The location is really great for the various hikes in the region. You need a car though. The cottage is by the lake. The water in the lake is shallow that causes a bit problems for a proper swimming. The cottage is very well equipped. A big plus for AC, dryer for cloths, kitchen appliances, a separate toilet, a good sauna. The cottage is made of a very typical log wood. There would be more light if some of the interior would be painted white. A lot of reindeer around the cottage; watch what they leave behind. A separate place for grilling; works fine. The minus comes from absolutely filthy and slimy pier that was cleaned during the visit after a complaint was made. This kind of not taking care of is not tolerated if you pay 840 euros per week (not linen and towels provided in this price!). This just leaves a very bad taste. The price is high and so are the expectations. Overall the shocking prices may disturb you if you happen to have bad weather (we did not). Another example: a rent of a floating sauna boat 250 euros for 3 hours!!!…
Came here with my girlfriend in the spring winter and was amazed at the nature that surrounded us. The hosts were very welcoming and answered all the questions we had, they also had all the guide booklets for the attractions available. The cottage was very close to ruka snow village and also to a market which we could buy our food. The cottages themselves were very clean and well maintained. Would definitely return!
We are a group of grandparents, children and grandchildren. Every Christmas and New Year since for about 10 years we have spent together renting a self-service cottage in some skiing location. Villa Saaruanniemi (a, b or c) is the best! We have booked our holiday here now for five times, I think. When we arrive there is a lighted Christmas tree and some decorations for the children (included). On the dining table there is a Chrismas flower and some home-made cookies. The owner had remembered our wisheds of the last year and produced kick-sledges for the kids without us even asking. And when we needed two more blankets, they were produced asap. I had asked help for finding a good Santa to visit us on Christmas Eve (the Finnish way) and ho ho ho, there he was (for 50 euros). The style of the villa is practical and stylish more than Lappish romantisism as many other rental cottages. It is easy to live there. We need all the four bedrooms and enjoy the big kitchen-living room area. The kitchen is fully equipped. We cook mostly ourselves from preparing a Christmas dinner to baking a birthday cake. We also pack some books, dvd's and cd's to entertain us after ski trips. Every holiday we have also done something else: dog and reindeer safaris, Islandic horses, fine dining in a restaurant - Ruka has a good selection of things to do. This winter our Swiss family member finally gave in and decided to try down-hill skiing. He came back totally happy: the slopes are short for someone used to the Alps but the nature is beautiful, the slopes fun and plenty and as he said, "it was all very professionally run". And the 7-year old had enjoyded her trip - the kid's slope is next to us, too. The three Villa Saaruanniemi cottages are ideally situated for cross-country skiers. Down-hill slopes with equipment rental and the bus stop for the ski bus are close enough but maybe you would not want to carry your skis there. A car of your own is recommended as the centre of the Ruka area where all the shops are is some 4 km away, and many activities are situated a bit further away. As there is also a lake, a boat and a grill, the cottages are beautifully suited for summer vacations and autumn hikers as well, but that we have not yet tried out. One of the cottages allows pets so when my old dog was still with us we always booked that.…
