We spent a day on this wonderful island. The crossing was an event in itself - sitting near the back of the boat avoided the worst of the spray! The island itself was full of breeding birds. We saw common and arctic skuas, snipe, grouse, guillemots, razorbill, fulmars, kittiwakes and puffin to name but a few. The staff were friendly and helpful and we would love to return one day.

Beautiful ^ dramatic scenery, wildlife in natural settings hence to see the wildlife you need binoculars. Wildlife photography very limited as birds are not near or clearly visible on the cliffs due to distance.
Great for walkers & hill trekkers but if you have any physical limitations the round island walk will not be of you.

Fantastic views, bird and sea life in totally unspoilt environment. Well guided in hands off way by rangers. Views all round are stunning.

The ferry does not run 10am until 2pm as stated on website/social media, it runs only until the Ticket Seller can be bothered. We arrived at 1.15pm and were told the ferry would not be taking any more passengers out to Handa due to "fuel costs". My young children and I then proceeded to watch the EMPTY ferry go out to the island.
It wouldn't have taken a lot to put a sign out at the beginning of the three-mile single-track road to say there were no more ferries that day (it was Jubilee weekend and beautiful weather so loads of tourists about).
The 5-minute ferry journey is £20 - the same price as a return ferry ticket from Ullapool to Stornoway (2.5 hours).
It's worth noting that the ferry is separate to the Scottish Wildlife Trust that runs Handa Island - they do a lot of wonderful work. They should really consider hiring someone with more than two brain cells to run their ferry.

Given the perfect weather we were fortunate enough to have the Handa Island walk and wildlife experience were first rate. Around a 6 km circular walk with stops to. Look at puffins and cliffs with many kinds of seabirds nesting , views of the islands and put to the Hebrides , a good introductions from the staff . The ferry from Tarbert worked well and we did not have a long wait at either end
The restaurant near the Tarbet ferry were full and couldn’t accept us even for a coffee.
Highly recommended.

It took getting up early to secure a place on a small boat out to the Island.
We’ve wanted to go for years, but not being able to book online and it being a bumper year for tourists we knew if we didn’t get there early in might be sold out.
Going in early August meant we saw a few Artic gull chicks on the cliffs, we had binoculars, which were helpful as they were along way away. The stacks were magnificent and the turquoise waters as you dock at the Island. We hoped we would see puffins but they were long gone.
We saw Artic skews but all in all, there were very few birds.
The island tour guide gives good and helpful advice and lots of info before you head off around the island at your own speed and we thought that was all managed very well. Unlucky for us it was a day for midges. It takes about an hour walking at a reasonable pace to go around the whole island. It is stunning but if you are not into nature it may not be the trip for you.
There is no staying on the island and no toilet, no amenities at all, so one should use the toilet at the dock before you go. The boat operators were very good, we definitely enjoyed it and were glad to have experienced it.

We were lucky to spend a few years here, boat trip was fab, calm seas, rangers on the island were very informative and we loved the 6K walk around the island, although too late in the year to see puffins.

Visited in July, were really lucky with the weather and had a lovely walk around the island. Unfortunately due to covid the only toilet on the island was closed, which meant trip had to be cut a bit shorter than we’d of liked. Took us around 2 hours. The car park gets very busy. We were almost blocked in by cars parking along the side of the road opposite the car parking spots. There is a toilet in the car park. Boat to island was £20 each. Really helpful guides on the island.
Rookie mistake, make sure you take binoculars.

We drove 3 hours to take the ferry over, we’re met by the conservation team on a pristine beach with turquoise water and a short walk over dunes later we were given an excellent briefing and let loose to walk the circular 2-3 hour walk around the island. It was beautiful, full of Skuas, Razorbills, Guillemots and other birds. The cliffs around the island are utterly spectacular rising 100m from the beautiful coastline. We spotted lots of lizards and the Puffins were amazing - a rare and unique sight and some of them only 20 metres away. Regular ferry collected us and took us back to the mainland and was smooth and safe with life jackets. £20 per adult is extremely good value for the experience, take a long lens for your camera!

Great quiet place, beautiful setting and wide array of birds. Due to covid toilet facilities closed but this is advised when booking tickets.

How long does the trip takes please? and can I use the drone in Handa? or maybe need to make some special permit? Also as I don't have much time, how frequent are the boat trips to the island and back?

Definitely no drones . See my review from July 30 .Last boat is 2 o’clock, first come first served. It is advised to allow3 hours to do a circuit of the island.Last boat back was 4.45. The frequency of boats depends on demand and weather.
Hello,
is the walk on the island child friendly (age 6 and 7)? Thank you!
HandaRanger
Handa!
Hi Emilia
It depends on the child! It's approximately 6km and takes roughly 3 hours, although a shorter walk up to the Great Stack and back is less than 2 hours. It's a good path and well maintained boardwalk, with a gradual incline (with a couple of slightly steeper sections) up to just over 100m from sea level.
Handa is a great place for children to visit, particularly when the seabirds are present during the months of May, June and July. It's worth noting that in August many of the seabirds will have left the colony for the season. There is, however, always the chance to see all sorts of other wildlife including marine mammals, otters, insects and song birds.
It can be wild when the weather is poor, so it's wise to be prepared with waterproofs, sun lotion and midge repellent.

Hi, will the ferry still be running in September (around 14th)?

Handa!
Hello, the last day of the season for 2018 is Saturday 8th September, so apologies the ferry won't be running after then. Kind regards, Handa Ranger

Are dogs allowed on the island
HandaRanger
Handa!
Hello,
Thank you for your message. For passenger safety and comfort, dogs are not allowed on the ferry which is the only access to the island.
