or without a dog anytime of the year. Wear boots in winter months though. We are lucky to have just wonderful scenery on our doorstep

Absolutely wonderful spot for a walk. Mixed terrain and beautifully verdant in spring. Perfect for walking your dog.

The area around Black Pond is now, sadly, overrun with dog walkers (thankfully, not doggers!), with many dogs completely out of control. When dogs and pond water mix, the walking paths turn into quagmires, the birds become nervous and upset, and the aquatic invertebrates and other pond dwellers have their habitat destroyed. Take a walk, by all means, but please keep your animals under control.

As a ‘foreword’, I should state that a lady, below, mistakenly claimed, that this was an area for ‘doggers’. She is in fact wrong - which I - horrifically and worryingly - can (firsthand) testify to - so AVOID the car park on the road from Esher to OXSHOTT, not this road which leads to Cobham.
....Otherwise, merely, stopping to take a phone call, can lead to a horrible situation involving ‘people’ (broadest definition of the word) trying to cajole you into ‘joining them’ for ‘horizontal refreshment’ in the back of a large van. No joke! Disgusting creatures!
Anyway, I digress....this is a pleasant, shady area, in which to take a walk in the hotter months. Stay on the main path, and veer to the RHS, under the pylons to get to the Pond itself.
This used to be a large outdoor swimming pool, many many years ago, before being neglected, and becoming a larger pond/marsh area.
Please do maintain some mild caution - there are occasionally Adder snakes milling around - primarily near the pylons, so be mindful. They aren’t poisonous but a bite can be quite painful.

Came across the Black Pond while exploring Esher Common, you walk round the corner and down the path and there it is, its absolutely beautiful and well worth walking to.
Its a haven for water birds, ducks, native geese, canada geese, swans and a couple of dogs where taking a dip while I was there to.
Good paths for walking with a buggy or young children.
Visited whilst on my daily exercise in lockdown, the path is quite narrow but if you are sensible you can move to the side and social distance safely.

Popular with dogs, popular with doggers. Stick to the main paths and in the daytime and you should enjoy a lovely walk. The ground gets very dry in the summer and BBQs/fires are expressly forbidden.
By night cars pull up in the car park - I would guess a combination of the doggers and the drug dealers...

Our History teacher at Milbourne Lodge Senior School in Esher used to tease and tell us there was a crashed and submerged Spitfire at the bottom of this Pond. As 8 year olds, we of course believed it.
The actual truth is that it used to be a huge outdoor swimming pool for a sizeable mansion, which became derelict and overgrown into a pond. It’s dark waters give it a slight eerie quality - but on a beautiful sunny day like today, that quality is expunged.
Excellent for any dog who wants a swim.

The pond isn't anything too special but Esher Woods as a whole are one of my favourite places to walk.
