‪Planes landing on the beach‬
الأصدقاء • أكتوبر 2021
‪Watch the only scheduled flights to land on / take off from a beach. The beach itself is a lovely bay with dunes to the west hiding another beach for sunbathing and relaxing. Unfortunately, the airport cafe is currently closed. Hopefully it will reopen soon.‬

‪Call ahead or google the flight schedules to get the most out of the beach.‬
سبتمبر 2021
‪We cycled here and found out the flight times for the next day, Next day came and we the plane land and take off. Lots of waiting around and plane spotters. Enterprising people should set up a coffee shop here! Use the terminal building for the toilet and get an insight into island life with the small building and friendly staff. As the UKs only beach runway it must be seen to be believed. ‬

‪Unique plane landing event‬
سبتمبر 2021
‪It's a strange thing to do but when we turned up it seemed that every tourist on the island had turned up to watch the plane land and take off on the beach., and boy is it a big beach. Certainly a unique airport. The plane was delayed when we visited and despite the numerous tourists standing in the car park it was a pity that the airport staff did not engage with the public to keep us informed. They are missing an opportunity here "to sell" the event, why not create a raised viewing platform for example. The shop/cafe was closed, why not open purely for landings/departure ?‬

‪A flight of fantasy‬
سبتمبر 2021
‪Barra Airport, on my bucket list as being the only airport in the world operating scheduled flights where you land on and take off from the beach.

The airport has more runways than Heathrow and it depends on tides and wind direction to determine which 'runway' is chosen. Although not as common at the moment, any cocklers at the farthest end of the beach need to be aware of aircraft movements.

The terminal building is a long narrow structure with a seating area (was a cafe which has now closed), a booking office/check-in, clean toilets and a rather unique baggage reclaim point. If coming along to watch the aircraft arriving and/or departing remember to bring snacks and drinks. Plenty of areas to watch reasonably unrestricted views of the aircraft movements.

Why not do it in style and fly to the island on a day return with Loganair, or stay longer and explore the rest of the island?‬

‪This runway is a sight to see. We watched the wee Saltire plane arrive, then take off through the water, makes you proud to be Scottish!‬

‪A must-see for aviation fans like me!‬
مايو 2021
‪Aviation fans would probably rate this as one of the top two beaches in the world, alongside Maho beach on St Marten. Traigh Mhòr is a vast and beautiful beach, which just happens to have three runways on the sand (when the tide is out). People come to watch the little Loganair Twin Otter planes arrive from and leave for Glasgow. There are only a couple of arrivals and departures each day so check times before you visit if you want to see them. If you're really keen you could do what I did last week - fly to Glasgow and straight back to Barra just to experience the beach take-off and landing and the spectacular views en route. Bucket list item ticked off right there!‬

‪A Must See on Barra‬
زوجان • سبتمبر 2020
‪This is the only commercial airport in the world where planes land and take off on the beach. We visited the airport and saw 2 flights land and one take off. Amazing. The flights come in from Glasgow and times vary from day to day as it depends on tide times. A must see if you go to the island. ‬

‪Beach with an unusual View‬
يوليو 2019
‪This wide beach adjacent to Barra Airport is an area where scheduled flights land and take-off. People gather at the Airport or on the beach to view this unusual event, which I have seen before in place like the Falkland Islands, but is rare in the UK.
The beach area is also famous for cockle picking and is not far from the famous locations highlighted in the film "Whisky Galore". Its something to do on this most southerly island in the Outer Hebrides.‬
