One of the most salty lakes in the world. Due to its density and salt ratio, nobody would sink or drown there. Here is the magical place of my childhood memories which is gonna to fade from maps for environmetal issues.

The lake is beautiful and a 1.5h drive from Tabriz away. You will see dry lands, impressive mountains and arid plains on the way th lake Urmia. The lakes coastline is beautiful and full of salt. However, it is full of garbage. People throw away plastic bags, cans, bottles and other crap, so you hardly find spots without pollution. Although this is a generic problem in Iran, it was very present at the lake (st least at the places we saw). We rate it 3/5.

i had a trip to Urmia by my car last month . i do remember i was a university educator and we had a field trip by Tabriz university to visit the bridge construction which was going to connect both sides of the lake . in that time nobody didn't imagine what will happen now for this great lake . actually there is almost nothing remained and by this trend in early future whole of the lake will be vanished and there will be only slat , salt and salt .no doubt this will be terrible for whole area and all greens ,... will be misapprehend by vanishing of the lake . i do not know who can do what ? but it is still too late and emergency remedial action is strongly needed .

What has happened to this like in a matter of years could have taken centuries. Since the lake is so shallow a slight reduction in the volume of water equates to a large reduction in the surface area. The colors are amazing due to the elevated salt concentrations and subsequent life that has spun up. Once a hot spot for locals to come and enjoy, it is more of an ecological site than anything now. A view from above is magical if you get a chance to fly over it.

The largest saltwater lake in the Middle East is located in the northwest of our beloved country, Iran, between the provinces of Western Azerbaijan and Eastern Azerbaijan. This lake is the famous Urmia Lake which is one of the most beautiful natural attractions in Iran and the largest lake in Iran.
Unfortunately, due to global warming, lack of snow and rain, construction of highways on the lake, excessive use of water resources in the region and factors like this, the water of Lake Urmia has dried up.

It is necessary to stop and make a walking tour of the hills surrounding the lake. The landscape is amazing. If you stay until sunset or be at sunrise, the colors must be wonderful. You can also immerse yourself in very salt water or come into it if you like very salt water.

15 years ago I traveled to Urmia and visited this lake. I remember how beautiful it was. Now the water has become less significantly, but the lake is still a fantastic place to visit. My daughters found Artemia in the salty water of the lake! I couldn't believe my eyes watching those little amazing creatures!

Urmia lake separates east and west Aezerbayjan, before the bridge was built, you had to take a 4 hour way to get Urmia, or you could take the ship. Sometimes the water was high up that it flooded over the road so we couldn't pass the water even with ship. Now the water is so low and the salt around it is showing, even now some go camp beside the lake and swim sometimes, the salt is also used for cooking and is a cure also for the body. No ship is passing the lake nowadays.

when the lake was at its best times there were places to change and to take shower. but nowadays due to the lake's situation they are abandoned. so if you are planning to swimm, you must know that the water is extremely salty. so bring a gallon of water with you so that you can wash the salt from your body.
iranian women come for swimm too. so it isnt really a big problem to find a place to change.

I read very interesting report on the lake ! At the beginning of july I shall be at Urmia coming from Khoy and thevday after going to Tabriz over the bridge. I saw beautiful photos of the lake (colour red) ! and also others of the salt around the lake , but I don't know exactly where to see these beautiful views . Shall we see them form the bridge or do we have to go near Bari Resort ? Thanks stefania
Hi there! We are coming from Jolfa today and would love to visit lake Urmia. I understand that it is best to visit on the eastern side of the lake for better viewpoints and in terms of actually reaching the shore? Is this true? Are there any places we should go to for particularly great viewpoints? Thank you so much for any help, really looking forward to it!

Hi Arthur
it depends on your destination. if you are traveling through Jolfa-Khoy road you can't see the lake because it's far from the Khoy city. there you have to travel to south and enter the Ghushchi road. but if you are going to Tabriz the best and nearest place is Kalantari road which is goes through the lake itself. there you can find the view you want. good views could be found around the Eslami island.
i hope it helps.
