‪I went volunteering at Tasikoki for two months together with my best friend. It was a once in a lifetime experience! I really enjoyed living in the community, everyone is so nice and caring! I also learned a lot about the animals, the forest and the Indonesian culture. I would really recommend volunteering at Tasikoki to everyone!‬

‪Tasikoki aim to rescue, rehabilitate and release victims of the illegal trade back into the wild. I am so grateful to have been a part of that and can honestly say it is so heartwarming to see how much the staff care about the animals. The accommodation was clean, the food was great and the staff all very attentive. I have been 3 times and would go again! Highly recommend this place for volunteering and guests also to stay in the eco lodge with a fantastic view every morning to watch the sun rise!‬

‪Tasikoki is one of the many Indonesian conservation projects started by the inspiring Willie Smits (See his 2009 Ted Talk on Kalimantan rainforest regeneration).

Tasikoki was started in Northern Sulawesi with the aim of rescuing smuggled animals and then returning them to the wild. Bitung is on one of the three main smuggling routes connecting hubs in Australasia, Singapore, The Phillipines and China that go through Bitung.

Willie was also responsible for the orangutan project in Kalimantan accessible through Wow Borneo (see separate 2013 review).

I visited as part of a group and was fortunate enough to meet both Willie and Steven who used to manage Tasikoki up to 2016. They gave a very interesting overview of the various projects before together with their impressive key staff showing us round some of the reserve.

We visited some of the rescued animals and participated in a fun activity breaking into small groups to create “enrichments” to stimulate the animals. In my case this involved hiding seeds in a pineapple stem containing a banana smoothie which we duly hid in the aviary

Tasikoki offers opportunities for education, volunteering and to stay. Overnight stays are in a lodge with a spectacular view over the coast and with its own lookout tower and comes with full meals and a tour of the facilities

A very memorable and inspiring visit. ‬

‪I visited Tasikoki last month with my sons and was very impressed, both with the scale of the operation (25 staff plus a half dozen international volunteers) and its professionalism (a veterinary clinic, fine-tuning of animals' diets, taking in new animals evacuated from a rescue centre in Palu).

Tasikoki is not a zoo, much less a petting zoo: visitors are not allowed to interact with the animals, as this will jeopardise their ability to survive when released back into the wild. Visit to see the good work that Tasikoki is doing, and to admire their animals from a distance.

Tasikoki is run by the Masarang Foundation, which runs a range of other projects, including sea turtle habitat protection & hatching, beach cleanups, etc.

Day visits can be arranged for groups of five or larger. Volunteering opportunities are available for those able to stay for longer periods of time. We were able to stay for a few days, getting a better sense of Tasikoki's work, making friends (and playing five-a-side futsal on the Tasikoki team in Butung), and using it as a base for day trips and Tangkoko and Bunaken.‬

‪This wildlife rescue center ( 55 hectare) has been established in a strategic location - near the harbor of Bitung city with an amazing view on the famous Lembeh Strait - to tackle the cross-border trade from Indonesia towards the Philippines, Taiwan, Japan and China.

Still now, thousands of wild animals from all over the archipelago are smuggled through North Sulawesi, making this a real hotspot for the illegal wildlife trade.

At the moment you can see different species of lorries, parrots and cockatoos from Maluku and Papua, sun bears from Kalimantan, babirusa from Sulawesi, orangutan from Borneo, sea eagles from different Indonesian islands, southern cassowaries and crowned- pigeons also from Papua.

Dr. Willie Smits, born in the Netherlands, is a serious jungle inventor who has revolutionized reforestation techniques and policies world wide. He is one of the most prominent protector of orangutans. He founded Tasikoki in 2004.‬
