On the site of Pitsunda 2000 years ago stood the Greek city of Great Pitiunt ("pitius" in Greek means "pine"). Therefore, Pitiunt is a real open-air museum, collecting the heritage of different eras. It consists of two parts.
The main part of the reserve. (Pitsunda Cathedral - Temple of St. Andrew the First-Called, monastery complex: in one of its premises there is a small historical and archaeological museum with an exhibition of antiquities, and in the open air there are fortress walls, the remains of ancient structures: an aqueduct from the period of the Georgian kingdom, religious dolmens, ruins of Roman baths and basilica VI century, and also a good souvenir shop), is located in the very center of Pitsunda within walking distance from different points of Pitsunda. If you travel from Gagra or another city by bus, then the bus station is nearby. We lived in the suburb of Pitsunda Ldzaa, and either walk 5 km or take a minibus, it stops almost at the entrance. Opening hours: 9am to 6pm every day. The entrance ticket in the summer of 2023 cost 300 rubles for adults and 150 for children from 7 to 11 years old. When we were in the fall of 2022, prices were much lower. At 10.15 and then several times a day a free excursion is organized.
The second part, the so-called Settlement, is the remains of the ruins of an ancient city. By the way, this is exactly what the bus stop “Ruins” is called. You can also walk towards the exit from Pitsunda in the direction of Gagra, it’s very close. Entrance is free, but there is nothing to see in general - just clearings and the remains of fortress walls. We passed them many times, heading to Gagry, New Athos or Lake Ritsa, everything is clearly visible from the car window.
But we were in the main part three times. Twice in the fall of 2022, and the last time. in June 2023, already with grandchildren.
Territory.
What can you see in the open air? The main part of the reserve is surrounded along the perimeter by a 10th-century stone fortress wall 550 m long, the height in some places reaches 9 meters, and the thickness of the walls is 1.5 meters. The wall is made of stones of different sizes, which confirms the legend that the wall was built in one day. True, then it was rebuilt more than once.
After the voluntary annexation of Abkhazia to the Russian Empire in 1810, during the period of Russian-Turkish wars, a Russian garrison was located inside the fortress. In addition to the Cathedral, there is a Historical and Archaeological Museum and a dolmen from the village of Eshery. On the opposite side of the main entrance, behind the wall, are the ruins of a Byzantine basilica from the 7th century. and the Assumption Chapel of the 19th century. There is a souvenir kiosk in the tower of the former aqueduct. Souvenirs are mainly with church symbols. But there are also ordinary ones. A large selection of maps of Abkhazia and city plans of Abkhazia, we bought a lot of necessary maps. The toilet is hidden behind the museum. No signs. Not easy to find. But there are regular toilets, not holes and toilet paper.
You can walk around the area in the open air; it is small and the walk won’t take much time.
Church of St. Andrew the First-Called
This is the main attraction of the historical and architectural complex, the largest early medieval temple in Abkhazia (6-9 centuries). The entire history of Pitsunda is connected with this temple. It used to be the residence of the Katalikos. The temple is one of the main places of pilgrimage in Abkhazia - Christian believers come to see the relics of John Chrysostom. Under the dome you can see a medieval fresco, as well as medallions on the altar, but most of the frescoes on the walls, unfortunately, have not survived, because “to improve acoustics” the walls of the temple were plastered.
The temple is inactive. It has excellent acoustics; voice and music do not require any microphones. Therefore, for 50 years the temple has been used as an organ concert hall with 360 seats. The organ installed in the cathedral was made in Potsdam, Germany, by Alexander Schuke in 1975 and is the second largest in the territory of the former USSR after the Dome Cathedral in Riga. During the tourist season, concerts of opera singers of Abkhazia and Russia, performances of the Abkhazian choir, and organ music concerts are held here: Twice a week - Friday and Sunday. Usually starts at 19.00. Tickets are sold on the day of the concert from 13:00 at one ticket office at the entrance, and at the second they sell entrance tickets. The first time we came from Ldzaa at about 12.00 on Friday and were surprised by the huge queue. We thought it was a line for tickets to the museum, but it turned out that already an hour before the sale of tickets to the concert began, people were lined up wanting to attend it.
The concert hall is open during the day for inspection. The views from the second floor were especially impressive. I was pleased that there were no caretakers or security guards, no one was pulling and you could calmly walk or sit wherever you wanted and as long as you wanted
Organ concerts end not too late by our Moscow standards, but public transport no longer runs after 20.00. If you can't get there on foot, the only option is to take a taxi.
Museum
It's small and not very impressive. Perhaps you need to explore with a guide. The museum contains archaeological finds from different periods: from the Bronze and Stone Ages to the Middle Ages (for example, ancient Greek mosaics of the 2nd-1st centuries BC, Byzantine icons). In general, there is nothing to do here for more than an hour. What impressed me the most was the Temple and the Organ! It’s a complete delight to listen to organ music within the walls of the ancient Temple. And after visiting the complex, you should definitely visit the Abaata cafe (right behind the fortress wall!)

A very interesting historical object. We were there in winter. We toured the museum on our own. We went to the temple. It was also not possible to listen to the organ during the winter period. The area is clean and well-groomed. There are dogs running, but they are harmless. Entrance for adults - 300 rubles, for children - 50 rubles. An hour was enough for us to explore the facility. It would be more interesting with a guide.

Хороший монастырь-органный зал. На территории небольшой музей и церквушка. Попали на экскурсию, интересно рассказали про историю города. На часок можно зайти.

Красивое место. Собор, насчитывающий многовековую историю,величествен и монументален. Считаю данную достопримечательность в Пицунде обязательной для посещения. Если купить билет на органный концерт, за час до него Вам проведут экскурсию по крепости и расскажут историю данного места. Экскурсия краткая лаконичная, но очень познавательная.

Вход на территорию 100 рублей с человека (сентябрь 2020), принимают безнал. В стоимость входит посещение храма и музей раскопок II-IV века. Однозначно это одно из лучших мест в Пицунде, которое стоит посетить. Сейчас в нём органный зал, в 17:00 концерты, но днём играют прекрасную музыку на пианино. Старые камни, потёртые фрески, массивные металлические ворота переносят тебя в то время.

Обязательно надо сходить на территорию Пицундского храма, что бы увидеть своими глазами эту красоту и орган, а если еще получится его услышать -это чудо ))) Советую
