Got to be seen to be believed. So bad it’s good. Bet Drew Pritchard would buy some paintings!! It’s jus fun and different. Good for a laugh with the odd nice thing.

We were very disappointed to see Highland Arts closed down. We have been coming here since 1966 every time we come to the Oban area. It was always kitch and C John Taylor's paintings decidedly odd, but it was very entertaining and brought people here. What an interesting story there must be behind the whole enterprise, with C John Taylor building up his business here, in Oban and at Luss, getting noticed for his paintings, self advertising as the "famous poet artist C John Taylor". We even bought his record "Islands of Beauty" in the 1970s I think which is actually good, though I'm in to kpop nowadays. Highland Arts would make a great chapter in a book about "Lost" Lorne alongside the railway station and Ganavan Sands. I hope C John's children are well and are doing something as innovative and unusual as their father.

There’s a tradition in my family that every time we visit Oban we must end up in the pit that is Highland Arts. Don’t bother skimming stones along Easdale coastline, instead feast your eyes on 3D dog portraits, shortbread, naff paintings, tea towels and free tablet.
Brilliant.

This barn of a shop has truly awful stock. It’s a throwback to the Scotland I remember in the 1960s and 1970s. I found it embarrassing to be there at the same time as foreign visitors. I don’t know what they must think!

This is one of the most strange places I've ever been! Loads of tat on sale & 'home baked' shortbread. The odd artwork is not for sale & is a bit freaky. A very strange place in the middle of a beautiful island. Go to the pub instead or puffers cafe on easdale. They won't give you nightmares like the artwork does

My husband and I both walked around this 'gallery' open mouthed and speechless! If tat, shortbread and butter bars are your thing then this is the place to go. The walls and rather bizarrely some ceilings are covered in paintings (and I use the term loosely) done by the owners late father, who he is is still rightly proud of. The whole place is a homage to John Taylor, poet and artist and if you want to visit somewhere that you will be talking about for your whole holiday (for all the wrong reasons) then a visit is a must. John Taylor junior reminded us of Mr Benn.........where the shopkeeper would suddenly appear but in this place he was offering warm shortbread (kept under a lamp to try and fool people into thinking it was 'just baked') and pieces of butter bar. All in all a most bizarre place never to be repeated!

Called in briefly after visiting Easdale Island. The owners are really friendly but the shop / gallery is slightly strange, with food mixed in with touristy items for sale on every shelf and every corner and strange original artwork on the walls. Worth a look if you have a spare 10 mins or love tourist tat!

Un endroit qui fait musée et boutique souvenir, toilettes et mini-golf en herbe en face. On trouve de tout !
Et un coup de cœur pour le mini-golf avec les explications du gérant et même un prix pour les meilleures cartes !

I honestly can't find words to describe the bizarreness of this experience. The never-ending gallery is piled high with trinkets and tea-towels. The art is the work of C John Taylor. He has a particular way of drawing the human face which means that all his portraits look the same. There are piles of poetry books — he wrote his first poem when he was sixty, we are told, and went on to write more than a thousand. It is not for me to make a judgement on the quality of the art or the writing, save to say that you will never visit a stranger place. It is a warren of tiny rooms all filled with collectibles relating to Mr Taylor. It is rather like shrine built by the dead man. He was obviously a jolly soul, but had no way of realising his abject lack of artistic talent, and in that tragedy is the appeal of this unique place. Walking through the doors was like scene 2 in a Hitchcock movie when the creepy music starts playing and someone's about to die. If this place was a fairground ride it would be the ghost train. Please don't be put off by anything I have said. If you are anywhere near this place you should visit. Do not miss this experience. Our family talked about it for days afterwards.

Sorry not much to say about this just that we wouldn't bother wasting our time going again, it was like a mausoleum. It was a massive maze of rooms with some very dodgy art work ( hey ho - beauty in the eye of the beholder and all that) but I have to say there was not one thing I would buy there - might be attractive to hordes of catch trippers but definitely not my cup of tea - Sorry !
