Such an amazing experience! I can’t thank Bain and his amazing crew enough! My friend and I stayed on the boat (klotok) for five nights and it was an effortless, beautiful week with unforgettable up close encounters with the orangutans. Bain coached me amazingly with the photography and created such unique experiences to capture on camera. Everything was so well thought out on the boat, the food was incredible with often too much to finish! We really were treated like royalty. Would recommend 100000% thank you so much Bain!!

I went on the photographic tour with Bain and his team and had an amazing experience.
The local boat was in an excellent condition. I only slept there one night and the remaining nights at Rimba Lodge but could have easily stayed on the boat for all 3 nights. One of the highlights was definitely the food, a big kudos to the cook! The only problem was that it was too much, I ate for 3. :)
The other highlight were of course the Orangutans. I didn't expect to have so many close encounters. The memories of meeting these amazing creatures will stay with me for a lifetime.
The only consideration I would say is that you will have a lot of down time on the boat whilst cruising through the beautiful scenery. I am a very active person and expected more trekkings through the rainforest itself. But otherwise I would very happily redo thus trip anytime again.

I have just returned from a magical trip where Arbain and his crew could not have been more helpful. They were awesome in every possible way.
I was met at the Airport by Arbain and after a short drive to Kumai we boarded Arbain's beautiful Klotok. It was spotless and so well setup. We set off almost immediately for the Jungles/Forests where I spent four nights experiencing the magical Orangutans, Proboscis monkeys, Gibbons, Crocodile, King Cobra, Wild boar, Tarsius Monkeys and some amazing bird life.
Arbain went out of his way to find the best spots and always ensure I had the best possible camera angles. We were never rushed and saw everything and more than I set out to see.
On board, the food was great and plentiful. It was varied and would suit most diets. fresh cold bottled water was always available. The sleeping setup was effectively on deck (under cover) with mosquito net and very comfortable. There was always power available for charging my two cameras and laptop.
Tips for travellers, ensure you have a high quality insect repellant, sunscreen, barefoot is the best on boat it is good to have slip on shoes for the parts of the deck that are not under cover. If you want alcohol you have to bring yourself (I did not bother) but I understand only a little beer is available in Pangkalan bun. Lightweight, quick dry clothing is the best to wear.
Hight recommend this trip - for more info find me on Face book or instagram @ endangered adventures.

My friend Jas and I did a 5 day, 4 night tour with Bain and his crew. Although the klotoks is not as fancy as the others (he said he is making improvements soon) I do think we had the best guide. My friend and I like our comforts and we found the bathroom etc to be ace! He literally loves being out there in the wild and finding things and his passion and life’s work shows. We wanted to trek so he took us on some very long but enjoyable walks looking for and finding orangutans. With Bain if you ask out get. So don’t be shy. He also took us to a conservation site to plant trees and talked us through the devastation of palm oil as I wanted to know more about this. The crew made amazing food - they have a seriously good chef!!! Also Bain is a very good animal photographer and he took professional photos for us rather than using our iPhone photos! So that was great. Night trek isn’t that great, also note Bain has a young daughter and wife he bought on our boat to stay over for a few nights. They didn’t get in the way, but I wasn’t a fan of this, and I would make a note if you wouldn’t want that. Thank you Bain you and the crew were great!

After experiencing two other types of Orangutan tours in East Kalimantan, I must say that the Tanjun Putting National Park / Sekonyer river tour offered by Orangutan Trekking Tours is pretty amazing! We had booked the Photography Tour and were very disappointed since the photographer Arbain had double-booked himself and couldn't be our guide, we got to meet him on day 3 of our tour, which kinda made it even worst, 'cause in the few minutes we had with him we realized even more what we were missing out on :( That said, the company was apologetic about their mistake and refunded us the supplement we had paid for the photography option of the tour. Also, our guide Tina, was lovely and spoke excellent English. Aside from not getting the photography support we had expected, the experience was still amazing! We did not sleep on the klotok, we instead opted for the overnights at Rimba Ecolodge. The lodge wasn't luxurious, but it was lovely, clean and comfortable. We spent a lot of time on the river, traveling from our lodge to the feeding stations, back and forth, the time spent on the river was actually really nice, you get to see lots of Probiscis monkeys, birds, riverside villages and beautiful sunsets! The food on the boat was delicious! As for the orangutan encounters, we visited 3 different stations (more than once) and you are guaranteed to see the orange primates since they are fed on a daily basis. The animals are free to roam anywhere in the jungle, however, they visit these platforms where rangers feed them every day (not convinced that there are still any researchers working at these camps tho) - Don't expect much trekking/hiking, you simply get off the boat and walk down a trail to the feeding platforms. We did a small hike in the jungle with a ranger, but again, it was kind of on a trail and didn't get to see much wildlife. However, as mentioned above, we did another tour in East Kalimantan the following week where we did go trekking in the dense jungle and only found one wild orangutan up high in a tree, and couldn't take any decent pictures of it. So if you want pictures of these beautiful gentle giants the Tanjun Putting National Park tour with Orangutan Trekking Tours is the best way to go! We found it to be an amazing adventure, and would recommend this tour to anyone wanting to see "semi" wild orangutans and be guaranteed great photo ops!

