We drove this breathtaking 4x4 route back and forth from Al Hamra (If you follow the Al Hoota Cave signs, you will automatically pass the exit (23.086889,57.318550).
There are NO signs/directions.
There is NOTHING for sale along the way in terms of food, drinks or petrol. So full tank, and food and drinks
The first part to the viewpoint is asphalt.
A little later an incredibly spectacular off-road 4x4 route. Definitely doable with policy.
There is no guardrail and it is quite steep here and there and the abyss is deep. No service whatsoever in terms of food, drinks or petrol along the way.
Special off-road/4x4 knowledge is not really required. Know how to manually shift the automatic transmission to a low gear. Drive calmly and controlled. Look far ahead for oncoming traffic.
The trip over the dirt road, through rivers, riverbeds, along steep precipices and steep narrow descents takes about 1.5 hours without stops.
You will definitely want to enjoy the view a few times along the way.
Along the way you will also come across the football field from the Audi Quarto Challenge 10 commercial.
There are also plenty of places, especially at the end near the river, where you can relax and have a picnic.
We thought it was an incredibly fun tour to ride.
A high 4x4 car is required. You can't cross the rivers with a low car.
We would advise against the tour in bad weather (rain or fog). Then it simply becomes a slide and very dangerous.
There is plenty to do in the snake canyon at the end. Hikes, Canyoning etc.,

Of my 6 years in the UAE, between here and Oman this was the best. Snake Canyon was so much fun and the views are unreal. The drive to it is also amazing. I went with “Zaher Tour Guide Oman” on insta.
Zaher’s brother also has a guesthouse in Bald Sayt.
All the gear is provided. Zaher is very kind and helpful. He is also super fast to respond.

I tried to organize the trip to Oman making this stretch of road that would take me to Misfah as a priority. A 4x4 is mandatory and in some cases it is important to use low gear and engine braking. The road begins from the junction on 13, and is asphalted up to Tikhah, then the dirt road begins which remains as such until Jabal Hatt, then the asphalt begins again
Taking this route from al Awabi to Al Hamra and not vice versa has two advantages. The first is that you go uphill, and therefore the brakes are affected much less by the effort. The second is that you almost always travel in the direction of the mountain side, therefore not on the side exposed towards the void. The negative part is that doing it in the opposite direction downhill offers a more beautiful view. However, it is very fun and also challenging, you have to stay focused on driving and managing the car. It's not as terrible as many say, but it shouldn't be taken lightly. There is the possibility of making a couple of detours, the most sensible is towards the snake canyon if you have time or towards Bilad Sayt, perhaps for a stop with a packed lunch. The village says little, it is an oasis that at a certain point appears in the middle of nowhere. You get there by car, then you take a short walk, the people are authentic, there are many ruined houses and goats wandering around the town. At the end of the dirt road (about 3 hours from Al Awabi) you arrive at Jebel Hatt and there is a beautiful panorama, a large space where many stop to take photos and you feel a nice sense of relaxation. If you want to experience a pinch of adrenaline, you have the car you need and a little attention when driving, you will take with you a great travel memory.

Off road experience Snake Canyon (right and left fork) was a wonderful experience. We drove the route from Jebel Shams. You first go to Bilad Sayd (spend the night before the trip is nice in Al Halmra in an oasis with date palms). Once you arrive in Bilad Sayd, you drive back up to the intersection where you see a sign to Rustaq that leads you to the left (is the right fork of the snake canyon route). We didn't see any signs pointing to Wadi Bani AWF and we really had to look. We did not find the left fork, but it also takes 7 hours and is suitable for abseiling, etc. under supervision. Our route took a total of 4 hours from Al Hamra to Rustaq. You won't find any tanks or restaurants, so take everything with you. A 4 wheel drive is a must, as is an experienced cool-blooded driver. Do not do this in the rain. This route can also be followed via Muscat, then follow the signs to Rustaq and see the sign for Wadi Babi AWF. If you are afraid of heights, this route is not recommended or take an experienced guide with you who also drives

We travelled from Al Hamra to Al Rustaq. I had read lots and was a bit worried about the drive but it was much better than expected. We had an SUV AWD (all wheel drive), Hyundai Tucson. The car was a bit lower than a proper jeep so we had to take it slower but it was definitely manageable. The 20km climb up to the view point at 2000m is all asphalted. This took about 1 hour with photo stops. From here it takes 30-40minutes on gravel road to cover the last 10km to the village of Bilad Sayt. We spent about 45 minutes here wondering around and taking pictures. It is then about another 30-40mins to cover the steep 12km to Little snake canyon. We spent about an hour here. It is a beautiful canyon. From here on the route is basically flat and you are driving in the river bed so the last 16km to the asphalt road are quick and easy, about 25 mins. We had allowed a whole day for the drive but it can be done in half a day. The road has the steepest incline and decline I have experienced anywhere but just go slow and you will be fine. There are lots of passing places and visibility is generally good so there was nowhere where we had to reverse for long sections. I felt safe at all times and the hard bit of the drive is just the two half hour sections so also not such an exhausting drive. The weather was very good when we were there. I would not recommend doing the drive in rain or with low visibility. Have fun.

We traveled Wadi Bani Awf not on foot, but in 4WD (mandatory), having rented it in Muscat, along the dirt road that runs through the gorge. We traveled it as part of a north-south route, from the outskirts of Al Rustak up to Sharfat al Alamayn, the mountain pass where the road is again paved and descends rapidly towards Al Hamra.
The stretch of dirt road, if traveled slowly (as is mandatory) and with a few stops at the most panoramic points, certainly takes 4+ hours, and initially takes place in the valley floor, in a magnificent panorama, between towering limestone pinnacles. Then leaving the bottom of the wadi and climbing progressively along its steep walls, it increasingly takes the form of a "hanging" path, magnificent and frightening. Furthermore, the road is narrow and at the same time features steep slopes; so that not everywhere it is possible for two cars to cross: therefore the utmost attention is required.
The dirt road, after touching the picturesque villages of Bilad Sayt and Hatt, climbs further, up to about 2000 meters of the magnificent viewpoint of Sharfat al Alamayn (where the paved road starts again). From here we descend towards the regions south of the Hajar Mountains.
The route allows hours and hours of breathtaking views, and truly gives the impression of being out of this world. I wonder if the villages along the route will remain so isolated for long, or if in the end even here more performing roads will arrive
Selfishly, I'd be inclined to hope that this doesn't happen, but I feel that I don't have the right to decide the quality of life of a population (however small) that doesn't come here on holiday, but lives all year round.

The 40 km stretch of dicey road at Wadi Bani Awf is not as scary or narrow as I thought it would be. A 4x4 vehicle is needed unless you enjoy playing with fire. I used 4L throughout, and kept it at first or second gear most of the time. It is definitely manageable if you have basic knowledge of 4wd, and take it slow and easy.
The wadi crossing for the most part is the width of 1.5-2 cars. Only once or twice, it is the width of 1 car. And you can see oncoming traffic and therefore one of you can stop at a turnout to allow the other to pass.
I think this wadi crossing may be unnerving for someone who has only driven paved roads all their life, doesnt like heights, or has a passenger who is very nervous especially when driving from South to North (Al Hamra to Al Zamah) direction because the passenger will be closer to the steep dropoff most of the time

Meine Frage:
