‪I had been visited this sanctuary in the month of March and there are a lot of migratory birds particularly painted storks. There are a lot of trees in the village where we can find thousands of painted storks and few egrets. There is a big lake in the village where we can see painted storks, pelicans, Ibis, Spot duck, Comb ducks, Pond herons, and a few resident birds. There is a lake on the way back to moolakaripatti where we can spot black-headed ibis, glossy ibis, bar-headed goose, comb ducks, red naped ibis. Totally this time it is a very nice trip as I saw lot of varieties of birds‬

‪This bird sanctaury is around 26 km from Tirunelveli via Moolakaraipatti. There very limited buses that goes to koonthankulam village. But there are lot of buses to reach Moolakaraipatti. From there you need hire an auto to reach this bird sanctuary which is inside the village. You need to pay 10rs as entry fees and 50rs for the camera. There are quite good amount of birds on the tree inside the tank like painted storks,Grey Pelicans,White Ibis,Darters,Ducks etc.Inside the village there flock of painted storks on trees and you won't be tired of roaming around the village &taking photographs.‬

‪Koonthankulam can be reached by public transport and private vehicles . Tirunelveli busstand connects to Mulakaraipetti, from this point taxi and autos are available. The journey takes you 1 hour for 45 km. The alternate route from Nangurneri via Vijaynarayanam to koonthankulam is SH 89 New good quality roads for a drive. The season migratory birds arrive from October onwards. The first is the Pelicans and Ibis. Then the comb duck and bar-headed geese followed by the Painted stork. The water levels and monsoon decide the arrival and breeding season for endemic birds here. January to March is a great season to spend 4-8 hours. Coordinator Mr. pal Pandi and one more new recruit is at the sanctuary . The fencing and security for a walk is not complete and risky for a foot walk along the pathway. No eateries so better to carry water and a snack. A 20 minute walk will take you to the nearby village where you can get a connect . Birders have a watch tower and great place to relax and view birds.‬

‪The best time to visit Koonthankulam is Jan to Feb. The reservoir is flocked with these exotic migratory birds such as pelicans.
Its not a crowded place and you don't find much shops around to pick some snack. Pack and take your food.
If you are a ardent bird watcher or not it doesn't matter the moment you see these bird you will fall in love with this place‬

‪November brings in lot of rain and the tanks, small and large gets filled up with water. The bird migration season starts and the winged beauties come in flocks. From Nanguneri turn right to Mullaikkarappetty which is the nearest small town which has got eateries. From there turn right to reach Koonthakulam bird sanctuary. Waterbirds assemble in tree tops inside adjacent tanks and mudflats. You can watch Spot billed pelicans, painted storks, bar winged goose, greater flamingos, several ducks and teals etc apart from dry habitat small birds. Don't forget to take your binoculars.‬

‪Its a small hamlet located in the district of Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu state. For a change, the villagers act as the protectors of the avian friends visiting there. The birds in turn, show their trust by building nests near human settlements.
The place is a birding paradise.
Nanguneri lies in National Highway No.7 between Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari. From Nanguneri, cross the Railway levelcross, take the left turn and proceed towards Moolakaraipatti (around 14 kms). The right turn also will lead to the sanctuary .. but, its a difficult one for the novices. Just 50 metres from Moolakkaraipatti, take the right turn and it will take you straight to Koonthankulam which is just 5 kms.
The birds begin to arrive in early September. By the end of February, nesting starts. Its an amazing sight to see the painted storks and pelicans nesting just near the homes. The season ends by June last.
There's a watching tower which provides great views of the pond. You can spot several species from the watch tower itself.
The sanctuary is under the forest department and is looked after by Mr.Bal Pandi who is an avid birdwatcher. He was the man responsible to make this birding haven a sanctuary. (Google the name and you will come to know more about him).
Tips:
a. Do not blow horns or make unnecessary noices at the sanctuary. The villagers vehemently oppose such activities. So much so that they don't use loudspeakers during the breeding season. And do not harm the birds in anyway. Some photographers recently had a narrow escape as the villagers found them handling some eggs. They had to apologize and leave at once. Instances have been reported about the villagers manhandling the unruly visitors who disturbed the birds.
b. No good restaurants or eateries nearby. Take snacks . Bottled water available at Koonthankulam
c. Reach early. The road from Nanguneri to Koonthankulam itself is good in birdlife. So, have a look out while driving also.
d. No stay options at Koonthankulam. You can stay either at Tirunelveli (around 1 hr drive) which offers excellent options or you can stay at Valliyur (45 min drive) which offers moderate accommodation.
e. Try to take some vehicle having good ground clearance. The roads are bumpy at some areas.
f. The nearby areas also are good in birdlife. Serious birders should contact Mr.Bal Pandi before going there.
g. No spotting skills required to spot the painted storks and pelicans.‬