This holiday with Orangutan Trekking Tours was an absolutely incredible adventure. Everything was so well organised. Leading up to the trip, all my emails were replied to promptly and every detail noted so that the trip ran super smoothly.
The flight into Pangkalan Bun airport went without a hitch. Arbain, my guide and amazing photographer, collected me from the airport with his driver and we drove 20 minutes to Kumai where we boarded Arbain’s beautiful and new klotok river boat. On the klotok was Arbain, my photographer and guide, two male assistants, Ikbal and Arief, Ani the cook and the captain, Asra. We spent two hours heading along the Sekonyer River to the Rimba Ecolodge.
I spent the next six days with Arbain photographing magnificent orangutans, energetic proboscis monkeys, playful macaques, sly crocodiles, wild boars, and unique hornbills.
This trip was absolutely everything I had wished for! I had been wanting to visit Borneo for some time to photograph the orangutans and I am so glad I came across Orangutan Trekking Tours.
Aside from the insights of Arbain as an extremely talented photographer, he is such a wealth of knowledge about the local wildlife and is a passionate advocate for the environment. He had previously worked as a researcher at Camp Leakey for seven years tracking orangutans in the wild and recording his observations. This experience has helped Arbain develop his knowledge and thoughts about the environment and the wildlife within it. He is an advocate for preserving the rainforest.
It was incredibly inspiring to travel through Borneo with Arbain and his beautiful crew. They all looked after me exceptionally well, as if I was family. I always felt safe both on the klotok cruising down the Sekonyer River (given there are crocodiles in the water!) and when we were searching for orangutans in the rainforest.
Ikbal, Arief and the captain, Asra were always attentive and helpful with assisting me carefully on and off the klotok with my camera equipment and additional backpack. They delivered all my meals that were kindly prepared by Ani. Every meal had four or five dishes and there was so much food. I had requested vegetarian meals and was pleasantly
delighted by the delicious food. I could only ever eat about a quarter of it as there was so much!
If you are looking at booking a trip to Borneo, I thoroughly and wholeheartedly recommend Arbain and his team at Orangutan Trekking Tours.

For a long time, I have wanted to see the endangered reddish-brown Orangutans. This trip was a dream come true!!
Seven of us travelling together joined the five-day (4 night) tour at about 12 noon on 1st August 2019. Our guide ArBain picked us up from Pangkalan Bun Iskandar Airport and brought us to the jetty in Kumai to board the klotok houseboat Al-Fatah 66. It was an open boat. Folding canvas allowed the sides to be closed if there is rain. Five of us slept on the upper deck on comfortable mattresses enclosed with mosquito netting. The other two in our group were accommodated at Rimba Lodge. There was only one toilet that had to be manually flushed by pouring a bucket of water. The shower and the toilet were together in the same room. The crew included two lady cooks and a male attendant in addition to the Captain.
The meals provided on all four days were similar and basic but tasty.
Our guide explained that Proboscis monkeys are endemic to this South East Asian Island Borneo. During our tour of Tanjung Puting National Park along Sekonyer River, Bain, our guide took us to various places of interest listed below:
* Pondok Tunggui Orangutan feeding centre (twice) at the feeding time 0900 to 1130. Enjoyed them coming in from the canopy of high trees with their typical swaying movement.
* Camp Leakey - feeding time 1400 - 1600. Saw a gibbon and a large troop of Orangutans, feeding and playing.
* While moving on the Sekonyer river, flowing through the rain forested park, we saw many Proboscis monkeys, long tailed macquae, many birds and a few Orangutans feeding on tender reeds by the river.
* Tanjung Harapan Camp - This was another feeding centre for Orangutans where we saw many mums and babies.
There were many house boats on the river. Some looked more modern and comfortable. Though the boat could have been more comfortable, we thoroughly enjoyed the monkeys and birds and above all it was a few days close to nature and a dream come true! Deserves 5 stars – if the boat were more comfortable, have more privacy to change clothes and better toilet facilities!

