‪We visited this site in our 2 days tour in the region. we reached the village of Eftimie Murgu (ex Rudaria) coming from Oravita. The road passes through beautiful landscape, forest. Reaching the village is like going back in time, at least for the part where the mills are. From the center of the village, near the town hall you can take the road on which you can find part of the mills. The Road is nice, goes near the river which water helps the mills work and in between some hills/rocks. Is quiet, you can hear the water and the birds singing. Is not difficult to walk as it only goes up for a short distance.
We found 2 mills open and looked at the process of turning corn to flour. We spoke with one of the so called mill owners ( in fact they are owned by several families and they make turns to the mill by a schedule). Pity that only part of them are still interested in the process. You can buy flour from there, is 5 lei the kg (1 euro), is not like the one from the store, but at least you can try to see how you grandparents or grand-grandparents were eating and in the same time you can help the locals as managing the mill is not cheap.
Depending how many mills you want to see, admire the place it can take you at least 2 hours, but it will be better to have 3 hours there.
At the end, coming back we stopped to eat some donuts, drink elderflowers juice. We also had some pancakes made of the flour grinded there and filled with jam.‬

‪In the village of Eftimie Murgu - used to be called Rudaria till 1970 - near Bozovici you shall find this unique place .. the largest water mills ensemble still working in central Europe.
There are 22 working watermills - all of those restored in 2004 - and given to the community for use. And thus become listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
As I said 22 mills - 13 in the village and 9 just outside the village that can be easily reached by a paved road and it is an easy walk from ill to mill along the Rudaria stream - the stream that provides the power to drive the millstones.
All 22 mills are fully functional - have a millstone that is driven by water , water that is collected and guided to the mills buy an ingenious system of small dams and canals. Very interesting to see.
The scenery and the Rudaria valley are very beautiful, all the mills can be visited and you can actually see corn turned into flour - or other grains, depending on the need of the locals.
At all the mills you shall find a plaque with some explanation - pity only in Romanian but nonetheless also the foreign traveler will be able to grasp the beauty of this place.
It is an underrated place and not very well know - but it is definitely worth the trip I recommend you see it for yourself. Plus - it is free of charge.‬

‪The Rudariei Watermills are in a 250-acre nature reserve in the eponymously named gorge just adjacent to the town of Eftimie Murgu. There are almost two dozen of these structures which were recently restored in 2000 and function as real mills that grind real corn for the, um, “real” local villagers. I visited with my guide during my first full day in the country. We drove up the road next to the gorge past several of the mills and stopped by the one he thought was the most interesting. It was off-season and in the early evening, so the interior of the mill was closed, however my guide was able to describe the workings of the mill and the history behind the area. We got to open one of the gates to see the horizontal fan spin and heard the grindstones move. Because the canal has a weak stream there are a series of dams and side-canals that were made to increase the power available to the mills; we viewed these further upstream. We were in a bit of a rush to get to our lodging that evening so were only able to spend maybe 30 minutes on site.

Overall, I would describe my visit here as “quite pleasant.” The local scenery stole the show, and this was another example of the journey being the destination if that makes sense. My recommendation for those reading would be to time your visit so the mills are open with a docent, but this was not an overall deal breaker for this writer. Thumbs up if you are in the area.‬

‪Visited mid September late afternoon. Which was a good thing, didn't have to beat the crowd, I literally had the whole area for myself. Yes, most of the mills were closed but this didn't spoil the charm. The beauty of this place is the settings not the inside of the mills.
There is parking in the village, cheap, I suggest park there and walk all the way up the the last mills. Some prefer to drive through the whole string of mills and hassle with finding parking on the small narrow and winding road. Don't do that. Walk, it is a nice walk through, wonderful scenery along the mills creak.
Getting there ...It is a little off from the main road but the detour is all worth it. Even the drive to the village is rewarding, through the mountains. Can't miss this place if you are around. The entire area along Road 57B towards 6 and further down to Herculane is breath taking . Some scenery that will stay with you for a long time.‬

‪This place is unique and it is on the list of UNESCO heritage. Those 22 watermills of Rudaria Valley make this location worth to see it. It is a unique place in East Europe and famous in the world. All those 22 watermills are functional and it is so fabulous to see how they work. You will find here to buy wheat flour of very good quality, and many other natural products.‬

‪It is a quite interesting experience...there are 24 old but functional watermills which are producing everyday flower for the locals. These mills are used and maintain by locals which have a monthly rotation system. As far as I know these water mills are part of UNESCO heritage.‬

‪Some mills are closed, others are open, and one or two even produce corn flour. This is something most adults might enjoy and kids will find interesting. And no matter what, the area provides great views.
There is no asphalt for a few kilometres from the main road, but the ride is decent and there are plenty of roadside spaces to serve as parking once you start finding the mills.‬

‪This is a living treasure. The mills are powered by the local streams and aquaducts. They are still in active use. Villagers brung their own corn and self-grind. All eco friendly.‬
