We where so amazingly received by Emily, Burm and their team. A special shout out to Ty, Em and Tanjung who took extra care of us.
Really, if you are looking for a place that is super chill and works so hard to provide as good and ethical as possible for the elephants, look no further. Think home stay care and community with a lot of info about elephants, their care and history and Forrest adventure. We felt like having a private experience. There where 3 other guests and they have a maximum capacity of 12.
With the elephants there is a no touch policy and they where very careful with the distance to the animals so there is no interference with their daily stroll through the wide forest and river. It was amazing to see them so happy! What a good experience of seeing these beautiful girls enjoying life to the fullest. This place is on the world animal protection list for a reason. I would totally want to be an elephant at BEES!
We stayed one night and where so surprised with the full package of activities they organised for us. Visiting a waterfall, preparing lunch voor one of the elderly elephants, trek through the forest, lunch in the banana fields, tubing, playing games and making bracelets together. We even got a good bye gifts. And oooo all the other rescues (dogs and cats) were so friendly and cuddly. We miss everybody (people and animals) already. Thank you for this amazing experience!
Please don’t hesitate to book. BEES is on the frontline of ethical elephant care in Thailand. The people are so passionate. There can only be change for these amazing animals if we support such good causes! With your stay you also contribute to the movement of not using the elephant for tourists and labour but putting knowledge to organisations so that everybody takes good care of mistreated elephants and they can have a better life.

What a beautiful experience. It’s a shame that not more people know about what a great sanctuary Burm and Emily are running. Everyone at the sanctuary was so welcoming from day one and the people made the experience as much as the elephants.
Seeing the elephants doing their thing was an amazing experience. It was also great to chill with all the dogs and cats in the downtime.

If you want a unique hands off experience watching elephants trek through forest to the river this is a must! Burm and Emily have put their heart and soul into caring for these retired working elephants. The staff are all amazing, ‘Em, Te, Nei Nei, Go, Joy all make your stay extremely comfortable and the food is amazing. Seeing elephants in their natural habitat is what I came to see and BEES delivered in spades. Other activities included tubing down the river, swimming in the fresh water spring pools, visiting the village temple, enjoying a herbal sauna, patting the dogs and cuddling the cats. The best experience in a very relaxed environment. From an overnight stay to volunteering for a week this is an absolute MUST. You will not be disappointed, a truly magical experience. Thank you so very much BEES I will definitely be back. !

There's so much I want to say about my experience but I know I will undoubtedly fail to perfectly encapsulate how this place and these people made me feel. I will tell you this. Go there. It will be the most incredible experience you will ever have not to mention the most soul-warming and personally fulfilling experience you will ever have.

BEES is a magical place that will change your life! This was our third visit and we will definitely be back for a 4th visit! Everything about BEES is exceptional and puts the elephants and animals before anything else. The animals comfort, health and happiness are the priority and is evident in every moment you spend at BEES. It is impressive what two young people, Emily and Burm, with a simple love for elephants and animals have created BEES. Experiencing life at BEES, if even for a short time is something you will never forget.
The experience: from the moment you are picked up on Chiang Mai you are treated like family. Tan is an exceptional driver, very patient and knowledgeable about Thailand and knows all the best scenic and food stops! Oh and he can sing! When you arrive you are greeted by the incredible staff who are just like family .... Got and Ty (will plan the best the best experiences for your stay and teach you so much about elephants, life in northern Thailand and introduce you to new foods and experiences), Labang (one of the most amazing northern Thai chefs ever!!!), Nay Nay (definitely the fun of the group... always laughing and smiling) and of course all the four and three legged friends who give you the best welcome party ever! Each dog, cat and elephant has a beautiful rescue story and you will have so many new friends before you leave.
Each day is a new adventure! You will never be bored ... jungle treks watching the elephants, swimming in the river, learning how to make elephant salad, or chopping grass and banana trees are just a few of the fun things you will experience. Got and Ty will teach you all about local foods, desserts and how to raft, and show you the best places to see a sunset and you will probably get to go to some wonderful little local markets.
The facilities are more than adequate and clean with real showers, running water and toilets. Laundry is available (you will get dirty... bring long sleeve shirts and pants that you don’t mind working in:). There is lots of leisure time as well so definitely bring your relaxing clothes to sit and hang out in a hammock and enjoy the sunsets and scenery!
Overall, this is an experience that cannot be missed. I highly recommend staying for at least 3 night or longer but if all you have is a single night it is totally worth not missing this very special place .
Emily, Burm and their wonderful staff have changed the lives of many elephants are ensuring their 3 beautiful elephants can just be elephants. My wish is that all elephant ‘sanctuaries’ would learn from BEES example of how to care for elephants. Please visit and Support BEES and visit! It is such a special experience that will change your life!
We can’t wait for our 4th visit.

Realmente recomendable. Una experiencia única.

