‪It’s ok, but where’s the sign to the darn entrance?‬

‪We found a local to give us a tour for 2 K including 2 guides and carried our water.

I'm 220 pounds 5 11 found this hike was intermediate level. We left around 7:30 am but it's better if you can leave 5am. it took about 6 hours total. I was at the top by 10 30. We had a lunch up there.

Coming down was much tougher for me than I expected. I had on tennis shoes and was slipping and sliding a lot. It's kind of like rock scrambling hike in a way but it's down hill rock sliding.

My GF and the guides made this hike look super easy. They are wearing sandals and had no problem but they are advanced hikers.

I agree it was hard to find the trail / entrance in some ways.

I felt like this hike wasn't too tough on the way up I was like, this hike is only intermediate. On the way down it was already hotter and it felt like a longer trip down than up for me. View was cool. I had fun until it got hot towards the end of the hike.

Expect that you might fall down and test your knees and ankles quite a bit with the downhill rock scrambling / loose rocks and loose dirt. I'm not an avanced hiker by any means I have only done some inermediate so if you can do those hikes.‬

‪First off, the entrance to the trail off of Mabintagen was not clear to me. I could not locate the Mt Darala white sign mentioned in another review. Shortly after passing the blue water works sign, I turned right onto a makeshift trail that is marked with shiny red ribbons. This seems to the be entrance from what I can tell as it appears to be well maintained and leads all the way up to the top.

This hike is not for the faint of heart. The trail becomes steep at certain parts, and very steep climbing up to the first tower station and down to the second. Make sure you wear shoes with good traction, e.g. hiking shoes. I was wearing running shoes and had problems with footing due to the fine pebbles strewn along the trail.

At the first tower, there was actually a worker inside the station who gave me a "hello sir" and didn't seem really surprised I was there considering I did not see anyone the entire trek. Impressive if he has to do the trek everyday up and down the mountain!

Anyways the views were great, but I've already seen some similar views from atop in the Phillipines so I wasn't awe-inspired. If you want a change of pace from the excursions and a really good sweat, it might be worth it. Make sure you bring a lot of water. I sweat a ton, so 3L was just right for me.

By the way, I left my trusty bamboo walking stick (named her Bambi) I used for the entire trail at the entrance. Hopefully someone reading this review will put her to good use if still there :)‬

‪I’m not a very experienced hiker but pretty sportiv. This hike was super tough because many parts are very steep and we hiked in the heat of noon which took a lot of energy too. Especially the last 10minutes are very steep and intense. The hike is so beautiful and on top of the mountain you will meet King Vincent. A guy who has to stay for 10 days on top of the mountain taking care that we have internet on the island. I shared my pistachio brownie with him and he told me stories about the island / his kingdom. Please bring him a small gift when you walk up there and you will see the king smiling ! Enjoy this very beautiful hike!‬

‪As has been stated in the below reviews, Mount 'Darala' (Tundalara) is NOT Mt Tapyas. Basically when you stand in coron town, you will see a small mountain with a cross at the top - this is Mt Tapyas. Behind it you will see a tall mountain with 2 cell towers on top (one of which is the actual end point of the hike) - this is Mt Tundalara. The 'trail' here is actually not a hiking trail for tourists, but a service trail for bringing up materials needed to maintain the SMART cell tower at the top. You will note materials scattered along the trail, as well as a few brave individuals carrying things to the top of the trail. My wife and I recently tackled this strenuous hike on a trip to coron, with aspirations of neutralising calorie rich drinking for our upcoming beach bumming.

Here are a few of my tips.

COST
* Doesn't cost anything to actually do the hike.
* Cost is all transportation which is 200PP from town one way (So 400PP total) on a cyclo. I believe you can 'technically' walk from town but the trail entrance is very hard to find and the walk isn't particularly scenic so I would advice against this. Our cyclo driver sought directions from the villages to find the entrance. I would also strongly encourage you to organise with your cyclo to pick you up approximately 3 hours after dropping you off at the same place they dropped you off as you won't find any cyclo's hanging around the base of the entrance to take you back.

