Highly recommend this trek! Quiet, natural environment. Well marked trail with some hills, rocks, roots, and fallen trees in places. Rustic bathroom facilities. Bring plenty of water, toilet paper and mosquito repellant.

Nice Saturday ride first on ice to Kelvenne and then on the Kelvenne trail from north to south.This winter was very little snow so it was possible to bike on the trail. Great scenery and sunny weather.

This trail is situated on the island of Kelvenne, Lake Päijänne. The trail starts from Kirkkosalmi (the southernmost point of Kelvenne) and ends in Likolahti (the northernmost point of Kelvenne) and it is marked with blue signs. It is about 8-9 kilometers long and takes 2-3 hours. You can also hike to the other way from Likolahti to Kelvenne.
You see beautiful forests, interesting kettle holes and nice lake views on the trail. However, there are so many trees that in most parts the scenery is covered with trees and you can't see the lake very well. Luckily there are very nice sandy beaches on the route.
There are many campfire sites on the trail (Kirkkosalmi, Hinttolanhiekka, Nimetön, Koukunlahti, Karhunkämmen, Isohieta, Likolahti). However, it is forbidden to use them if the forest fire warning is in effect. Water in the lake is clean and tastes good but it should be boiled. There aren't any cafeterias or other services on the island. Dry toilets are at disposal near campfire sites but you have to have your own toilet papers with you.
This hiking trail isn't too congested. Most people come here with their own boats and they stay on beaches. So you can hike almost alone. However, sometimes there may be many mosquitoes with you. So it is a good idea to have some repellent.
It is easy to get to the island with M/S Elbatar cruises from the harbor of Padasjoki in mid-summer (in July and early August). In winter there are cross-country skiing tracks from the harbor to the island over lake ice.
In 1967 they were going to build a bridge, an airport, a railway station etc. on the island. Luckily they didn't do that. Now the island is a paradise for all nature lovers!

Saarelle pääsee kesäaikaan ainoastaan veneellä. Aikataulusyistä emme voineet käyttää reittilaiva M/S Elbatarta, vaan varasimme venetaksin Lehmonkärjestä saaren eteläpäähän Kirkkosalmeen.
Kelventeellä löytyy useita telttapaikkoja, upeita hiekkarantoja, poikkeuksellisen tunnelmallisia laguuneita ja syviä suppia. Saarelta löytyy myös erikoinen suppalampi, jossa on aikaisemmin ollut puuhun kiinnitetty liaani hurjapäitä varten. Suhteellisen vaativa harjupolku tarjoaa luonnon rauhaa ja upeita maisemia.
Saari on ilmeisen suosittu veneilijöiden keskuudessa ja vaikutti siltä, että moni heistä viihtyy Kelventeellä pidempäänkin. Telttapaikoillakin saattaa olla ruuhkaa varsinkin niinä päivinä kun reittilaiva kulkee saarelle.
Suuren kävijämäärän vuoksi polttopuut olivat vähissä ja kuivakäymälät kaipasivat siistimistä. Tästä huolimatta saaren päästä päähän kävely (n. 18km) antaa mahtavan luontoelämyksen joka kannattaa itse kokea.

Kelvenne is a fantastic island in the lake of Paijanne. The nature was at it's best in spring and we did a lovely walk in the forrest and had a campfire picnic at the beach.
