‪We first heard about this race circuit from a Swedish gentleman racer we met at a trackday at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps.

He mentioned his favourite race track was Gotland Ring - an eco race circuit on the Island of Gotland, Sweden which had plans to continue building to become as long, or bigger than the Nurburgring.

As motorsport enthusiasts who have already visited the Nurburgring and seeing the plague of mass tourism that has engulfed the region, we were curious about this racetrack - eco-mentalist & motor racing are often polar opposites.

Surely enough, when we got there, it was neighbour to a quarry (which is still partially active it would seem) and active wind power on site.

The owner informed us that the race track & facility was built on over 90% recycled materials so they didn’t need to import much in.

The circuit itself is currently 3.2km (called Northern Loop) and consists of many corners and undulations. The owner and track designer has done a remarkable job of shaping the undulations of sweeping, double apex & hairpin corners from a relatively flat bit of land. It is a deeply technical & challenging circuit - if you manage to be fast here, you will be fast everywhere. Such is the reason why industry players such has Honda have hosted launches here, and magazines will rent the facility to conduct their car, tyres & parts testing - it is a proving ground.

We got some helpful advice from Alec regarding the suspension setup & behaviour of our car, as well as some local recommendations to assist us with mechanical work for our vehicle make on Gotland Island.

The best part about this venue is that it is accessible by everyone - you can bring your family wagon and drive the circuit (up to 80km/hr) for as little as 200SEK (~€19 at time of writing this) for a few laps like Touristfarten.

If you take your motorsport more seriously you can drive the track for a whole day (open pit lane) for 1855 SEK (~€160). There are more discounts for 2-day passes. You can also do a half day. On the day we visited there were some motorbikes which had been camping and been there all week riding on the circuit. Thankfully they do not mix cars & bikes at the same time on the track.

You can also pay for Ring taxi laps (Porsche GT3 & Cayman) and professional driver training if that is what you are into.

There are plans to expand the facility to include accommodation where the hotel is above pitlane garages - you will be able to see your car through the floor of your room!

The knowledge & hospitality provided by Alec & Lina are unparalleled - some great stories from European racing series and logistics of creating a venue like this.

We look forward to visiting again in our track-prepared cars!‬

‪GotlandRing is the world's first sustainable race and test circuit. The unique race track, situated in a former limestone quarry, is one of the most exciting and technically demanding track profiles ever realised. The driving experience offered by GotlandRing is Nürburgring Nordschleife like in character and driving pleasure. However, in contrast it is smooth, wide, safe. 100 % of the electricity is used at the facility is derived from sustainable energy sources (wind and solar). The atmosphere is different to other tracks in Europe; more relaxed and flexible in many ways.
