Without going into historical perspective, I can state a fact: a stunning place with strong energy! Views from the Volga River are stunning: the golden-headed churches of the monastery are framed by a fortress wall with watchtowers. Everything inside is very well maintained, old temples, apple trees, lots of flowers, the cake shop sells delicious pastries... The tour of the monastery was led by a villager-tour guide who introduced us to its history, temples and shrines. Calm, measured, I wanted to stay longer...
ps. as such river trips are very popular, I recommend booking your trip strongly in advance!

I met the personality of Macarius of Zheltovodsky (aka Macarius of Unzhensky), an Orthodox monk, miracle worker, missionary to the peoples of the Volga region, canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church as a saint, more than once on my travel routes. The saint actively made his mark in the Nizhny Novgorod region and in the Kostroma lands, but he did not ignore our region. In September 2023, during a trip along the Volga, I replenished my personal “piggy bank” of visited monasteries, adding to them a THIRD monastery, founded by the venerable dromomaniac.
And so, let’s get acquainted - the Holy Trinity Makariev Zheltovodsk Monastery in the village of Makaryevo, Lyskovsky district, Nizhny Novgorod region!!! Leaving the car in Lyskovo and sailing on the ferry to Makaryevo, I involuntarily remembered the lines of Svetlana Egorova dedicated to this place of prayer:
“The Volga region is famous for its beauty.
There are holy, wonderful places.
Among them is Macarius Zheltovodsky –
There the pilgrim’s soul is pure...”
Reviewing the photos taken after the trip, I was once again convinced that the most wonderful shots that give a complete picture of the beauty of the monastery are taken from the water.
Well, you can see this for yourself in my photographs. Comparing previously visited monasteries, the history of which is associated with Makariyev-Reshemsky monastery in the Kineshma district of our region, as well as Makaryev-Unzhensky Holy Trinity Monastery in the city of Makaryev, Kostroma region), I can sincerely say that the Nizhny Novgorod The Makaryevsky monastery was impressive, no offense to others, it’s much cooler. I’ll allow myself not to copy-paste Net’s information about the history of the monastery - if you wish, you can read it yourself.
I will dwell on its architectural component - I believe it will be both interesting and useful for the traveling brethren. Let me start with the fact that in this monastery today there are as many as FIVE religious buildings: the Life-Giving Trinity (cathedral), the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Michael the Archangel, Macarius of Zheltovodsk and Gregory of Pelshem. And all of them are active. This alone puts connoisseurs of temple building into a positive mood!!! Walking through the monastery territory, you will plunge into the history of sacred architecture of Rus' starting from the 17th century.
You will also get to know a wonderful example of the “metropolitan” classicist style (I would even say close to the Empire style) - I’m talking about the Church of Macarius of Unzhensky and Zheltovodsk. And another building, as well as the personality of the saint who gave it its “name,” was a curiosity for me personally, a fairly experienced temple lover. I mean the Church of Gregory of Pelshem. Firstly, the sacred place is located in the FORTRESS TOWER. Precisely a serf, and not a gate sacral (I have met the type of gate sacral more than once). Just in case, let me remind you: in 1662-1667, the monastery territory of an almost regular square shape was surrounded by a real fortress wall with spindles up to eight meters high and up to two and a half meters thick. The wall was reinforced with nine powerful towers.
It was in one of them, located to the left of the central entrance to the monastery with the gate church of St. Michael the Archangel, that a temple was built in 1786. The second interesting point about this sacral is that it was consecrated in honor of St. Gregory of Pelshem. Personally, before visiting Makaryevo and the local monastery, this name meant NOTHING!!! It turns out that this same Gregory of Pelshemsky (aka Gregory of Vologda) is another dromomaniac tramp, canonized as a saint, famous for having founded the Grigory-Pelshemsky Lopotov Bogoroditsky Monastery in the vicinity of the city of Kadnikov (this is in the Sokolsky district of the Vologda region) on the Pelshema River.
In addition to the Makarievo-Zheltovodsky Monastery, there are sacred places consecrated in honor of the mentioned Orthodox figure in only three places in the Vologda region!!! In addition to the most interesting sacred component, the monastery I visited in Makaryevo will certainly be of interest to connoisseurs of fortification art. Personally, I take off my hat to the fortress-building geniuses who erected the Makarievsky defensive fortifications. Everything is smart here, as they say: a well-chosen layout of the fortification composition itself, taking into account the features of the landscape and terrain, and the reliability of the elements of fortress construction (I mean the profile of the walls, the configuration of the towers, the length of the fortification front, the covered parapet, and machicolations, and location of loopholes etc.).
I am glad that all this sacred and fortification beauty is maintained in decent condition. Saying goodbye to this simply unique place, which has some kind of inexplicable divine aura, I again “extracted” from my memory the lines of Svetlana Egorova dedicated to this monastery:
“It goes into the clouds in domes,
The shine of crosses pierces the expanse of the sky.
Like a swan with white wings
The monastery looks majestically.”
I definitely recommend!!!

Visited with family. The place is quiet and peaceful. Everything in the monastery itself is well maintained. The view of the monastery is simply unreal. The temple was closed for restoration.

In the nearly six centuries that have passed since the founding of the monastery on the Yellow Lake by the Monk Macarius of Zheltovodsk and Unzhensk, a lot of water has passed under the bridge. Literally and figuratively. The lake no longer exists, it is now in the Volga. But the monastery, despite the turbulent history of its ruin and revival, is fortunately in its place. In 1991, at the end of the Soviet period of persecution of the church, the monastery was returned to the church and the next stage of its revival began. Nowadays the monastery looks magnificent and walking through it is a pleasure. If time and circumstances permit, then for a walk around the monastery it is advisable to book an excursion conducted by the sisters (nurses of the monastery). The perception of information about a monastery is completely different if it comes from a person who not only lives in a monastery, but lives in this monastery. It goes without saying that additional bonuses are magnificent views, both from the monastery to the Volga, and from the Volga to the monastery... PS. The Holy Trinity Makarievsky Zheltovodsky Convent is open for visits by pilgrims and tourists from 07.00. until 19.00.
