Standing in the center of the city of Aizuwakamatsu, Aizu Wakamatsu Castle is also called Tsuruga Castle. This was our second visit to Aizu Wakamatsu Castle and our first in about 20 years.
What was very different about 20 years ago was that the roof tiles had been replaced with red tiles. Compared to the previous black color, the whole castle tower looked calm.
When Aizu Wakamatsu Castle was built, it was black, but red tiles were developed in Aizu to withstand low temperatures and snowfall. Today, Tsuruga Castle is the only place where you can see the castle tower using red tiles.

The cherry blossoms were magnificent. Aizuwakamatsu Castle was a magnificent castle with a wide and deep moat. It is located on flat ground, so you can walk around it in about an hour and a half.

The park is well-maintained, there is a teahouse in front of the castle, a pleasure boat on the moat, and souvenir shops and restaurants around the park, so it is well-maintained as a tourist spot, so even if you don't feel like it's a castle itself, it is a landmark of Aizuwakamatsu, so I think it's enough to casually visit and enjoy the atmosphere and atmosphere.
The outside has been renovated, so it is very clean, or rather the white color stands out too much for a castle, but it is a building that will continue to be preserved and restored for future generations, so I personally like the white color and the beautiful color.
Inside is a history museum of Tsuruga Castle that makes full use of digital technology, and there are many substantial exhibits, and if you are interested, you could spend about half a day there.
Needless to say, the view from the castle tower is great to the east, west, north and south, and there is nothing to complain about.
The park and the area around the castle are quite large, so you will have to walk quite a bit on foot, but there are many shops and rest areas nearby, so instead of just seeing the castle and leaving quickly, I think it's good to take a stroll around.

I visited in mid-April. There were many people there to enjoy cherry blossoms. The cherry blossoms in full bloom were very beautiful. The photos of the cherry blossoms in full bloom with Tsuruga Castle in the background were very beautiful.

Located in Aizuwakamatsu, this castle is incredibly beautiful! It is the only red-roofed castle in all of Japan and was one of my favorites to visit. It is a reconstruction, not the original but I still very much enjoyed it. Aizuwakamatsu is pretty out there and thus less foreigners come here so please keep in mind there will be less English (signs, speakers, etc.) in this whole area. I highly recommend either learning some Japanese (at least basics: hotel, restaurant, museum, conversational) or hiring a Japanese-English speaking guide.
My husband is a history lover and he enjoyed explaining the history of the whole area to me. While there are no signs in English here (at least when we went), he knew the history anyway and I had a great time as he taught me. If coming as a couple or group, I would recommend at least one person learning history ahead of time so you can enjoy the castle more.
The area around the castle is absolutely beautiful! The large moat coming in reflected the beautiful foliage around it--wow! I am always amazed at how stunning the autumn colors are and how much they add to the ambiance. Right next to the main castle is a whole section dedicated to sakura trees. Spring time will be breathtakingly beautiful here! Be prepared for quite a bit of walking, the castle grounds are just as beautiful as the castle itself.
Sadly since we came during off season, we could not enter the castle as it was undergoing maintenance. Be sure to check online before coming if you want to go inside the castle. Luckily we got to see some of the seasonal castle activities (light shows, special off-area displays, etc.).
The store at the castle is adorable! Aizu specializes in a certain kind of fabric so be sure to pick something up for memories! Another specialty is their wooden akabeko (red cow) figurines and lacquerware. The lacquerware is BEAUTIFUL!! A tad expensive but I bought a few pieces for myself, totally worth it.
*This castle is a bit more difficult to get to for individuals with mobility disabilities. Some of the area around the castle is paved but much of it is gravel so it would be hard to use a walker or wheelchair. As all Japanese castles, going inside will have a lot of stairs and will be quite difficult to maneuver around to get up to all the levels. I would not recommend coming here if you want to see all of the castle/castle grounds.*

The castle stands in impressive grounds and is surrounded by a moat. The building is not original but a concrete reconstruction and is disappointing in that respect. There are some exhibits throughout the castle but no explanations in English. The view from the top of the castle across the city is very expansive. Certainly worth visiting if you are in Aizuwakamatsu, but not worth a special trip, except perhaps during the cherry blossom season.

The castle tower is a restored one, but it is well maintained and the interior has also been renovated. There are many documents inside the tower, so you can learn about the history of Aizu.

Tsurua jo Castle is a replica of what it used to be. The foundation, moat, and a tower stand today and there is a castle museum. It's worth walking the grounds, I feel this castle was impressive at some point in history. It's beautiful to walk around the grounds and see the castle. I can imagine it is especially beautiful during Sakura.

How easy is the access to the grounds? (NOT the inside climb to the top). I have been disappointed many times to arrive at a castle and find it inaccessible to me due to steep hill climbs and/or steps.

This castle is pretty easy to access. It is a short walk from the car park area and its not such a steep climb and only a few steps.

Fukushima airport is the closest, then, likely Niigata,,, but, overall, the cheapest place to fly to maybe Tokyo -- and then highway bus to Koriyama and then bus/train to Aizu
