Had a run over to Aldridge in Birmingham and paid a visit to the Aston manor transport museum. What a geat place, vehicles going right back to the 1930s, lots of buses, some you can go on.
Years of local history all in a place, well worth the visit.

We have lived in Aldridge for a few years and we only recently found out about the museum, so we decided to visit today as it is Bank Holiday Monday. On entering, we were greeted by 2 men who were very friendly & helpful, they are a credit to the museum! It was £4 per adult and free for the kids as they were under 5, we didn’t know the kids would go free so we expected to pay for them, but one of the men kindly told us, which we appreciated a lot as he could have easily just charged us for the kids! Before visiting, we incorrectly thought it would be just 1 or 2 buses and maybe a few old bus stop signs, but we couldn’t have been more wrong! There are loads of old buses, some dating back to the 1950’s, most of which you can go on. There are also a number of different cars and vehicles from the past, all with interesting information about them. The place is like a vehicle time capsule! My children both loved climbing onboard the old buses and sitting in the drivers cabin on some of them! There is also a little shop which sells refreshments and snacks, and loads of old books and trinkets from the past. My only criticism is that it is not very well advertised, there is no sign on the main road to tell you that there is a museum down there, which is a shame as it really is a hidden gem which I’m sure would be much busier if people knew it was there! I will definitely be returning in the future and I have told all my friends and family how great it is there!

Thank you for your review; we really appreciate you taking the time to tell everyone about the Museum. There is actually a sign on the main road, but it is very small and part of someone else's sign, but there are planning and ownership issues with putting a larger sign. Come again soon!

Warmly welcomed and escorted to reception. General overview of the museum given along with the offer of a guided tour. We chose to make own way around the site. Volunteers were unobtrusive but very helpful when we asked for more information about particular displays. Well worth a visit which brought back happy memories of bygone days.
A drinks vending machine would have added to the pleasure of a couple hours well spent..

We visited on a Tuesday with our grandson, aged 6. He throughly enjoyed himself, as we did. The museum is packed with the history of transport and has more to offer than London's Transport Museum at Covent Garden at a fraction of the price. Aston Manor Road Transport Museum started in the 1980's at Witton Tram Shed in Birmingham before moving to its new premises Aldridge Transport Museum.
This is a real "hands on" museum run by volunteers who worked in the transport industry. Buses and Coaches sit alongside commercial vehicles and delivery vehicles. From Hand carts to horse drawn carts to a 1965 electric milk float, demonstrating that electric vehicles are not a new invention.
There is even a wooden car.
Sit behind the wheel of a double decker bus, board a Routemaster, see a fleet of buse, single and double decker, in their original livery. There's even an ice cream van from the 1950's, pre Mr Whippy!
East access, free parking and affordable admission. You will not be disappointed.
There are open days when some of the buses are running. Highly recommend, you will not be disappointed and the children will enjoy the hands on experience.

Visited on Sunday with our 4 year old son and 10 year old niece. It's quite a small place, but the children loved it. Our son had asked to visit a transport museum in February half term (he's obsessed with cars and all other vehicles). He said that this is the best transport museum we've been to (and we've been to a few), because at this one, he was allowed to 'play' (enter the vehicles and pretend to drive them. Staff told us when we arrived that the children were welcome to do so). He had fun playing on the double decker buses with his cousin, going up and down the stairs and taking turns pretending to be a bus driver. (You aren't able to go inside all of the vehicles on display, but a good number of them).
It was quiet when we visited (only a couple of other groups). We didn't need to pay for our son, which we didn't expect, as we'd seen that children were £2 but didn't know that under 5s were free. He was also given a guide/information booklet about the vehicles.
Friendly staff welcomed us, told us about the museum and gave us a leaflet about upcoming events and open days.
We spent a couple of hours in the museum. We noticed on the way out that there were lots of trail/activity sheets for children (laminated sheets with, for example, pictures of various wheels to find in the museum) which our son would have enjoyed if we'd noticed them beforehand - maybe next time.
We travelled around 40 minutes to get here and combined it with lunch and the poolside fairy trail at WM Wheat and Son garden centre which was a 5 minute drive down the road).
There are toilets at the museum and free parking right in front of the entrance.

I visited on Tuesday, it was really good as there were not many people there and I could take photographs of the vehicles on display. I was even allowed to move some of the display boards to get a better angle. The staff there were really knowledgeable and friendly-Highly recommended.

Visited their spring running day where a number of vintage vehicles from the local area were able to be ridden on. The museum is both entertaining and educating. Anyone who remembers the bygone heyday of bus travel will love this place.

Support your local unique museums. At only £4 per person admission it brings back memories of bygone vehicles. All maintained by volunteers.Mainly buses with a few commercial vehicles and a couple of bikes plus advertising of the time.Remember swinging on the bus rails on the way to school?

Currently, adult admission is £3, children £2, family ticket £9. Children under 5 are free. Higher prices apply on most event days, which are shown on the event adverts.
Hope that helps, let us know if you have any other queries.

Hi, is the museum suitable for small children?
كُتب بتاريخ 23 يوليو 2018
I wouldn't advise taking children under the age of about 10, at a push 8 as they will me bored within 10 mins.

We're open from 10.30 to 16.00 on Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday each week. Times may vary slightly on event days, for instance, we normally open about half an hour earlier when we have a Running Day. See the website or our Facebook page for more information. Thanks for asking.

Hello, there. Thanks for the enquiry; the museum is all on one level, with no steps, so there is no general problem with wheelchair access. The only issue is that our vehicles are not wheelchair accessible, so, the privilege that we give of actually getting into some of the exhibits would not, we're sorry to say, be possible. At this stage, we also do not have fully accessible toilets; these are planned, but progress towards that will depend on future funding.
We also have an upstairs room, which is occasionally used for special functions and, again, plans exist to make that accessible in future, when funds allow. However, that room is normally not in use and we have, on odd occasions in the past, made alternative arrangements for visitors who are unable to use the stairs.
We hope that you feel you are able to visit; let us know in advance if you need any special assistance.
