I booked online with Agoda, for 11 days, having recently arrived in Darwin.... the staff that greeted me were very considerate, as I was stressed and tired and arrived just before nightfall, in the heavy rain. I had a relatively okay stay for the first 3 days, but with the heavy weather and humidity from wet season rains, the room was constantly damp; as was the general layout of the place, being very wet, dripping with the downpours... and there was a lot of additional rubbish lying around ie. old wet mattresses, dirty linen lying in heaps in the main living area, and I personally removed two bags of old shoes and clothing that was in front of the door to my room - it wasn't the best to have this mess there. The staff did some cleanup to the garden a few days after I arrived.... and one of the lady cleaners did a great job in clearing the kitchen each morning and night. But electrical appliances were mostly all broken, and the fridges were pretty grubby. What was the clincher for me on top of on-going grubbiness and wet dirty stuff lying around, plus some drug taking noted (in the main living area) was... my food was stolen and the contents inside the bags all upturned two nights in a row. Apparently, Indigenous people were climbing over the fence, and stripped out many of the guests fresh food (bread, eggs, tomatoes, vegies and meat - for me, two nights raided, food worth $40 and my bags left messed over - that was the end for me. I can handle many things in life, but not my food stolen. Additionally, I was unable to get any refund or cancellation for the remaining three nights via Agoda, which meant the backpackers Admin still got my money ($66). I've now left, three days early to live in another backpackers up the road - so much cleaner, safer and very well run. Darwin Hostel is a dump in the making, with no food security for weary travellers, and I did not find the Manager all that empathetic (he was cheery when I arrived; but argued with me as I made my complaint of the stealing, saying it was the govt problem, and the indigenous would smash thing, he couldn't do anything at all about things). Not a good thing to be told I'm wrong for feeling that way, that I had to 'accept' Darwin as is, blah blah blah... so, I tried to suggest that they lock off the kitchen or at very least, the fridges at 10:30, put a door on the room that would stop thieves...... backpackers food needs to be kept safe. And clean up the junk and mess lying around the place, the Manager needs to be more caring of people, in general. Cleanliness, having things work, living spaces being functional and safe - yes, its important. There was a locker for me, which I was grateful for, but the rest of the way the place is run, and how the physical layout is, is only good for a short term solution to needing a place to sleep for a night or two at most. The place needs serious TLC and, cleanup, plus more security for the kitchen.…
The manager is very rude, we had a problem on the check in as we did it online for 2ppl per two nights. We arrive there and they had only one reservation for one persone for one night. So no problem we booked at the moment. At the moment of the check out we ask for our bond back and they have only 1 bond so we had to watch through the security camera to check if we gave the bond. Then we realised we have been charged 120$ and said to the manager that as we did the booking there it should be 85$ or something(i don't know why the difference online and at the hostel is like 30$ to 25$) but the manager insisted we did it online. And at the end he said "so what did u have another place to stay?!" It was very rude and on top of that they didn't put as with one friend of us even was beds available and the toilets aren't clean as the showers and some of them is without light and everytime i needed the reception there was nobody there!…
I recommend a stay at Darwin Hostel. Its very close to the center, nice pool, friendly staff and quiet in the night to sleep. The mattresses and equipment are of good quality Organised meals allow you to meet new people I really enjoyed my time there!!
With a relaxed social atmosphere and regularly organised activities and a central location, what's not to like about this relatively cheap hostel. Ok, the rooms and the fridges could definitely be cleaned occasionally, but there's a pool and aircon to forget the heat of the city, so it kind of balances out, right?
