‪This was the third visit to the museum, it's so good to see the history of the telephone, unfortunately it will be closing down for a little while but will open again bigger and better in the near future. Something to look forward to with much more from their huge collections..‬

‪Museum of telecommunications antiquities‬

‪The Victorian Telecommunications Museum in Melbourne is open on the last Wednesday of each month, or by appointment. It displays telecommunications equipment dating from the first telephone invented by Alexander Graham Bell. The museum staff, all volunteers, appear to be all former Telstra / Telecom Australia / PMG staff. For older visitors like me the museum revived memories of telephone equipment that I used as a child. As well as old household rotary-dial telephones and public telephones there are old commercial switchboards (which I remember from the late 1970s) and a working model of old electromechanical telephone exchange equipment which was still in use in the early 1980s.The old talking clock ("At the third stroke it will be...") is there to be seen and heard. Some old mobile phones are there - imagine remembering when these were the best and latest in mobile telephony! I am thankful that there are dedicated volunteers working to preserve this essential telephony history, and I only hope that there will be others who can take over when the volunteers who spent their working lives installing and maintaining this old equipment have passed on.‬

‪What a cracking place to visit. You can track your own lifetime through the history of phones display that are presented here. I still cannot comprehend how the gentlemen, with his back to us could decipher my wifes name through her typing in morse code... amazing, and lost skill. We were fortunate to attend as part of Melbourne Open House weekend so plenty of volunteers guiding and informing. Apart from the difficulty of it rarely been open, this is a must see for, not just history buffs and museum nerds, but anyone who wants a cracking good time... very kid friendly as well. We had an absolute blast. Thanks VTM.‬

‪A great mix of high and low tech. Amazing to reflect on how phones and computers have evolved over your lifetime. Great collection, interested guides and parking outside the building, what could go wrong? Nothing, a great experience at a great price (it's free!).‬

‪Best museum in Melbourne ‬

‪I thoroughly enjoyed this museum. An amazing collection from Morse code telegraph through modern digital switching systems. Staffed by retired telecom people who show you around explaining and demonstrating the equipment. Their hours are limited so check their web site. Just one block from a train station so very easy to get to. I think everyone will enjoy this place. ‬

‪Incredible history and artifacts‬

‪It is hard to get into, but well worth the effort. It opens on the last Wednesday of the month from 10am until 3pm. Sometimes it is booked out by tour groups, so plan ahead and try to book. It is down a lane, past a gate, and up many stairs to the 3rd floor. Once inside you are in Aladin's cave of telecommunications artifacts. I was amazed to see a number of different types of telephone exchanges in use, the famous speaking clock ("at the third stroke..."), all the telephones over the last 120 years, early mobile phones, modems, public phones, telegraph and telex machines, submarine cables, and test equipment. It was hard to believe the range and depth and also the knowledge of the volunteer staff.‬

‪The kind of museum that Melbourne does best. Founded by keen volunteers to maintain a great history of telecommunications. Can only be visited by appointment on Wednesdays. Worth a visit. Very easy to get too via public transport. Located just down from glenferrie station ‬
