‪An excellent walk from New Lanark to the dam above Bonnington Linn, but you need to be prepared for some steep ascents and descents. I would like to see the various waterfalls in spate!‬

‪A very special walk with great views over the Falls and Gorge, which have a variety of well established trees. Just over one hour to the top and back at a leisurely pace to take in the views and interesting viewpoints.‬

‪What a horrible experience. My partner and I returned to Falls of Clyde after a few years since our last visit, and we previously did visit fairly regularly. We were initially delighted to see the positive trend for promotion of culture and heritage in Lanark, and took note of the 'Discover Falls of Clyde' banners. This really set up expectations and we were beguiled by the prospect of seeing a more authentically restored and celebrated landscape. After all, it is the world-famous Falls of Clyde with all the cultural baggage that goes with it. We were tragically disappointed. It started at New Lanark where one particular middle aged which with a blond bob was perambulating around the main visitor centre and matronly bossing people about and being frequently rude, including if people were roaming around looking for toilets -- 'sorry, please don't go in there, that is a staff area' -- was the response aimed at someone innocently browsing leaflets and exhibits, with no intention to enter or even glance at any staff area. She was far from welcoming and the subliminal message was a power-tripping 'get lost'. We found it difficult to make our way to the portal leading to the falls trail. This was because we were frequently overcome by fumes from people smoking cannabis. No, it was not the apparent tourists. Instead it was wafting out of at least three apartments of buildings occupied by people living at the old mills. As much as this initial 'welcome' benefited from the beautiful buildings and obvious heritage, there was a very clear air of uncouthness in the air from residents and staff alike. You wouldn't really think it was an esteemed World Heritage Site because of that negative air. Entering the trails we made our way along and soon started to notice problems. We counted at least twelve spots where the viewpoints and vistas were significantly obscured, and it was very obvious at most of them that the problem did not owe to this years growth of saplings and the like. It was a good few years worth. It was actually shocking because we walked the trail and never really got a look at Corra Linn. The overgrowth at and below the main Corra Linn viewpoint (beneath the Pavilion) was blocked by young trees. We couldn't see anything apart from a tiny bit of the falls upstream. On getting up to the Pavilion we noticed that the safety fencing and scaffolding was still in place after a long time. Buildings of far lesser importance in many parts of the country are afforded much more care and promotion. In this case it is so dam important that to see it in the present state reflects poorly on the reserve and the organisations linked to it like the World Heritage Site, which admittedly the reserve is not part of. That doesn't matter, because to all eyes and ears it reflects very poorly on all concerned and on Lanark. To make matters worse, while sitting at the Pavilion view point we were attacked by at least four large and scary banded mosquitoes. Fair enough, the authorities don't exactly regulate this, but one would dare say that they should know about it and could be advising on precautions to take and even the covert installation of CO2 machines to make it easier for people to sit in, take a rest, and admire the now mostly non-existent view. Things got worse upriver because the view down to the power station was gone, the viewpoint over the upper falls similarly badly obscured. By the time we got to the Bonnington weir we had really had enough. It was like any other walk in the woods in many places. We hoped to see peregrines, but it seems they are not using the spot just now. That is not the reserve's fault per say, but it certainly detracted from the interest along the way. The trip back from whence we came was actually quite upsetting. We had originally opted for a late afternoon early evening walk to take advantage of the golden light, because it was a nice day. The return trip was at about 5p.m.6p.m., and the trails was filled at intervals with groups of delinquents with bottles of buckfast and wine in hand, cans of lager, the clear smell of marijuana. A few were clearly out of their face and aggressive on drugs. We were taunted, borderline threatened, and so to were other walkers ahead of and behind us. Back in the day this reserve and various other river valleys in the county had ranger patrols and/or rural police services. Public services are constrained now, but at a central site such as Falls of Clyde one would expect some priority to be made. Upon getting back to New Lanark we sighed with relief. Taking a break to ponder we arrived at the conclusion of -- 'Discover Falls of Clyde' -- right enough, for you would have to have a machete to batter through the undergrowth like Livingstone in order to discover anything -- all the while fighting off the aggressive intoxicated natives! Sufficed to say, we shall not be going back unless the Falls of Clyde Reserve and its partners at New Lanark and otherwise seriously get their act together! This is no longer a great scenic landscape, despite its grand scale. Pic of banded mozzie attached for attention.‬

‪The walk does not close. Maybe a visitor centre does, but a walk doesn't close.
Having grown up in Lanark I know the area we'll, and the paths on both sides of the Clyde are fantastically maintained, having frequently.walled them while home these past few months‬

‪Peaceful area, well maintained walking path ways. Beautiful and calming scenery. I was glad to make this trip. A must to visit this place if you are a nature lover. Falls were just amazing. We enjoyed our pack lunches in the middle of our trip. Hiking sticks and a picnic mat would be great to have.‬

‪I took a bus from Glasgow to Lanark, then walked out to New Lanark Village, which is the beginning of walking up the River Clyde to the Falls (note: it's about two miles from the bus depot to New Lanark Village). Although the path along the river is fairly up-and-down, the path is very well maintained and easy to use. The scenery, especially the series of falls, is gorgeous. There were just a few people on the path when I was there, so it was like having the woods and river to myself.‬

‪With gorgeous views along a well kept trail. The falls are stunning! There are lots of different viewpoints to get the best field of vision. I love the fact that there are information plaques all along the routes with information of wildlife and the plant world. Great for children and adults alike. Depending on how fit you feel there are different routes to take‬

‪Beautiful walk and if you go to the end and over the steel bridge and down the other side there are hidden view points which are so much nicer from m the other side. The walk is not circular so after doing the other side you need to turn back and go the way you came. The walk is steep so it could be a struggle for some to complete.‬
