‪Melbourne now has the largest number of kilometres of tram routes worldwide, a title that was once held by St Petersburg i Russia.

Hawthorn Tram Depot was closed in about 1965 but the state government's VicTrack kindly stores an historic collection of older trams there.

One has to be very careful in choosing when to visit as open days are not on many days throughout the year. There is however a good website and I think Facebook page.

Carolyn in the shop greeted us. Admission is suggested to be by way of a gold coin - minimum A$1 - donation. The shop was clean and had a good range of postcards, books and other items including large posters.

The tram collection has favourites such as an L and W2 class (types on which I travelled to my Catholic school, loving every minute) and many others such as the 'toastrack' tram, former cable trams (the cable car network closed in 1940 and predated electric trams' introduction, earlier) and small 'single truck' tramcars.

There was an excellent display of the famous Melbourne Art Trams. This was airconditioned.

The trams are all beautifully restored.

Let's hope one day there's teh green light for some to operate again. Some modifications to teh overhead may be required, and franchise owner Yarra Trams would have to agree, but it's not impossible.

Well worth a visit!‬

‪Are you interested in transportation? Please check whether this museum opens during your visit. If so, you may want to check this place. This museum is small by any standard, but it has a lot of historic vehicles given the size. Staffs are friendly.‬

‪The first thing I noticed on entering the tram museum was the smell. It was a pleasant mix of oil, steel and wood.

Tucked away in an old depot, the museum and it's contents have been lovingly collected, restored and displayed. Picking up some statistics while there, I believe I now know some trivia about trams in Melbourne. Part of Melbourne's history I am very glad to have experienced.

Melbourne is now the only state capital in Australia which has retained it's trams as a means of transport in and around the city. This being said, the museum is easily reached by both tram numbers 70 and 75 from Flinders Street Station.‬

‪This was an amazing experience . The entrance fee was a donation. Entrance to the Museum was through the gift shop which was well stocked with every thing tram related , badges pins models books etc.

I think there were about 40 trams which were all perfectly restored . The great thing was that you were allowed to access the trams including the drivers seat resulting in some great photo opportunities . Plenty of information on display boards of the history the the Melbourne tram network . Plenty of helpful and very knowledgeable volunteers around to answer questions . Also audial visual presentations . A great day out !!!!‬

‪Open two Saturdays each month (2nd and 4th), admission is by donation. It is located in an old tram depot (next to a stop on routes 70 and 75) and has about 15 old model trams from 40 to 130 years old. Most are about 80-100 years old. It is not just objects, as there is a section on the people who made the Melbourne tramways what it is today, a big section on members who went to the Great War, and another on the training of drivers. The souvenir shop has a great range of tasteful memorabilia.‬
