‪The first ugly surprise a visitor gets is that the caves are locked. One is greeted by the foul smell of bat urine if one tries to peer through the doors. Cave no. 5 and a few others around it have some good carvings in the open, but strangely, the management forces you to enter near cave 19, which offers nothing much of interest. It beats me why they can't have the entry near cave 5 (Varaha).‬

‪The Udaygiri Caves about 10 kms away from Sanchi are worth visiting once in that region. Definitely they need better care and maintenance. There were hardly any visitors in the afternoon . Saw only two persons manning this 5 th century treasure caves - one guard and the other in the ticket office. These sculptures made during the Gupta period are mostly inside the caves .20 caves .The doors to these caves were mostly locked. So we could peep in through the netted doors. The most beautiful one I liked was a huge Shivaling with a face of Shiva on it. It was the first time I saw such a Shivaling.
Another one which is unique and outside the caves was a huge sculpture of Varaha- a Lord Vishnu avatar who takes the form of boer to save Bhudevi - Mother Earth from demon. It’s a very powerful depiction in stone.
There are no shops around in this sleepy village area. So please carry your water and wear very comfortable shoes as there are hardly any paths to walk on. Visitors find their own path to walk on rocks and stones. We looked for guides but none in and around. So be happy with the information boards. ‬

‪Unbelievably beautiful, a real treasure and definately a must visit site. Its such a pity that so much of our culture and heritage is still under the wraps. When other countries project their ordinary objects and attract tourists, we in India fail miserably. We could become the world's largest tourist destination. ‬

‪Udayagiri caves

Indians RS 25

Foreigners RS 300

However if you pay by card the amount is reduced.

This place is worth visiting only if you are ready to do some climbing (easy). The place has few structures of lord Vishnu and lord linga. It's better to visit when it's not sunny as you may get fried.

‪This place is interesting for any history lover. Old caves with beautiful carvings especially the varaha relief and the sheshayi Vishnu are stunning. Not too many tourists visit. ‬

‪Udayagiri caves had an entry ticket of Rs.40 per person, tickets to be purchased at Cave-1. Majority of the caves are Hindu based and is said to be one of earliest caves in India - carved during Gupta empire. Brahmi and Nagari scripts are predominantly noticeable across the caves. Cave-5 is one of the most significant caves out of the 20 caves in the area. Cave-5 depicts the 3rd avatar of Lord Vishnu - Varaha Avatar through a massive sculpture. The group of sculpture depicting the asuras, devas, the ocean and the Goddess of Earth are absolutely stunning in this cave. One can reach Cave-5 directly by car/road - 200-300m from the ticket counter.‬

‪We went to this awesome place called Udaygiri caves near bhuvaneshwar in orissa. Initially i thought this to be a normal cave but when we went there and the local guide explained us about the place we were awed and amazed by the architecture, the science, the knowledge of our forefathers. We took ola cab from the town to this place. U need a guide to understand the place. They take INR 150 - 200 to show one cave Udaygiri. U need to pay more to see the other cave Khandagiri which is bang opposite. Guide helps u know the minute details which u cannot understand with naked eye. Beautiful place must visit . Highly recommended‬

‪One can combine visit to Sanchi along with visit to Udaygiri as they are on the same route. It is just 40 minutes away from Sanchi. It is advisable to go there by ones own vehicle as there are no public transport available regularly. Also carry your own food and water as there are very few shops in the area selling refreshments. There is no entry fee. There are about 20 caves but the major attraction is cave no. 5. The site is beautifully maintained by ASI. The caves are locked but one can see it from outside and there are signboards nearby which give information about that particular cave. They are situated on a hill and it is amazing that how they have stood the test of time.‬
