The temple was formally a Vishnu/Krishna Temple, dating back some 1500 years. The temple after Amma's Prathishta (giving sacred power to the idol of Annapoorneshwari) was built by Avittam thirunal Raja Raja Varma of Chirakkal Kovilakam. In Hindu mythology, it is said that the goddess arrived from Kashi with two other goddesses or devis ( Kalarivathikal Amma and Madai Kavail Amma) and a boatman in a golden ship, and disembarked at Azhi Theeram which is now known as Aayiram Thengu.
The Punna Prathistha was done in 1994, in the month of Kumbham in the Malayalam calendar, Pooyam Nakshtram, which now is observed as the Prathista Dinam every year.
The main festivities in the Temple start from the Malayalam month of Medam Shankramam (15 April), and is celebrated in the following seven days. The other festivals that are celebrated in the temple are Shiva Rathri, Navami, Ekadashi etc.
The temple is presently under the Malabar Devasom Board, and is maintained by the Temple Committee. A unique characteristic of this temple is that it is built of one single type of rock, and the Sree Kovil of both Annapoorneshwari and Krishnan is of the same size as per Vasthu, signifying that both the goddess and the god are given equal importance. The Entrance of the temple is in front of Krishnan's Sree Kovil, and the reason there isn't a direct entrance to Annapoorneshwari's Sree Kovil is because during the olden days, it was believed that women from Brahmin families aren't supposed to be seen directly (Antharjanam). Hence there is a small window that is right in front of the Sree Kovil so that people can view the idol from outside.
This temple is one among the two Annapoorneshwari temples in Kerala. It was built using polished stones and put together using avil and belam (a mixture of flattened rice and jaggery). Next to the Temple is the Temple pond or the Ambala Kolam, which is approximately 2.5 acres in area. In the centre is the Pole, otherwise known as the stumpa. The four major entrances of the Chera have been built using large layers of rock laid parallel to each other. The Chera also has a Kollapura (used by poojaris for bathing), located to the southwest of the Chera.

Cherukunnu Annapoorneshwari Temple, also known as Cherukunnilamma Kshethra, is one of the rare temples, where the Goddess Durga - Parvathi Devi Mahamaya - is incarnated in the form of ‘Annapoorna Bhavam’ (Mother, who provides food to every needy without restriction of all meals). [In Malayalam, ‘annam’ = food; ‘poornam/purnam’ = full/complete; Bhavam = existing/occurring/appearance]. Therefore, the temple is acclaimed as offering ‘anna-dhanam’ (free food) in abundance to the devotees as lunch and dinner every day, as ‘prasaadam’ and is the principal offering to the Goddess here. The chuttambalam/naalambalam, surrounding the sanctum sanctorum, also serves as the dining area (Outta Pura) to the devotees.
Cherukunnu itself is quite charming in the midst of green hillocks with back waters all around. The place is said to have derived its name from the five hillocks (Cheru = small and kunnu = hill) around this place. There is also a mythological version for the name, according to which, the devotees used to be served with heaps of cooked rice (choru = cooked rice meal and kunnu = heap/hill) as prasaadams (anna-dhanam) and hence used to be addressed as 'Choru-kunnu' that has gradually got transformed colloquially in common usage as 'Cherukunnu' over the years.
It appears that the original temple of the 5th century AD was principally a shrine of the Lord Krishna and certain circumstances have led to the construction of the temple for the deity Paarvati. The belief about the structure of the temple is that it has been constructed out of polished stones, bonded with a mixture of flattened rice (avil) and jaggery (vellam). The present form of the temple is said to be more than a century old.
As commonly expected in the temples of Kerala, entry in modern dresses is prohibited for women and men have to wear dhothi with no shirts on top for entering inside the temple.
Adjacent to the temple is a beguiling rectangular temple pond (Ambala Kulam) of about 2.5 acres referred as Chira, which is always filled with water. The Chira has four major entrances that have been built using large layers of rock laid parallel to each other and also a sheltered portion, Kollapura, exclusively for the poojaris (priests) to bath.

Famous Parvathi temple in Kerala, supposed to be built in 5th century AD.The present form of the temple is more than century old. The name connotes that the goddess is the mother who vanquishes everybody's hunger. The goddess and lord Krishna are the chief deities here. This temple gives food to all devotees who come here for worship and want to take food. Food is offered two times, during lunch and dinner every day.

Temple is situated at Cherukunnu Thara which is in the Kannur Pazhayangadi Road. It's about One km from the main road. Main dieties are Lord Krishna and Annapoorneswari Devi. It's an ancient temple which depicts the traditional style of temples. The temple pond is one of the largest I have seen. Lunch and supper are served as Prasada. There is one point in Rajarajrswara temple in Taliparambu from where devotees worship goddes Annapoorneswari. As is common in North Kerala only traditional costumes are allowed inside the temple. men wear dhothi while entering the temple. Shirts are not allowed inside the temple.

The Annapoorneshwari Temple is located at Cherukunnu - few kms from Kannur city. Quiet, peaceful, old Kerala style temple. The deities here are Krishna and Annapoorneshwari. Surprisingly, one can go to the Devi temple only after praying to Lord Krishna. (There must be some story/reason for the same - I am not aware - but would be good to know)
The staff is quite helpful. As with many Kerala temples, you cannot enter wearing a shirt and pant.
The outside of the temple has a very old tree. Understand that the festival time here is in April (around Vishu)

Very quiet temple with a vast ground in front. Main deity is Annapoorneshwari but there is a Krishna temple adjoining it. Strange, the entrance to the main temple is through the Krishna temple.
