The Tagore house has been thoroughly renovated particularly the ground floor. The last time I was here the renovation work had just started. It has been a museum housing the various household items used by Rabindranath and the Tagore family. The first floor still has the bed of the noble laureate with the airy rooms. There are pictures of rabindranath everywhere. The building on the opposite was closed, with a guard sitting outside. One could take a peek inside to the statue of Rabindranath. His car is on display on the right side of this building. You will love all of it.

Tagore's vision of perfect harmony between man and nature can be seen here. I suggest you include a leisurely half-day in your itinerary; to take in what the Uttarayan Complex has to offer. Then come back for more.

12 members of our family wanted to spend the weekend together and we Santiniketan,Rabindranath Tagore's work place. Two hour ride by train from Howrah station was comfortable. We booked 4 rooms at a home stay, which served fresh home made meals. We spent our time mostly gossiping togather. Toto ride through Santiniketan was also enjoyable since the the place reminds us our own poet and one of the greatest poet lived on earth, Rabindranath Tagore.

There is a cluster of five houses where Gurudev spent his time from 1919 to 1941. Each of the buildings is well kept and its furnishings and furniture preserved in pristine condition. There are photographs on all the walls which are well labelled and self explanatory. It gives you a feel of the times that have gone by and how this beautiful place grew to its present status.

Although I had a guide I am not sure what there was to see here... we wandered in and out of some buildings and a gallery but nothing of great interest. Maybe it is just the place itself that is the point? Drove past some interesting newish university buildings that were good. If there is a centre I missed it!

Initially built to be a guesthouse by the Noble laureate's father Maharshi Devendranath Tagore , when the Brahma Samaj movement started . later on it was here that the poet had composed many songs and verses. The ashram remains closed on Wednesdays.

Behind the Main Museum Palace , there are 6 modest buildings where Rabindranath used to live time to time . The last one is double storied . Visitors are allowed to go inside and to view personal belongings . There are certainly interesting to Rabindra Bhaktas,There is the old car in a special garage for viewing. There are few sculptures as well as flower beds . The whole area is well maintained .People can visit the place without going inside the main Museum at a cost of Rs.50/- .There are resting place for tired visitors.

The most serene place in Santiniketan - and possibly in the world - if you are not caught on a day that there are a few busloads of tourists from Calcutta or Durgapur...
Try to focus not just on the exhibition of Tagore Memorabilia in the Bichitra Hall, but stroll around and soak in the ambience; enjoy visiting the many houses of Tagore, and if you can convince the curator, try to see the amazingly beautiful Japanese garden behind Kornark house...

Have been blessed to travel the length and breadth of the planet.Have seen a more visually scenic and picturesque place but never felt the energy of extreme bliss and happiness anywhere else to this magnitude on this planet. The entire ashram comprising the home, museum and all else was visually captivating too nonetheless but the aura and energy of the place was so profoundly blissful that with folded hands I let out a prayer of gratitude to Shri Rabindranathji and exclaimed this ShantiNiketan be known and decorated as “Prashanti Niketan”- “the abode of supreme peace”.since the place has left the deepest impression on my soul and also a friend who came along, am sure it was not a coincidence.hence would recommend every Indian to atleast visit this sacred place atleast once.🙏🏻

I don't think direct bus is available from kolkata.usually people go via train. That is the best option or by car.But you can try a break route i.e kolkata to durgapur (varieties of bus services available in this route from volvo to regular buses). From Durgapur city center you would get a lot of buses for Bolpur.Infact you can get down at Panagarh (stoppage before durgapur)rather going to durgapur and wait for the Durgapur -Bolpur buses.but to get better seat suggestion is to go till Durgapur. From Bolpur, private vehicle or buses should be available for shantiniketan. In this route you can also get down at illambaza and from there also bus or private vehicle should be available for Shantiniketan., but my suggestion if not going there by car try train.
