Barefoot conservation is a non-profit NGO located on Arborek Island in the Raja Ampat region near Papua New Guinea. This NGO offers you the opportunity to live an unforgettable experience, not only contributing to marine conservation, which is very important nowadays, but you can also acquire diverse experiences by learning about the marine ecosystem, helping local people by teaching them English, tasting the typical food of the region, etc. The facilities are good and the people are very friendly. I had the opportunity to do my DIVE MASTER course in the best dive sites in the world. Not only do you dive, but they also take you to see the different islands of the region, visiting different villages of indigenous people and visiting viewpoints that look like a postcard. The place is a paradise for those who are looking for nature in its most untouched state. The marine biodiversity on Raja Ampat is incredible, in fact just around the island of Arborek alone you can see an infinite number of different species and even things you would never have imagined.
I recommend this place 100% and if you have any questions, feel free to contact me on my instagram: marioferrarig

I loved my experience with Barefoot Conservation in Arborek. I learnt to identify different fish and coral species, had some incredible dives, including with mantas, got to visit local communities and made some lifelong friends. The snorkelling right off the jetty is some of the best I've ever done - with mantas breaching in the distance and schools of bumphead parrotfish so close you can almost touch them. The accommodation was extremely basic, but it was clean and I was there for an adventure - not to indulge in modern conveniences so it all added to the experience for me. If you're a bit of a princess then it's probably not for you, but if you're up for an adventure I highly recommend this expedition and I have just signed up to return!

Siren acted in poor faith using a bait and switch tactic by using my money as an interest free loan for over 6 months from September 2019 through April 2021 when they clearly had no intent to operate the trip that I booked. I booked a trip in September 2020 on the Indo Siren to Raja Ampat in March of 2021. When booking, Siren offered a 30% discount on the trip and promised to move the date of the trip at the same price paid if it was impacted by COVID-19. Ultimately, I booked this trip knowing there was a chance it would be cancelled or moved, but decided that getting a deal on the trip while helping out Siren during COVID when many of their bookings were cancelled was worthwhile. Siren took many months to determine that the trip would not sail when it was very clear this was unrealistic. When they finally made this determination they refused to refund the funds paid for the trip for multiple months and would not honor the deal they made to move the booking to a future date at the same price. I will never do business with Siren again.

I and my partner are travelling to alyui raja ampat Indonesia in March 2020. Do we need vaccination? We both live in Western Australia.
We will be staying with my Son who is the manager of Atlas Pearls on the island. We don't intend to do any trekking into the forests.

My husband and I didn’t have an vaccinations, but we are all up to date with what is required in Australia (we live in WA also). We made sure to cover up at dawn and dusk for mozzies, and used spray as well. We also slept with a mosquito net. You are going to a beautiful part of the world, enjoy!
Just wondering what the best time of year would be to visit Raja Ampat?

Best look at travel advice sites however my experience is anytime
We were there in January and it was fine , one spell of rain in 20 days. Rain is short lived and will not spoil your holiday

We will be on a Wicked liveaboard from Dec 27- Jan 2. Any particular island / dive resort in Raja Ampat that you can recommend for diving after our liveaboard will be greatly appreciated. I tried contacting Arborek & they are fully booked. Thank you.

I went there also with a liveaboard Manta Mae, it was amazing, the ship and the crew. We were nights sailing and during the day diving or doing other activities. The best one for landscape was Waiag, also Mioskon and Pianemo. Arborek Island is nice, they have over there many european young volunteers for protecting the Mantas. I can tell you the spots I’ve dived reading from my log book: Mioskon, Yeben Chanel, Yeben Besar, Waiag Rocks, Mellissa and another place with many Mantas. The marine life is diverse, in Yeben Chanel were huge amounts of fish, many bumphead Parrotfish, in Mioskon I’ ve seen sharks, the worse dive was in Yeben Besar. The other spots I didnt write down.
Raja Ampar was great but the most amazing diving I ‘ve done in Palau, Micronesia.
I hope I’ve helped a little.

Is end of May/beginning of June a good time to go? My only concern is really choppy seas as my boyfriend gets really sick on boats if the sea is rough. Thank you! :)

we went in April. We did strike 1 storm where it was really rough, but ran from it, and were in sheltered waters after about 4 hours. There are so many islands, the boat can tuck behind to be out of the weather. Except for the storm, we didn't really have any rough seas.

Hello fellow Divers,
Do we need to take our own dive gear?
Thanks

If you have your own gear, I would take it. You don't know what the rental gear will be like. That being said, you can definitely rent if it's easier. They will have everything you need.
