‪While sixteenth-century history is my particular passion, the Wars of the Roses is the forerunner to the birth of the Tudor dynasty. So, the site of the Battle of Towton is of great interest to Tudor history lovers like me. Personally, I love walking battlefields. They are atmospheric and poignant places - provided you can take your imagination with you. In this case, this one has a good number of information boards along the route that tells the history of the battle. The trail is easy to follow, well signposted and quite popular with dog walkers.

The trail I did took around took about 1.15 to walk along the undulating and open countryside that make up the terrain of the battlefield. Even my 85-year-old mum was able to tackle the 'worst' of the hills! About 70 - 80 % of it is away from the road so dogs can off the lead for most of the time.

I would point out that the place in which both armies first faced off is across the road from the main trail. You can easily see this part of the battlefield but not walk upon it.

I highly recommend a splendid lunch at the Rockingham Arms. Friendly staff, excellent food and very dog friendly.

Afterwards, we visited Saxton Church, where some of the slain were buried following the battle and a fairly incongruous pyramid-like stone marks the spot where some further human remains, which had been excavated elsewhere in Towton. were re-interred in circa 2005-6. Otherwise, the church is relatively unremarkable.‬

‪We chose to start our walk from the Crooked Billet, Saxton, which is actually not in Saxton village but just outside. This walk covers the Yorkist positions at the beginning of the battle. If you want the battleground and Lancastrian positions then there is a separate walk from Towton. Both walks are about 3 miles long over well walked paths through & around field edges. Our walk, Saturday 16th Sept, was a lovely afternoon ending in a brilliant early evening meal at the Crooked Billet, where you are allowed to park whilst doing the walk. A leaflet, £3, can be purchased from the pub with details & information of both walks‬

‪Our guide Chris, brought the battle to life, giving very interesting background on many of the historic figures with 'Yorkshire' humour thrown in for free. Excellent morning, followed by a quick pint at The Rockingham Arms.
Thank you.‬

‪What an excellent excursion!
Six gathered individually and as small groups to walk the Battlefield Trail at Towton. Met, guided and comprehensively informed by Penny from the Towton Battlefield Society, whose knowledge seemed encyclopaedic and whose briefings at each stage progressively developed a picture of this bloodiest of battles as we walked the trail.
Questions and Penny's answers along the route extended the walk and enhanced interest and enjoyment.
Sunshine, breeze and dry footing helped, so different from the 'howling wind, driving sleet and snow' of Palm Sunday in 1461.
Well worth the drive from Lincolnshire and thoroughly recommended.‬

‪An easy, relaxing walk with informative boards dotted around to give you a real sense of the battle. Beautiful vale of hills unique to the area which is quite flat and gives miles of views to North and West Yorkshire. Topped off with an excellent meal at the Rockingham Arms. Lovely afternoon out!‬

‪We did a tour of the Towton battlefield with Penny a volunteer from the Towton Battlefield Society. It was excellent - great explanation of the context of the Wars of the Roses, and really brought to life the battle itself, and what the experience must have been like for those involved. Penny was very knowledgeable and responsive to questions from the group ( about 15 of us). It was completely free, although donations of £5 per person were suggested, which we gladly gave. Afterwards, we then visited the Crooked Billet, who keep the key for a small museum that the Society have set up in the pub’s beer garden. Altogether, a great morning. Our only criticism / warning is that traffic noise in some parts of the route can make the guide’s narration difficult to hear.‬

‪I may already be an enthusiast for this period of history, but I believe anyone with an enquiring mind would find this guided walk wonderful.
Chris was a very informative, perceptive, resourceful and especially, entertaining guide.
The health benefits of a long walk -with stops for the information sharing- were a bonus. Would gladly do it again, given a chance.
It's a great shame that the historical significance of this battle - costing more lives than any other single day's fighting on British soil (~28,000), is so little known‬
