The review is about a visit to the Nonthaburi market, reached by public boat from Central Pier at Sathorn Thaksin. The cost of the ride is 30 baht each, which takes around 50 minutes. The market is said to be truly local with few foreigners making it out that far, and covers a large area. Visitors are warned that it might be difficult to find clothes that fit unless you are very skinny. A large part of the market is dedicated to food, some of which is still alive, which might not be suitable for those who are squeamish. If you want to see and walk a genuine Thai market with minimal tourist coverage - try this one. The market is not touristic and easily accessible by simply taking the orange line express boat until terminal station.

This was a great market to visit since it was full of local colour and had many interesting goods to purchase at reasonable prices. The food stalls and fruit stands were particularly good!

Als je uit de boot stapt , loop je de hoofdstraat in en al snel aan de rechterkant is een hele grote markt. Van alles wat maar er is ook een groot stuk voedselmarkt. Je weet vaak niet wat je ziet maar het is schitterend. Kleurrijk en vaak heerlijk ruikend.
Een aanrader en ook de bootreis met de oranje flagboat er naar toe is heerlijk. En je bent zowat de enige buitenlander en ziet dus het echte Thailand.

Endstation mit dem einheimischen Boot. Es ist ein kurioses Städtchen lang gezogen und mit Gassen von einheimischen. Der Markt bittet alles was man braucht.

A fellow traveller recommended us to take the public orange boat up the river to enjoy seeing the sights of Bangkok from a different perspective. It costs 15 baht each. The journey took just under an hour to get to the last stop which is Pier 30 . Another fellow tourist advised us to go check out this market that lined the street from the pier. There are numerous clothing and souvenir stalls. It is not as touristy and where the locals go. We enjoyed a delicious arrangement of authentic thai street cuisine. We tried pork balls , satay sticks, chicken drumsticks, sweet balls, egg dumplings, crunchy thai sweets and mango. We also tried a fantastic noodle soup in one of the side street open restaurants.

ส่วนใหญ่จะมาซื้อของในวันหยุดช่วงเช้ามากมีของพวกผักผลไม้สดๆเยอะมากมีของกินอร่อยๆเยอะราคาไม่แพงเดินทางสะดวก

Do people slaughter animals at the market, or is everything already butchered and just sliced into different cuts at the market?

As far as I can remember all the animals were already dead. However the fish were alive and when you chose a fish they killed it for you.

when does the market close? lonely planet says that it is open only between 5-9 am

It is still open after dark. Business does not stop anywhere in Thailand at 9 am.

Not really. Most of it is Food and spices but You can find here and there few little shops/ vendors who sell mostly cheap clothes (quality and price) and things like flip-flop shoes etc.. They have also some tote bags with fake brands like 'Harrods' LOL and some accessories/ cosmetic little Shops. Nothing too 'exciting' in the fashion field but more suitable for People who look for fresh/ cheap/ exotic food/ spices :)
p.s. I know my answer is late but it may help other Visitors.