TIME
* Took us 1 hour and 50 minutes up and 1 hour 20 minutes down (3 hours, 10 minutes total)
* I think it was about 30 minutes each way on the transport.
* Overall its a half a day activity. I would suggest starting early in the day to avoid the midday heat (see tips below)

THE HIKE
* Get a cyclo from town to Mabingtungan. The cyclo may not know where the trail start is but they should be able to get directions from locals. They will drop you off on a gravel road and you will have a 5-10 minute walk up a narrow dirt road to a large white sign which will say 'Mount Dalara' (a picture should be attached to this review displaying this). A few hundred metres up the road there is a blue sign but don't try to enter in here.
* The first section goes through rainforest for about an hour, during which time you will be swarmed by mosquitos.
* The next 50 minutes was along fairly exposed mountainside, eventually culminating in the SMART radiotower. Here you will be swarmed by heat and wind.
* The view 'aka the reward' from the top is well worth it.

TIPS
* Bring
- Hiking shoes - There are some sections where it is just loose gravel with very limited grip, so you would benefit from wearing shoes with decent grip.
- Mosquito repellent - I can't emphasise how important it is as they are everywhere at the base of the trail before you get into the open air
- At LEAST 2L of water per person. I can't remember ever sweating as much as what I did on this trail
- Sunscreen
- Money (For cyclo and any water)
* There isn't any stalls (i.e. for food or water) or cyclos waiting at the bottom of the trail so I would encourage you to make sure you have enough water and food before you leave town and organise to have your cyclo driver at the base of the hike to pick you up (I would suggest organising a time 3 hours after starting). We did not organise for this and found ourselves walking for 30 minutes back towards town along a dirt road before being able to hitch a ride with a local as we couldn't find a cyclo.
* Due to the heat I would suggest starting early. We started HIKING at 0700 in the morning and I even felt this was half an hour too late, so I would encourage you to get up at 530-600 and head out of town at that time.
* You need to have (at least) some degree of fitness to do this hike.

Overall this was a great hike and I would recommend it to others.

‪Loved loved LOVED this hike! The first hour or so is through jungle/bamboo forest. The last open part up to to the top is another hour. When you come to the tree where the road splits left and right, take the RIGHT! The left road gets super steep at the top. I had to go back just before the top because I was scared of falling. Where hiking boots because the road is full of loose stones, gravel and sand/dust. When you take the right road (that goes a bit down first and up later) also walk along the cliffs. Amazing views there too!‬

‪A must thing to do in Coron if u have a 1/2 day available. It took me 1:15 hr up and 1:00 hr down. I did not do much stops but at some parts the trek is really steep with loose rocks. ‬

‪Amazing mountain to visit for a full day tour, and start at Mabintangen and you can do the tour in 2-3 hours, must have good footingshoes and must like footing tours on a mountain.‬

‪This was one of our highlights during our time in Coron. Firstly I should reiterate, as the good man below has said, this is NOT the 20 minute stair climb to the cross/Coron sign everyone goes to for sunset. Some people below have wrongly said it was and they’re way off. This hike is about a 15 minute drive from Coron Town (also easily walkable in about 50 minutes if you’re up for it). Once you get to the beginning of the path (Mabentangen Trail), a woman will sign you in, just so they know you’re out there I reckon. Then you start your journey. After about 10-15 minutes you’ll see a sign to the right telling you to break off to the right to start the ascent. It’s pretty straight forward throughout although some parts quite steep and kinda hard. Especially since after about an hour, the shade from the trees are gone and it’s just you and the sun. I’m afraid of heights and this hike didn’t scare me at all. It was one of the nicest hikes I’ve ever been on actually and the views from the top will blow your head right off your shoulders. Bring loads of water (at least 2 litres) and be ready to sweat. It took us an hour and a half up and an hour and 40 minutes down. But we didn’t take many breaks. Maybe 3-4 30 second breaks. So if you think you’ll break more, expect it to take closer to 2 hours each way. And take your time. Some parts are steep and a bit slippery. Not to the point of dangerous but you definitely want to take your time. Not only for safety but also to take in all its beauty. ‬
