Schitterend kerkje op een onwaarschijnlijk mooie plek. Het bijzondere verhaal over het kerkje werd heel enthousiast verteld door de gids in het kerkje. Je kunt er niet zelf met de auto naartoe. Er rijden pendelbusjes vanaf het busstation in Tolmin. Wij troffen toevallig een Nederlandse chauffeur. Het is een pittige klim naar het kerkje maar zeer de moeite waard. Echt een uniek plekje.

Wow.
First was the trip itself. Access is a single lane, mostly gravel road that winds it’s way up through the steep mountains to the church. Occasional spots exist where cars can carefully get by one another. There are only a few guard rails and they are generally located where there is enough room for them. Otherwise, we felt very exposed - it is a long way down over the edge. If you are venturous take the drive, otherwise take the shuttle.
Once you reach the parking lot by car or shuttle, you have a steep walk on a paved path to the church. Seeing it finally appear in the distance is rewarding as this is a very serene location high in these mountains. We were early visitors and once climbing the final sets of stairs made our way into the building. And there, we found a fellow, a historian, who described its history. This was a beautiful story that described the soldiers who came together to build this place to honor their fallen comrades. Inspiring.
Finally, for the drive back down, we waited for another car to go first. It sure felt safer that way.

Although the way to Javorca was slightly scary because of the precipice, it was worth it. The church is very beautiful. Also the landscape.

Uscendo dalle Gole del Tolminska abbiamo proseguito (in macchina) verso Javorca, addentrandoci nella valle. Il parcheggio si raggiunge dopo c.ca 8km di pista forestale, adatta a qualsiasi tipo di macchina, ma che necessità di attenzione alla guida (alcuni punti sono stretti ed altri non ancora muniti di guard rail). Alla fine si raggiunge un comodo parcheggio, nei pressi di un bunker (aperto e visitabile con una torcia, facendo attenzione a dove si mettono i piedi) che proseguendo a piedi porta nella parte alta della Tolminska Valley oppure al memoriale di Javorca (strada che sale sulla sinistra). La stradina è ripida in salita, ma affrontabile anche per i meno allenati, per circa 1,5km, dopo i quali si raggiunge il memoriale. Il paesaggio è fantastico, l'ambiente un'oasi di pace. La visita all'interno costa 4€, c'è una guida che ne illustra la storia, interessante e con molti spunti di riflessione.

This can be a little tricky to get to, but it is entirely worth the effort. I'd been on the fence about going as I was trying to fit a lot of sightseeing into a small amount of time, and I'm so glad that I didn't skip it. The chapel is beautiful and in lovely condition, and the relative isolation gives a small taste as to what sort of environment it was that the folks on the front here during WWI were operating in.
There are no toilets on site - there are a pair of port-a-potties in the parking area roughly 1.5 kilometers downhill from the chapel, although I think these are seasonal. There is a tap behind the chapel built into a perimeter wall that one can drink from - much to my relief given how hot it was the day I went.
There's a shuttle which runs frequently from Tolmin, information for which is available at the hotels in the town as well as in the town museum. I drove and then hiked, as I was not eager to share a van in these COVID times. This involved roughly seven kilometers on a narrow and winding mountain road before I parked at the base of the final ascent. It is also possible to simply hike this road, which I saw a decent number of people doing. The final bit is roughly a kilometer and a half up-hill on a well-paved road that is set at a steep grade. It was a VERY hot day when I went, so I was beat by the time I reached the top, especially as I hadn't adjusted to the altitude yet.

This is special place in the nature. Peaceful. Nice church and view. The guide given good and interested information about this church and 1. world war.
Way by car is a little "crazy" - the road is very very narrow and if you are not a good driver, you can have problems....
From parking place after this crazy road , you need 20 minutes to church.

We tried driving up here and it was a pretty harrowing experience. We're well traveled (20 countries and counting) We didn't make it to the top of this road because about 1 kilometer in the road becomes too narrow for two cars and turns from asphalt into gravel. The road continues to ascend and there are NO guardrails. There is definitely not enough room for two cars to fit, luckily we didn't run into any other cars.
We got about 3 kilometers in and it was so high at that point my husband and I were both pretty scared. We decided to try to turn around but there was no way to do so. We continued on and were lucky that the road widened out at a certain point and we turned around and got the heck out of there. Promptly went to the local coffee shop and sat there for an hour trying to recompose ourselves.
We then went to the tourist office to ask or advice on places to go for the day and the woman at the tourist office suggested we visit this place. I told her that we were just there and that the road was scary and that it did'nt seem wide enough for two cars. SHe laughed and said "It's a mystery how two cars can fit!" and I thought to myself, "Lol, I don't think there's any mystery there's a bunch of dead tourists at the bottom of that ravine!"
Triglav is a beautiful area but this particular pass is frightening and in my opinion not worth risking it.

We vertrokken beneden aan de parking en gingen 7km te voet. Achteraf gezien viel de weg best mee in vergelijking met sommige andere wegen in Slovenië. Mocht je toch geen held zijn in de auto, er vertrekt vanuit het dorp 1 maal per dag een busje naar de parking boven, vlakbij de kerk.
Maar er heen wandelen is ook zeker de moeite. Geen te stijlen stukken,heel veel vlinders en een paar mooie beekjes onderweg. Na 7km kom je op de parking boven. Niet verschieten, de koeien liggen daar tussen de auto's. Van daaruit ben je echt zo bij het kerkje. Even een stijlen helling maar het pad is goed aangelegd. Wanneer je de bocht omgaat en plots het kerkje ziet...echt speciaal. Als je boven parkeert en enkel het kerkje doet, ben je nogal snel klaar. Maar je kan er rond en in de buurt ook heel mooi wandelen.
De 4€ inkom hebben we zonder morren betaald. Dit is onderhoudsgeld voor het kerkje. Het is niet groot, er is niet superveel te zien, maar het is wel echt heel uniek van stijl.

Places like this makes you reflect on relativity of things in life.
Beautiful church on an even more beautiful location. The local guide also informed us very well and added a lot of knowledge on our limited knowledge on WW1.
From the church you can continue the way up to the spring of Tolminka river and on the way up you get past a small farm selling local cheese.
We had a great day combining all.
