‪Hitler's troops were stopped at Mestia in the far north of Georgia and as a result could not reach the strategically important Baku oilfields.

Because Kutaisi and Georgia as a whole remained firmly in the hands of the Soviet army it could serve as a reinforcement area. While 700,000 mostly Georgian men but also women took part directly in the fighting with the red army, mothers and sisters were working in the factories to produce parts of tanks and other military equipment. In Kutaisi there were seven hospitals where wounded soldiers were treated. Even Kutaisi's grandmothers were knitting warm socks for their solders.

No wonder Nazi Germany was defeated. It was a people's war, a Great Patriotic War indeed.

What I do not understand is why this history is not more widely commemorated. Every year on the 8th of May the remaining veterans gather in this museum. This year just 25 remained. There is only a rather small commemoration ceremony with government officials at the monument in Didebis Baghi (Park of Glory).‬

‪We arrived and were greeted by a lovely old man who was so enthusiastic and asked us lots of questions about our home country. Than a lady came and took us around and explained the photos and pieces. Super welcoming place in spite of the topic! ‬

‪This museum commemorates Georgia's experience in the Second World War and more recent conflicts in South Ossetia, Abkhazia and Afghanistan (with the UN, not during the Soviet period). When I entered there were no lights on, but a group of people huddled round a table near the entrance. A young woman put the lights on and gave me a guided tour. The exhibits are mainly copies of photographs and newspaper reports, though there are a fewv pieces of uniforms and memorabilia. There are no captions in English so the guide is really the only option. Her English was fairly good, though heavily accented so sometimes a bit difficult to understand. At the end I was introduced to an elderly gentleman who actually spoke better English, asked me where I was from and invited me to sign the guest book. The museum is worth a look, but not exactly essential!‬

‪There isn't a great deal to do inside the city centre so we visited all of the museums possible. This one was not the largest and is tucked away but it was certainly the most interesting and the enthusiasm of the staff just made it.

As previous reviews confirm there is very little English translation and initially we were shown around by an elderly male whose English was very good. A younger female (possibly family) then arrived and took over. Her English was excellent and she showed us around and gave us the history of Georgia's involvement from World War One to present day.
At the end we signed the guest book and even had our photos taken!! I don't think there are many tourists from England.

The museum is donation funded. Certainly worth a look in.‬

‪The museum has an interesting collection, but almost no English translation. We were escorted around the exhibit by a staff member with broken English. She was lovely and tried her best to help us. I recommend going, but do not expect to be there long. Hopefully some more translations will be done soon.‬

‪The museum is right near the city center. We were welcomed by a very enthusiastic gentlemen who also ensured we get a guided tour in English. The information was basic, but the exhibits should be quite interesting for history enthusiasts, ranging from WW2 to the recent conflicts. No entrance fee required, but writing in the guest book in your own language is highly appreciated.‬

‪Small museum, as the name suggests, tucked away in the centre of Kutaisi. Mainly old photographs of various campaigns over the last 100 years or so. Not very busy (i.e. empty) but had a sort of guided tour from a girl who spoke quite good English. Was supposed to be free but the old bloke clipped us for 5 Gel each on the way out... possibly for the guide though no ticket or receipt. Watch out for the general's winter fur coat. Place desperately in need of some aircon. Worth a visit if you have a particular interest in Georgian military glory.‬
