‪Beautiful old Thailand, this is what coming to thai is all about , the real thai and culture.
Marvellous how they built such impressive buildings in the day . A must visit place. Good pair of shoes a must as this is a very large place .‬

‪Khmer Tower in Sakhon Nakhon ‬

‪Sakhon Nakhon is a long way from Cambodia today, but it was once a major outpost of the Angkorian Empire. Undoubtedly its finest relic from this time is Phra That Maria Cheng Weng, a sandstone tower on a laterite base. While it cannot compare to the great Khmer sanctuaries such as Phimai and Muang Tam, it is the best one in the province of Sakhon Nakhon.

The highlight here are the exquisitely carved lintels, one featuring the subjugation of a kala (a kind of demon). The crisp carving is just exceptional. Also look for the small figures of ascetics carved at the bottom of the colonettes. Be warned, however, that there is substantial damage to the roof and this is a ruin rather than a complete temple.‬

‪Could you imagine being a monk and having to climb the 496 steps to the top and or the bottom everyday? Much respect to all the blessed monks. I had to stop like 10 times. It was pretty ruff for me, I'm 53 years old. The last two set of steps is very steep, so please be careful. The view from the top is really nice The ruins is nicely intact, mostly. Take a lot of water with you, you'll need it. Quite a workout on the legs....‬

‪Phra That Narai Cheng Weng small temple and park‬

‪Phra That Narai Cheng Weng is an interesting small temple with a 1000 year old pagoda built from sandstone.
Located just 300m south of Route 22 and 2 km from Sakon Nakhon airport the beautiful garden and temple area is one of many places to visit in Sakon Nakon city and province.
With easy parking and peaceful surroundings a nice place to relax and walk around.‬

‪11th century ancient Hindu temple‬

‪Sharing premises with a modern Buddhist wat are the remains of this once Hindu temple from the 11C, Baphuon style, most likely dedicated to Siva. There are lintels on all four sides. For example, on the east side, you will see Indra seated on an elephant, on the head of a makara. Beautiful, tranquil location and a structure that would be of interest to anyone interested in Khmer architecture and Thai history.‬

‪พระธาตุนารายณ์เจงเวงอยู่ในบริเวณพื้นที่อำเภอเมืองสกลนคร คนโบราณเล่าต่อๆกันมาว่าในสมัยก่อนฝ่ายหญิงกับฝ่ายชายแข่งกันสร้างปราสาทเพื่อบูชาพระนารายณ์ โดยมีกติกาว่าต้องเริ่มสร้างต่างฝ่ายต่างต้องสร้างปราสาททีมละหนึ่งหลังพร้อมๆกัน และเมื่อถึงพระอาทิตย์ขึ้นของอีกวันหนึ่งทั้งสองฝ่ายต้องวางเครื่องไม้เครื่องมือทั้งหมดเพื่อยุติการแข่งขันและหาผู้ชนะ ตามประวิติศาสตร์กล่าวว่าฝ่ายหญิงใช้อุบายยิงพลุขึ้นฟ้าในเวลากลางคืนเพื่อให้ฝ่ายชายเข้าใจว่าฟ้ารุ่งแล้ว ฝ่ายชายจึงยุติการสร้างส่วนฝ่ายหญิงยังคงเดินหน้าสร้างต่อจนเสร็จก่อนฟ้ารุ่งพอดิบพอดีจึงกลายเป็นปราสาทหลังนี้‬