While the crew did as good of a job they could do with the tools they had available to them, it does not excuse the following:
1. Bain not showing up, since the writing of this TripAdvisor post there has been a really lame attempt to take responsibility. My husband has responded to three emails at least that seem to say that there must have been some sort of miscommunication, but we have emails that do not support this.
2. We were told to bring a small towel of our own for each of us, when in fact this was our bath towel and this was never communicated. Had it been communicated, we would have brought a larger towel.
3. Our bed covers to keep us warm at night were molded and smelled of rotten clothing and we were never able to use it. A simple top sheet would have sufficed to keep us somewhat warm.
4. On other better equipped klotoks, we could see others reading on their iPads and Kindles with light where we sat each night with two small candles that didn’t even light the food that we were eating.
5. We only got to charge our batteries and cell phones one time because the generator seemed to never be available to us.
6. The trekking experiences were really just something to keep us busy to say that we trekked. None of the rangers spoke enough English to explain what the various vegetation was that we were walking through and nor did our guide seem to know. On our night hike, the ranger moved so quickly through the brush that I had to call out several times for him to slow down. My husband actually pointed out things that he did not.
7. This was just a tour. You can book any other tour company, but if you are booking this one thinking that it will be a Photographic Tour, this was not our experience at all. Save the money and book someone else.
8. Often, my husband and I sited animals, but our klotok was going so fast that we often missed viewing the animals more closely.
9. Oh, I know that it is often the case that a company spokesperson will say, “Well, we had no idea this was happening because the guests said nothing to us during their visit.” We HAD NO INTERNET during this klotok tour. So there was no way to alert the company of our concerns. However, my husband did so as soon as we had access and as of my writing of this post. He has gotten nothing but lame excuses.
Of all of our trips and we have taken many, this was the most disappointing and the most egregiously overstated tour company that we have ever dealt with.
The staff: the cook, her grandson, Andy (our guide), Herman (our captain) and Kopi (or all around deck hand) were great. This crew is the only reason that I am scoring this tour above a 1 star. They did an exceptional job with the sparse tools that they had, but this was definitely not the tour that we booked, paid for and read about on the website.
Buyers Beware! We did not get what we paid for and I CANNOT recommend this tour to anyone.

Hi 845sandyk,
The team at OTT are sorry to read your review and hear that you didn’t have the best experience you were hoping for.
We understand how frustrating the situation must have been and we understand with limited internet access in the national park it wasn’t possible for you to pass on your feedback. I will address all your points individually.
1. It was very unfortunate that your allocated guide was not present on the tour. We had some issues on the ground with communication from our lead photography guide - we were unaware of the change of plans and were not able to inform you in time of the issues that he was experiencing. Arbain has been working hard to upskill other local guides in the OTT crew to help our clients and provide the best experience possible.
2. We advise all guests to pack a light towel as carrying a bulky towel can be cumbersome. I can see that a light towel could be interpreted as a towelette, and have updated the information on “what to bring” on our website, as well as our email communication to specify a lightweight towel for showering purposes.
3. We have been looking at ways to guarantee the quality of the Klotok boat, and have nearly finished the construction of our own brand new 20m boat exclusive for use by Orangutan Trekking Tours customers. The new boat is three stories high, equipped with solar panels to power devices and lights, private bathrooms, brand new bedding and a comfy outdoor lounge. Our new boat is equipped with brand new bedding and linen. We have also passed on the feedback about the linen on the boat that was allocated to your tour, directly to the boat operator.
4. Unfortunately, the lighting and electricity on some of the klotoks can be difficult to control, however our new boat has indoor and outdoor lighting that is powered by solar panels. We also have a generator onboard for back-up power when the solar has been completely utilised.
5. We have spoken to the crew to ensure they proactively offer guests use of the generator to charge devices.
6. The ongoing training and education of local guides is a key part of our company mission. I’m sorry to hear that your experience on the treks did not meet or exceed your expectations, and we are working with the local team to further their English training.
7. We pride ourselves on our photography tours, and the unique experiences that we are able to give our clients. It’s really unfortunate that you didn’t experience what our photography tours offer, once again we apologise for the inconvenience caused.
8. We will take this on board for future tours, however, our team are always open to service any request, so if you would like to go slower or faster, we are can certainly accommodate those requests during the tour.
9. Due to the remoteness of the island, internet access is still intermittent in Borneo and non-existent while on the river in the national park. We have reviewed our communication further and have tried our best to resolve the issues and have provided a refund for your husband's ticket.
We aim to provide each and every guest with the best possible tour experience which in turn allows us to meaningfully contribute to the conservation of the forest and endangered animals that depend on this ecosystem. Once again, I’m so sorry that your experience did not meet your expectations and that our team due to unforeseen circumstances was unable to give you the photography experience you were looking for.
Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. On a positive note, our team are pleased to hear that you still had a great time with our crew.
