- PLEASE TAKE NOTICE I TRAVELED BEFORE 2014 -
Stayed here as flight attendant for several months and the place started to feel like home. We knew all the staffs names and they knew ours by heart. It's true that things have changed considerably in the last 4 years in the country, however I stayed in other hotels in Libya near the same time and non could compare, even if newer. Sometimes service is everything. It was furnished in an old fashion, even back then, but still truly clean and taken good care of, and extremely comfortable and the rooms were spacious with great bathrooms. I think that if things continue pretty much the same, there's possibly not many hotels in Tripoli to beat Diplomatic. Walking distance from the Green Square and close to many amenities.

First stayed here in Jan 2012 and the staff were really helpful, some things were not working but they made every effort to fix or find an alternative. I understood that following the revolution things would take time to get better and if I wanted 5 star I could pay for it elsewhere..... Saying that, on my return in March 2012, they had hiked the rate and tried to get 150 LD which I bartered back to 125 (120 in Jan) and the friendly service had disappeared. No hot water no Internet a 2 hour wait for the cafe staff to get us a coffee. If you complain you get a shrug. Thete are worse places that will rip you off for more but there are a load of hotels on this street or in this area that will give you considerably better for the same price.
The Borg Almadena 50m towards the main street (Omar mukhtar) is much better-if u ask nicely they will give u 140/130 LD per night and everything works it is bigger and cleaner and they are great staff.

The hotel is conveniently located in walking distance to the Green Square and the old town.
Breakfast is good although nothing special.
The staff is very friendly and helpful. The rooms are rather small but reasonable sized.
The gym is simply crap - instead of offering something like that, they should simply tell, that they don't have one - that would not be as embarrasing. The gym in total has appr. 10 sqm and "offering" appr. 5 different machines, of which most are not connected to electricity (in case they would require). The standard of the machines is appr. of the early 70s (20 century). The seat of the bike could not be fixed on a position suiting my hight.

As a family we arrived in Tripoli with some trepidation of what we might find. It is not the prettiest city in the world and in July it was blisteringly hot. Our visas and hotel had all been arranged by Fessano Tours who were simply brilliant and made the whole experience simple and straightforward. Cant speak highly enough of them.
They arranged for us to stay at the Deplomatic hotel (not a spelling error this is how it was often spelt). Not knowing the city it seems a bit out of the way but actually it was not far from a main street which leads to the waterfront. The hotel is relatively new and was clean and comfortable. They had arranged for mattresses for each of the kids while my wife and I had a simply enormous double bed. The room had a good view of the city and the bathroom was one of the best equipped I have ever had in a hotel. Jacuzzi bath and a sauna/steam shower. It was fantastic.
English was good and the staff could not have been more friendly or helpful. They took a particular interest in the kids who had a ball being fussed over at every turn. Food was quite adequate but the choice was not very extensive. That said, when the staff noticed that our kids were not eating they produced burgers and chips without any prompting from us. Try getting that in a European 4 or 5 star hotel!
We had a tour of the city the following day again all arranged by Fessano and again without incident. Everything they said they would do was done without a hitch and always on time. The hotel allowed us some extra time to check out ,again without fuss. There was free WIFi in the lobby area but not in the rooms which under the circumstances and location was more than we had expected. I was able to use it without a hitch to check-in on line for our flight.
Tripoli may not be on everyone’s top 10 destinations and the infrastructure is far from perfect for tourism. It is also very expensive for what you get, but I suspect most people going there understand why. All in all however the Deplomatic Hotel and all their staff certainly know how to look after guests and while they may not have much what they did offer was done with a genuine desire to please. They and Fessano, are doing a great job in opening up this country to the world and I hope more people will take the opportunity to visit. From the construction work I saw while there, there will be many more hotel options in the future and this may in some way bring prices down and help open things up further.
