I visited as part of a group of 12 on a guided tour. The guide was extremely knowledgeable and his obvious love of the facility shone through.
Truly an amazing place and well worth a visit.
I will definitely be returning, hopefully on a Steam day.

Rather a wet day for our visit but engines are all under cover so this was not a problem to us. Car parking is good. Volunteers all helpful and friendly. Guided tour of the reservoir was well worth doing. Good cafe with good selection of food and cakes - lovely bacon baps.

This was a great opportunity to see behind the scenes and to operate the engines.
The Steam Experience day started with an excellent tour and the story behind the history of the Pumping Station. We were then shown how to stoke the boilers, start, run and stop the steam engines and drive the colliery winding engine. We were shown how to make an item in the blacksmiths workshop and went on a tour of the amazing underground reservoir.
Plenty of refreshments and a buffet lunch were provided and at the end we received a certificate and a years membership of the Association, giving free entry for twelve months. The grounds and lake are very attractive and worth exploring.
A really enjoyable day, with the chance to learn new skills and do something different.

Arrived at around 10:30 am already large numbers in the car park, nice greeting and well organised from the off. Live in Nottingham and ashamed to say our first visit ever, but we will return - what a result both pumps going in the engine room, winding house excellent, even had a ride on the small steam train always a love for trains no matter the size. There was a craft fair on too along with a band. All staff were really friendly and knowledgeable great first visit. I will be returning ….

Visited for a cyber punk weekend a while back. Annual tickets to get in which is great meaning 1 purchase sees you good for the year. Lovely volunteers at the station, well organised for the time of post lockdown with distancing between sellers or shows and lovely grounds well kept.

Well worth coming to visit on one of the steaming days. As well as the huge pumping beam engines there is also a colliery winding engine and other working steam exhibits. Nice cafe and staff very helpful. There was also a tour of the underground reservoir too on the day I visited, although I only noticed this by chance and by that time it was too late for me. It could perhaps have done with a programme of what was on being available.

Great day out and a lovely bit of history. The underground Pumpherston and its hidden structure is amazing to see. Its huge underground and really worth the visit which is £3 per person and separate from your entrance fee. The "pond" the size of a small lake has carp in that swarm like perhanna when fed. Feed can be bought for £1. The main building and huge pump is great to see. The volunteers are friendly and really work hard to keep this lovely part of history alive and deserve our support. Lovely cafe onsite with good prices.

I'm a mile or so from this and I have never visited, I am shamefully ashamed of this! Its brilliant for a picnic, morning walk or just generally a look around.
The mini ride on railway was my boys favourite - a season ticket or something needs to be organised for this, feeding the fish was a highlight too - Carp feeding from your hands, its extraordinary!
The visit to the under ground reservoir is some way beautiful. Found the staff knowledgeable and friendly, but does need some fresh blood / ideas.
The cafe was great and did dairy free items - this I find great (being lactose intolerant, but when I asked for soya milk coffee, the chap advised we only do black, white or Cappuccino - his mistake was quickly rectified by another)
We did the vintage motorbike weekend, there wasn't many bikes there and I wouldn't call an 09 plate vintage. But they're was some golden oldies.
The steam engines were good and the iron munger was fabulous- I got a heart from a horse shoe!
Maybe a vintage / retro cafe? Get the WI involved or even a vintage fair?? But for £10 entry fee and free for the year - well worth a trip!

Hi Gemma
Thank you for your honest review. We do what we can to make each event different for our visitors and the Classic Motorcycles weekend is still a work in progress but each year the number of exhibiting bikes is increasing as word spreads.
Thank you once again.

The main pumping house and boilers etc are well worth a visit. The staff are not very nice, rude and curt best describes them. The day I visited, a volunteer right in front of me was resigning because of the way he was being treated. This guy was not the only volunteer to leave. A friend of mine as recently left because he was made to feel unwanted and not needed. He was never asked to help out , and made to feel he was intruding if he showed any interest. It appears that the staff here have got themselves into a nice rutt, and resent anyone who might upset it. This place like a lot of heritage sites are full of this type of volunteer who push away all younger volunteers who are the future. If this attitude continues, then these sites have no future and will all close as the existing older staff die off.

Thank you for leaving a review, sorry you had an unfortunate experience when you visited but I cannot allow you to portray all of our volunteers as being 'not very nice' as this simply isn't true as many other reviews on this page confirm. The volunteer team that we have at Papplewick is one of the best; they are very welcoming and encouraging to new people joining the museum.

An incredible and beautiful building, a marvellous bit of Victorian engineering, other bits and pieces to look at and an enthusiastic tour from Pete! who was lovely, knowledgeable and welcoming. Certainly a highlight of our week in Nottingham.

When we got married I'm sure they said dogs were allowed on the grounds on leads but not inside the attractions, but to be sure contact Ashley there he is in charge and very accommodating.

Is the attraction open every day/week/or just special days and times?

I think its open all the time but its only running on special steaming days and its not nearly as impressive when its not running.

Would a 4 1/2 year old boy find this interesting and how noisy is it please? Thanks for your time

Dear Jmac90, our beam engines are very quiet, you can have a conversation quite easily whilst they are running. On steam days we also have the miniature railway and tours of the underground reservoir. This weekend, Oct 10th & 11th, we also have a 1940s event on site featuring many re-enactors in period costume, vintage vehicles, displays etc. All steam events run from 11am-5pm (last admission 4pm). A standard adult ticket is £8 and under 5yr olds are free.
