Friendly staff!
Children's activities - the 3 children (9,8,7) spent over an hour dissecting owl pellets, they made natural wands, dug for bones, followed trails, learnt about old and restored buildings, played in the play areas and absolutely had a ball...!

Driven past many a time, but finally called in to see what was on offer. A very strange attraction, not what I expected, but as a history and architecture admirer it ticked both boxes. The setting is wonderful, acres of green land and woods all around. With lots of places for children to run around and play. Plenty of spaces for picnics, which I would recommend as the cafe was quite expensive for what was on offer which was limited. This is a pity as the site needs people to use all the facilities in order to maintain everything. If i lived nearer i would volunteer for one day a week as I would like to see it continue. I would recommend that they contact local farms and have a free range/organic butchers and green grocers shop near to the entrance. With the correct signing and publicity this would increase the visitors to the site

This could be very good with some very attractive buildings- and clearly supported by enthusiastic volunteers who were making period costumes.
Two problems:
1 Cafe is a disaster area- poorly organised and not impressive even on a quiet day.
2 Pricing structure- illogical. Normal entry fee has no differentiation between adults and concessions- yet season tickets do.
3 Volunteers on reception not very enthusiastic.
Not sure why anybody would want a season pass.

We were a family group of 6 from 5 to 77 . Everyone found something that they would remember from this visit. One the smell of the wood smoke in the Iron-age house reminded him of his Granny's home in Iran. Another the tools used to make butter as used by her mum as a child in Devon. The children aged 5 and 10 loved the animals and the freedom to roam. For myself it was the fabulous collection of tools and things made from wood from chairs to spoons. We had wonderful weather but there was much to see even if it were raining. The children loved the uniforms and we were delivered important messages from the front by a fully uniformed messenger disturbing our picnic.

Great fun apart from the on site catering which was very expensive and extremely poor quality. Plenty of space got grandson to run around.

If you enjoy history, I would highly recommend a vist here. Lots to see and lovely walks and Countryside. Could do with more signage to explain about the buildings etc, as most have none at all. The 'Working Farm' was rather a ghost town and didn't look like it had been 'working' for a century or two. If you're not into History, you may be bored. Let down by the cafe, which looks like it's run by volunteers, but still charge usual prices, so you do kind of expect to get usual kind of service / food. I would advise bring your own food, as there's plenty of benches, if you don't mind lugging it around with you.

World war 2 house and huts very good. It was all fantastic, mission hall, prefab house, toll gate, Iron age house a bit sobering. Excellent for children 10 and over and for older people. We were very grateful for use of mobility scooter, and the golf cart for tired legs is also a great service. What a wonderful place
..thanks to all the volunteers for creating this and preserving all these great buildings

We held our wedding here and booked a tour for our guests. It’s a really casual low key venue nothing over manufactured. Lots of picnic areas and space for children to run around. We appreciated the free water bottle filling station. We had a great day here.

This could be a brilliant attraction but it is pretty lacklustre. The buildings themselves are interesting but they are not “set” very well in terms of items of interest being displayed in them. That wouldn’t be an issue if there was more information on them, but there isn’t, meaning there just in any enough to look at. Other open air museums (eg St Fagans in South Wales) do this far better - a little inspiration and investment could really improve this site. Also, the woodland walk isn’t at all pram-friendly.

We visited the Chiltern Open Air Museum on an autumn weekend. Once past the two sets of security guards for the $200m+ Apple TV film production of ” Masters of the Air” we thought the museum must be closed as the car park was almost empty, but it was not, just not very busy.
The site contains more than 30 rescued buildings spanning two millennia of local history. My favourite buildings (in no particular order) were the 1826 High Wycombe Toll House, the Edwardian public toilets (whose period sound effects were a bit off-putting when try to go about one’s business) and the Iron Age Roundhouse. I believe the museum also has more than a dozen buildings in store waiting for the funds for them to be re-built. The most amazing thing to see was the Cherry Pickers Ladder (one of which I think was 18m long).
We enjoyed making a candle at a workshop at the far end of the site – but felt sorry for the guy running it as we saw no-one else in that part of the museum (the café that used to be there was closed).
Whilst this museum may be smaller than the similar Weald and Downland Living Museum at Singleton in West Sussex (home of the TV programme “The Repair Shop”) it was definitely worth a visit.

I cannot make it on a terrific Tuesday or special event day, but still want to take the children. Is there still plenty to do? Is it worth it?

Very much so, there's plenty of free parking and once you enter there's lots to see and do, the old buildings are part of it but there are outfits for kids to dress up in, victorian games to play with, animals to see, lots of woodland to run around, a playground area and a well that has funny sound recording when you roll a coin down, I bring a handful of small coins each time for this. There's also candle making which the kids like so yes it's worth it.

Can you use Tesco vouchers for the Victorian Christmas days? Will all the buildings be open on those days? My partner wants to see the Iron Age house.

Hi Laura
Thanks for your enquiry. As a registered charity and independent museum which costs over £1000 to run each day and receives no regular external funding, I'm afraid that we are not able to offer free entry. Details of our admission charges can be found on our website.

Hi there,
Whichever station you choose you would need to get a taxi to the Museum as it is approached down narrow country roads.I would not advise walking on them.