We had the most amazing adventure with the staff, Burm and Emily at the BEES elephant sanctuary. We decided to do a day trip as our time was short. We rented a car in Chiang Mai and visited the temples on Doi Inthanon on our way over to Mae Chaem. We stayed at the Hot Coffee guesthouse 15 minutes north of the sanctuary. We arrived at 8:00 at BEES and were met by the rescue dogs and a friendly Emily. A lovely breakfast was waiting for us with lots of fresh fruit!
Once we had our safety briefing we went to the elephant stalls and cleaned the area with a few other volunteers. We learned a lot about the approach that the sanctuary takes to making elephants and people safe. Their approach is very respectful of the retired elephants.
We then went for a gorgeous jungle hike along and through the river with Burm and our guide Got. We wandered along the river watching the elephants bath and feed through limestone cliffs and jungle. Note that this route would not be possible in the rainy season.
We had a picnic along the river where we ate delicious lunch that was packed for us. The elephants were wandering around the river and eating grass while we ate. The Mahout were always close by and gently talking to the elephants. It was incredible to see the elephants so relaxed and at ease and to be able to hike alongside them. Even without the elephants it would have been a beautiful walk.
This visit was a once in a lifetime experience to be with elephants in their natural habitat. You are not allowed to touch or ride the elephants as they are rescued and now retired. They are being given a safe place to live without being harassed by well meaning tourists. So, we take only photographs and leave very large elephant footprints and enjoy the beauty of being near the majestic animals.
Huge gratitude to Emily and Burm and their staff for a special Christmas Eve adventure. Thank you for all that you do for Mae Chaem and the surrounding area. We will be back!!

Bees is a beautiful project with amazing people. The focus lies on the welfare of the elephants, a sanctuary that truly cares about elephants. These beautiful and intelligent animals can enjoy their older age in a large natural environment. At BEES you can enjoy observing the 3 ladys while they dig up roots to eat, while they easily climb up hills (or mountains ;) ) and while they enjoy their time at the river. They spend the day foraging through the woods/forest and they are allowed to be picky because nature provides a large variety of all trees, bushes, leafs, bark, grass,...The hands off policy is perfect for the elephants and amazing for visitors so you can see real elephant behauvior.
Except from the elies BEES rescued several dogs and cats that have been trough trauma. Each of them lovely and unique.
Thanks to the amazing staff I immediately felt welcome when i arrived at the sanctuary. They work hard to give the best care possible to animals and to the help the local community.
I will come back in the future because it hard to find a real sanctuary, where the quality of life comes first.

Hi there all you who have experienced what sounds like an amazing wonderful time at BEES sanctuary! I am scheduled to go soon - Nov 27 - Dec 3. Any recommendations on what should bring/absolutely not forget? The temperature should be in the mid 80's F/high 20's C. Bug/Deet spray? SPF level? Hats? Long sleeves/pants for temple visits? Gifts/needed items? I know money donations always appreciated. I will ask Emily and Burm before leaving but I know they are so busy on the sanctuary, so any volunteer advice much appreciated! Thanks!!!

Ahh, I'll be there the week prior! First off, it is amazing, and you will love it. It does get cold in the mornings and at night, so make sure to have some long sleeves/pants (a hoodie is good, I slept in mine with my hood up a night or two!). Bug spray with Deet. SPF for sure (I use a pretty high level because I've got the luck of the Irish and burn!).
For temple visits throughout Thailand, knees and shoulders should be covered. I've heard that some even require ankles. I always wear a long skirt, t-shirt and carry a scarf to use as a shawl. A hat is a good idea, you're outside quite a bit in the sun. There was a collection of rain boots when I was there in February from volunteers who left them behind.
Bring some socks, flip flops for bumming around the project and a pair of sneakers that you won't mind getting elephant poop and river water on (though, this is where the boots are handy!). Gardening gloves are good to bring and leave behind, shovelling and sweeping the elephant enclosures can be hard on your hands if you don't have calluses built up already.
Cash gifts go a long way, but if you stay for weeks visit, you'll most likely visit one of the local schools. Some volunteers I was with brought stickers for the kids (if you do bring something, make sure you bring enough for everyone in the class). Make sure you bring a travel towel, a little flashlight for night time bathroom visits (I've never seen darkness or stars like it out there, so make sure you look up often because it is amazing!)
There are a lot of dogs and cats, some people bought some flea shampoo when we stopped at the grocery store on the way to the sanctuary. When I left the sanctuary, I left a bunch of stuff behind (boots, gloves, hats, towel, grubby clothes, etc) they will clean them up and if in good shape donate them to the locals, or use them in the animal enclosures.
Have a great time! It's an amazing place with amazing people and animals!

After BEES confirmed my requested volunteering date via email and I then wire transferred the volunteer fee to the BEES bank account, how long did it take to hear from them they received the fee into their account? I do not want to book my flight to Chiang Mei until I receive the ok from them. I am so very excited! I hope this all works out!

I would say a few days to a week, check in on the Facebook site with a message to the owners. It's an odd thing for us to pay/trust this kind of payment, but it's on the up and up and if you sent it, should have no issue! Everything about the whole experience is AMAZING! You'll work hard, eat better than you imagined, be humbled, fall in love with a dog or two. I'm heading back soon myself. It's life changing and the real deal! Have an amazing time!

Hi! Emily runs the contact stuff, but she's always really busy with everything on the sanctuary like taking in a new elephant and also raising her toddler son with Burm. Try a Facebook message on their page because that's another more effective way to contact them and check your junk mail box in case their emails went to junk mail. If all else fails, try calling Burm's cell (on their webpage). Just be persistent!

Would it be okay for a six year old child to stay at the sanctuary? Also, how far away is it from the airport?
Kat
كالجاري, كندا227 مساهمة
I believe 10 years old is the age set in place by the sanctuary. Six years old would be very young. The sanctuary is 2-3 hours outside of Chiang Mai, the project offers hotel pickup in the Old City.

You do not need a visa if you will be in Thailand as a vacation for less than thirty days. Most vaccines that people get are the typhoid vaccine and the malaria pills.
