We followed a circular route - from the free parking, up to the cave then around the hills and back to the car. It was listed as dog friendly and for the most part it was! They enjoyed the walking, and the cave itself
A couple of negatives though:
Lots of stiles in the area. Our dogs were all fine with them, but definitely something to watch out for if your dogs are older or bigger and need a helping hand!
The cave is VERY slippy. We went on a dry day, but it was still extremely slippy and difficult to get in and out of. We managed just fine, as it was very quiet when we were there, but I wouldn't much enjoy getting in and out with dogs and crowds around.
Otherwise, lovely walk in a nice area. I recommend parking at the end of the manifold valley trail, rather than in wetton though, as you avoid the hairpin bends on the drive into the village!

Good trip. There is parking right near the bottom of the trek.
Very steep steps. The rocks inside the cave are very slippery. Good for photos.
Nice for a short day trip. Spent about 3-4 hours there.
Also took my dog.

What a fascinating place!!! We did a day trip here to explore the caves and it was delightful. It took us a full morning to go upto the cave, see the cave. I would recommend doing this walk with walking shoes/boots that have a good grip as it’s easy to slip on the rock. Otherwise the moment you get to the top there are some stunning views to admire. It is worth a visit

We set off from our base in Matlock baths to find this place and what a great morning we had. A lovely drive through the dales on some very peaceful, winding country roads towards the small village of Wetton, and then following the signs for the cave down some very narrow lanes! Take care when driving and keep an eye out for a pull in where you can park the car. There is a small cafe nearby and a campsite but head through the gate and follow the footpath to the cave and prepare for a steep climb. Once up all of the steps you get a wonderful view of the countryside and the chance to scramble around in the cave and get some cool photos. Once finished and climbed back down go for lunch in one of the small villages in the area .

Well worth the aching calfs and other muscles to see this place. It is up quite a difficult climb if you are not fit. But oh my it is worth is. Once you arrive, take care on the stones it is very slippery from the millions of feet that have been in/out of the cave.
A must do if you are in the area.

Thor's Cave is a cool little place in the peak district to check out. There's a car park nearby, then it's just a short hike (around 20-25 minutes) to get to the cave itself (just follow the signs from the car park) – I'd get to the car park early because it's free, so it fills up pretty quickly. There are nice, clean (and free) toilets at the car park as well, which is really handy.
I felt like a tomb raider climbing up, walking into the mouth of the cave lol; it gives you that sort of impression. (When I say "climb" I mean you have to crawl up a couple of rocks to be able to enter the cave's mouth; it's nothing too strenuous.)
The cave was a bit bigger than I expected too, once you reach the mouth it'll have you standing there, sizing it up and taking it in for a good minute.
The mouth of the cave looks out onto a nice little view.
I honestly got more than I bargained for with this one, definitely recommend paying it a visit.

Loves thors cave, free parking and a cafe and toilets nearby where you park, bit of a hike to the cave and plenty of steps to the top but well worth it

Beautiful. Well worth a visit. Very slippery inside the cave! Best car park location is what 3 words: sprays.geologist.unzipped
If you park there walk out the car park with the toilets to your right then take the next right hand turn, walk along the road and take a left the pathway is then signposted and is a short walk. My dog and I walked there and back in 1hr 30 but stopped in the cave for a photo and walked to the top of it to.

We stopped here on the way from Haworth back to Birmingham to make the most of the last day of the holiday, and it was definitely worth the detour!
We parked at the little NT Wetton tea rooms and walked up. Lovely stroll along the road to the foot of the hill, then a gradual climb. Tough on the knees in places, but doable if done steadily. Take care if wet as could be very slippy.
The cave itself is impressive (take care if wet as was slippy even on a dry day!) with some great photo opps - we were lucky as very few people there
Standing at the top of the cave, a bit more of a climb, was even more impressive, and if you've made it that far a must do!

Be aware! Combination of very steep steps and uneven mud tracks, which in the winter when we did this walk were extremely slippy, making it a hazardous walk to reach the Cave from the valley below. Very difficult to access the Cave itself once you arrive at the entrance. Views of the surrounding countryside from the Cave entrance are lovely.

Is it an easy walk or better for experienced walkers. Thanks

It’s a fairly easy walk, lots of steps really once you find the track. However I would recommend wearing walking boots due to underfoot being sloppy when wet.

Hello, wanting to go to Thor’s cave on Saturday afternoon - can someone advise where is best to park the car and how long it takes to walk to the cave and back? Thanks.

We found free parking on Carr’s Lane Wetton. The walk to the cave is roughly 15mins. You will have to use a map to find the way along the road (not far) to the entrance of the lane to the cave, then it’s easy enough following the grassy track.

it's a bit of a scramble to get in and it doesn't go too far back. about 20 or 30 metres if memory serves.

Does anyone have an exact postcode for the car park in Wetton that's best to use for thor's cave? Thank you!

Hi Anna,
There is only one public car park in Wetton I believe. There is a road which runs around the whole of wetton. The car park is on the south side where the public toilets are. You shouldn't miss them.
Hope this helps.

Hi guys,
I am looking to visit this area on the weekend during saturday day. Is there any areas where I could wild camp at all? As I am coming from south east england so a good 3/4 hour drive I would like to camp saturday night ( Obviously would have no fire, set up late and leave early, leaving no mess etc) I know in peak district it is generally tolerated if I am discreet, away from paths etc. Just asking if there is any woodland nearby possibly?
Thanks,
Rob
