Several years ago now I reviewed some accommodation provided by the Jagiellonian University for guests of the university visiting Krakow (the S. Pigoń Guesthouse). On a recent visit to Krakow I stayed in another of their properties - the Floriańska Guesthouse. I have stayed here before a long time ago but did not take the opportunity to review it previously. This property is located within the old city and immediately that you step outside you are there among the street hustle and bustle.
As with the other accommodation previously reviewed the rooms are relatively simple, clean and tidy and in this instance with a separate brightly lit bathroom with a shower cubicle. Our room contained a double bed, flat screen TV (mostly Polish channels), desk and wardrobe with some outside illumination from a window in the roof – more on that later. The room was very well insulated, to such an extent that it was too warm in a mild October and there was no way unfortunately of switching (the culprit), the storage radiator off. There were nice touches too in that a hair drier was provided and tea, kettle and cups also for your arrival, together with complimentary bottled water. Because of the heat we were forced to leave our bedroom window open and as a consequence we were woken by the sound of nearby building work every morning. Notwithstanding this, in normal circumstance the room would have been just fine.
Checking in was simple with pleasant staff and it was easy to come and go as you pleased. The breakfast was of a simple style, fruit juice, cereals, cold salad fare and cheese, some very tasty brown bread which was excellent toasted and tea or coffee. My one criticism of the small breakfast room (in the basement) was that it really could do with some soundproofing. It was unbearably noisy when full with younger guests - tiled floor, painted walls, no curtains or soft furnishings to absorb the sound which simply bounced off everything! Having said that the breakfast staff were charming and very polite.
Returning briefly to the window in the roof, the blind there is not sufficient to block out all of the light so you tended to be woken earlier in the morning than you might otherwise be – an indication to avoid a top floor room in future.
Despite the shortcomings which I have described, I would be more than happy to return as all things being equal, the accommodation has a superb location and in normal circumstances the bedrooms would be pleasant places to retreat to in a busy city.
I have been to Krakow many times and it was a pleasure to sit in the park area that surrounds the old city, watching families enjoying walks together with their children and grown up children on a Sunday. To see also children doing what children the world over do but having respect for their parents reminded me of an era that seems to have drifted away from ‘the’ island that sometimes stands aloof from the rest of Europe.
