Interesting place! I did not know anything about making shots, so was interesting to see. I enjoyed the walk up and the views, but possibly not for those who don’t like heights or rickety stairs!

What a hidden little treasure. Historical, picturesque location, beautiful tea room and very friendly welcoming operators. The Devonshire Tea was delicious and served so beautifully on English china. Well worth a visit. Lovely gardens and surrounds too.

The View was stunning, and history and the truthfulness of the $15 book about the Tower. The stairs up, over 200, seem a little on the creaky side and the changes in light on the way - Up and down, can be a little off putting but the view - from the small windows on the way up and the balcony once at the top, are stunning. My Father-in-law at 75 walked the Tower and my son at 15, and daughter at 11, so it's manageable.

Interesting history about the Tower. Also very interesting to learn about how shots are made. The beautiful view at the top was a bonus. The tearoom is beautiful - go and take a look.

Stopped in with my husband on our way beach hopping down the coast from Hobart. It is only a short distance from Hobart and is an obvious landmark, and as it turns out, one you shouldn't miss. $10 per person will get you into the tower - small but interesting museum and an endless spiral staircase up the inside of the tower - amazing views from the top. The platform seems sturdy enough even in the high winds on our visit. Most people will learn something new about lead shot during the visit and there is a souven7ir shop at the bottom if you are interested.

Great but if Australian history. Called in for morning was great but on the high cost side but scones were great.

Completed in 1870, the heritage listed historical site of The Shot Tower was an interesting visit. For $10 I got to enter into the small museum which had information about this cylindrical sandstone tower, its original owner and its function, before heading up the spiral staircase to the top of the tower with views over the surrounding region. There are roughly 258 steps from the museum floor up, and another 60 steps down to the bottom of the tower (or 318 steps in total).

Difficult to miss the Shot Tower if passing through Taroona, its a 58.7m tall landmark. It was the first built in Australia, dating to 1870, and is now the only circular shot tower remaining in the world. Built by Joseph Moir, and two stonemasons, the stats are mind boggling particularly in view of his claim that it was constructed in eight months. Over 4,000 curved sandstone blocks, 10m in diameter at the base and tapering to 3.9m diameter at the top, 58.7m above. The walls are one meter thickness at the base and taper to half-meter thickness at the top. He had also built a powder magazine, furnace and three storey factory. It is generally held that the complex took eight years to complete. I wondered what safety conditions existed when mixing hot lead with arsenic and antimony to make the Leadshot. We didn’t brave the 300 step climb to the top.

The Shot Tower is just past Sandy Bay, a short drive from Hobart CBD. A very interesting site, and if you're fit, it's worth the stair climb up to the tower top.
There's of parking, and a nice little souvenir shop inside the tower base.

We drove 20mins south of Hobart CBD to Taroona and climbed the 300 steps to the top of the 6om Tower. Built in 1870 to mould lead shot, it provides fantastic views of the Derwent estuary and surrounding countryside. The creaking of the wooden staircase was a little disconcerting especially as you climbed higher and the tower became narrower. An amazing piece of Australian ingenuity and history.
