‪King Stephen was the first king of Hungary, and a descendant of one of the Chieftains of one of the Hungarian tribes. Named Vajk at birth, he later became a Christian and a successful military leader who unified the country within the Carpatian basin. His policies strongly encouraged conversion and practice of Christianity and, as a result, Hungary became a Christian country. As a result, he was canonized in 1083 and is one of the most revered Hungarian saints. This statue commemorates both his accomplishments as a king and military leader as well as his championing of the Christian faith. In his right hand he holds the cross, symbolizing his pro-Christian policies. On the side of the pedestal on which the statue was placed, there is an exquisite relief of St. Stephen and his wife, Gizella of Bavaria, also of Imperial descent.‬
