This is a ruined castle that was once used as a fort to guard against Viking invasions as well as a residence by the Scottish king, William the Lion, during his hunts. The castle has had quite a history with several stories related to the various nobility who owned the castle, but sadly has been in ruin since the 18th century. The castle is really difficult to get to and the road leading up to it was marked private, so I had to make do with viewing from afar.

Have Visited Red Castle on a number of times in the past. Always a lovely location for taking Photographs of the ruins and the beach below.

Romantic comes to mind when I look at this ruin. It is a shame it is slowly falling apart as it has a lot of architectural charm and is in a lovely spot. Very quiet and scenic location but parking was a bit scarce. Worth the effort though.

We found the Red Castle to be a bit difficult to find, despite having mapped out the directions before we left the States. In the end, we stumbled across the right combination of roads to reach Lunan Bay and were at least able to hike the beach to get close to the Castle.
The ruin had an interesting history, from its start in the 1100s to its demise in the late 1500s when the husband of the owner, Lady Elizabeth Beaton, fell in love with the daughter of Lady Elizabeth. The good lady kicked him out, he didn’t appreciate the act and returned to destroy the Castle. It was the story that first got us interested in the site and we were excited to read that there are pull-offs along the road to allow you to hike to the Red Castle.
Sadly, we never found those pull-offs; maybe we just didn’t know what we were looking for and drove right past them. We did end up at the Lunan Beach parking lot and from the beach you can get close to the Red Castle. Unfortunately it lies across the Lunan waters and then up a steep hill. Had we more time, we would have explored our options but instead had to be satisfied with taking photos from the other side of the water.
Depending on the time of the year it may be possible to wade across the waters at low tide and there might be a way to clamber up the hill to the ruin. The only note of concern would be to monitor the tide to make sure you don’t get caught on the wrong side.

A really historic castle that is slowly falling down. It is through a little gate and up a hill but is amazing when you get there. Really historic and lots of history explained - there was no one around when we visited seems to be off the beaten track

Standing prominently overlooking Lunan bay, Red Castle lives up to its name. Take the short walk from the roadside up the hill through the narrow gate and you’re rewarded will fantastic views of the bay and beyond. Look closer up at the castle keep turrets and you’ll see how this once was an attractive and still impressive place.

This is a hidden gem of a castle! The ruin is very interesting and the views are spectacular! It looks like the whole thing will tumble into the river below at any point due to the extreme erosion of the hill, probably not while you are up there though.
The path up isn't that hard but the gate to get there might not be as easy to see. It's on the left towards the end of a residential street. It's a gate much as you see at any path but you should keep your eyes peeled. The house next to the path has an extremely lovely garden.
Unfortunately parking is an issue. There just isn't any. You can't park down by the gate because it's a private road with no public parking. I parked at a layby near a gate off the narrow road just below the street but as there is just enough space for one car I wouldn't count on it. I'm also not sure if I was supposed to be parking there anyway!
I believe there is an entrance off the beach below but I'm not positive.
The unusual access to this place ensures a fairy quiet experience. I had the whole place to myself!

The view from the derelict castle is superb and the walk down and along the beach is certainly worth it, even on a cold wintry windy day.

Nice spot for a picnic with good panoramic view of the coast, not much left of the castle but still some interesting features to ponder

We had a drive up to the Lunan Bay area yesterday, and decided to pay Red Castle (or should I say what's left of it) a visit.
Initially we were on the A92, then travelled on minor roads, and were able to get parked within about 300 yards of the Castle. There is a rough parking area at the side of the road (only enough space to park one car) where we parked, and then walked up a 'metalled' roadway which leads off the minor road up to near the Castle, as no unauthorised use of this road is permitted. You will then reach a gate, go through here, and it is a fairly short steep walk up to the remains of the Castle from this point. Not suitable for wheelchair access.
The taller part of the remains looks in rather a precarious state with an obvious crack down the centre. How much longer it will remain standing is anyone's guess.
However, glad we visited all the same, and had a good look around, an added bonus is the Castle's scenic location looking down to Lunan Bay.
Some good photo opportunities from this elevated position.
