This weather church is very special. Not particularly large, but beautifully situated and inhabited at the time. Steep and narrow stairs to accommodations. Many spaces are now filled with local artefacts. You can also walk all the way around the complex over the covered protective wall. It does not have UNESCO status, but it is definitely worth a visit.

Fascinating to walk round this beautifully preserved fortified church. To be able to go inside the fortifications themselves and to see the numerous rooms was fantastic, we were there for about an hour and a half and our guide was very knowledgeable indeed. The church itself (which you can also go inside) is beautiful and I’d definitely recommend a visit. My photos don’t really do it justice unfortunately but will hopefully give you enough detail to see how impressive it is.

We stopped on the way to the more popular Prejmer fortified church. Wife and I personally liked Harman better than Prejmer. It is smaller but felt more accessible and trip up the bell tower is worth making. Watch out for the old stairs and steps though. They are very steep and large gaps in between some of them. It is a working clock tower so worth timing visit up not to coincide with the bells ringing every half an hour. We didn’t and were treated to a chime on the way down. It was only on the half hour so wasn’t too bad

The Saxon fortified church at Hărman (German: Honigberg) is a medieval jewel waiting to be discovered. I knew the place from a visit when I was a child, and back then I only got to see it, because a local showed it to me. Despite an extensive internet search, I could not find a tourism provider currently offering a regular tour to the site. Even the fortified church in nearby Prejmer seems to be essentially unknown. However, when you explicitly ask tour services whether they can take you to Hărman and Prejmer, which are just 10 minutes by car away from each other, they usually offer a visit. Definitely from close-by Brasov (just 20 min away), but I found two providers which took me even from Sibiu (2 hours 30 min) - and those 2 hour 30 min are totally worth it.
Hărman and Prejmer are places that you will not find anywhere else in the world. They are unique and characteristic for the Saxon culture, which fortified their churches in medieval times in order to protect and defend themselves against attacks from Hungarian and Ottoman armies. Both Hărman and Prejmer feature massive defensive walls with several strong towers covered with embrasures and machicolations, forming an impressive bulwark around a central church. In times of sieges, the peasants had their assigned rooms in the ring-wall, some of which have been restored and can be visited. The churches themselves, as expected for Lutheran Evangelical Churches, are relatively plain and unpretentious, but are decorated - as is tradition in the region - with old oriental carpets. In Hărman, those who are brave enough can climb the church tower, which is accessed from within the church through a narrow staircase and some ladders. It is definitely quite an experience!
While Transylvania hosts numerous fortified churches, many - sadly - are abandoned and in a state of advanced deterioration. Hărman and Prejmer are special as they have been meticulously conserved and maintained for future generations. Given the growing tourism in the region, particularly around Brasov, it is a pity that so few people come visit or have even heard about these sites. Due to the near complete absence of marketing, it is probably also somewhat of a self-inflicted wound.
In any case, if you are vacationing in Transylvania or driving by Brasov, do not make the mistake of not making a stop here. The Saxon fortified churches and their medieval flair are something you will only see in this region - the castle-like bulwarks of Hărman and Prejmer among the most beautiful and marvelous examples.

i hope you will be doing a combo visit to both Prejmer and Harman Churches, and
at Harmam, you get to climb the bell tower. viewing windows once at the top are limited, but the stairs/ladders involved to get up there is quite an experience
Prejmer walls reminds me a little more like troglodyte house, while the Harman walls have bigger rooms

Même principe que l’église fortifiée de Prejner. Le clou de la visite est la montée dans la tour de l’église. Attention cependant la dernière échelle n’est pas du tout safe et vous pouvez vous faire méchamment surprendre par la cloche.

This Saxon church, once ringed with three concentric walls (the outermost has now gone) is smaller than Prejmer but is better maintained. In order to enter you walk through a long passageway that pierces the inner wall, some 12m high and reinforced with seven towers lined with storage rooms on two levels. A number of rooms are well presented (a little better in our view than Prejmer) and the lady in the ticket office/gift shop also hands out an information sheet in English to take around as you go and this provides an excellent description of the attraction. It is possible to walk around about 75% of the wall perimeter and you can also gain access to the bell tower giving good views over the area although a warning, access in some areas in difficult requiring climbing of narrow stairs and ladders so the bell tower in particular is not for the faint hearted.
There are toilets inside the complex and free parking is available just outside the walls.

Bella chiesa fortificata che si contraddistingue per la possibilità di visitare la torre campanaria (attenti però che batte non solo le ore ma anche i quarti) e per la presenza delle panche del 1700, prive di schienale perché destinate alle donne sposate che indossavano abiti molto larghi. Vicina a Prejmer, le due visite possono essere agevolmente abbinate.
