Chureito Pagoda of Fujiyoshida is one of the go-to places to catch a perfect Mt. Fuji shot. This attraction has a pagoda which is the Arakura Sengen Shrine. This pagoda is located on top of the hill therefore it would be best if you’re wearing flat boots during winter or sneakers during summer so your legs won’t get hurt during a climb on the stairs. A very amazing panoramic view of Mt. Fuji is worth a visit when you reach the top of the attraction. A must-try:
It’s a must-try to ring a bell in Shinto shrines as it is said to believe that it acquires positive power and good luck while repelling bad spirits. I rang the bell three times because I believe that the number 3 is a universal holy number and the number of genesis. Try Omikuji! Omikuji is a Japanese fortune-telling activity which is similar to fortune cookie. There are Omikuji to almost all Shinto shrines in Japan. All you need to do is pay 100 JPY then shake a box full of numbered sticks then pick one. Bring back the number to the shake box and select your Omikuji (fortune paper) from one of the drawers then read it afterward. Some shrines offer English translations and some are not. Depending on your fate, you can keep the Omikuji if it’s a good one but leave it if it’s a bad curse. If it’s a bad curse, you can tie it on a pole or a tree and leave it in the shrine. I got a small blessing Omikuji so I kept it with me to attract good luck!

I visited this Pagoda and Park twice while staying in Fujiyoshida. The first time I was here it was cloudy outside and I couldn't see Mt Fuji. But even when the mountain is not visible the pagoda and scenery is still gorgeous and worth going to. I got lucky the second time around as Fuji was visible so I was lucky enough to get great photos of the pagoda with Fuji in the background. Prepare to get some exercise if visiting the pagoda. You can either take the road up or stairs. The pagoda itself is really beautiful, I loved the colors and architecture. This pagoda and view of Fuji is iconic, you are guaranteed to get a great photo here.

This is one of the most picturesque spots to get a view of Mount Fuji. The mountain tends to be covered by clouds so do some research on the best times to visit.
We were there over winter which has a high chance of a clear view. We made it to the top just before sunrise and had an amazing view! It's quite a climb up the hill or stairs but it is beyond worth it. You can get to the Pagoda easily by train from Kawaguchiko.
Highly recommend sacrificing a night of sleep to get here before sunrise to have the place to yourself and watch the sun come up!

Loved the views from here. After two days of rain and fog I was rewarded with a bright sunny morning just before I had to leave for Tokyo airport. Having handed back my hire car I had to get a taxi to take me from my hotel to the pagoda. The taxi dropped me at the foot of the 400 stairs. I rushed up them and was rewarded by the famous view. At 7am there were just a few people at the viewing spot. I rushed back down the hill again and the driver returned to pick me up. It was an expensive journey (the taxis seemed more expensive than in Kyoto) but it was worth it.

Famous spot to capture the amazing view of Mt. Fuji and the Chureito Pagoda, which is widely seen on magazines. You can get different views on different times of the day, but early morning is preferred. Expect to take about 10 minutes hike up the pagoda to get the most scenic views.

How long does it take a normal person (average fitness/ability) to walk up the steps? Just trying to time our trip with the trains! Thanks

The whole point is to take in the views. Give yourself at least 2 hours here otherwise don’t go.

The most convenient place to stay would be near fujiyoshida bus station for the best choice of air b&b / hotels

I will be going here in mid April and will be renting a car.
1) Does the pagoda close? I want to go very early for sunrise photography (5 am)
2) Is there parking available?
Thanks!

To catch a perfect sunrise of Mt Fuji is spotty due to morning fog and good percent of just overcast. The local saying is that Mt Fuji is a shy mountain ... meaning that its often hiding behind clouds! Luckily we had a clear morning when we visited last year and it was grand and majestic. The lighting will change throughout the day and sometimes even within hours as the cloud moves in and out. I suggest to drive to different positions and elevations to enjoy the landscape. We drove up to 5th station and get a close up view of the mountain and to Shiraito Falls later in the afternoon. Good Luck and have a wonderful time !

Do you know approx. how long of a trip this is from Tokyo - can this be done in one day? I was looking at transportation from Shinjuku and I calculated roughly 3 hours just to get there - not including the hike up to the pagoda.

Yes! It can be done, you can catch a bus really early (around 6:30 am) from Shinjuku. Arrive to kawaguchiko station and then catch a train to Shiniyoshida Station. Then go back to kawaguchiko station and go back to Tokyo. I believe you can grab a train all together, but I didn’t consider that option cuz it was very expensive. I think that, if you can, it is worth staying at least one night by Kawaguchiko Lake. But it can definitely be done in one trip. Also, I believe there are some tours that offer a one day trip from Tokyo. Hope this helps.

My family and I are planning to go here to see a good view of Mt.Fuji on December 29, 2017. Will it be snowing and foggy? or the we will still get a good view of Mt.Fuji? Thank you!

It is pretty much impossible to detemine the fog condition until the day of your visit. From my previous visit in the morning (around 9am) I had to wait around 1 hour up in the mountain for the fog to clear to get a decent view of Mt Fuji. But that was in early April in which the weather was still cold (below 10 degrees celcius), so I can't imagine how cold it would be when you and your family visits in late December. And also I have to mention that you need to climb 400 (plus) steps up the mountain and back.
