Actually I visited in 2008 but I am still thinking of this beautiful place. This was like having an island to ourselves. Stayed with tiare and loved her place and food. Played tennis with here while islanders looked on and cheeered.

This place is wonderful. Don't come here expecting everything to do according to plan - because it won't. This is the Outer Islands, so there isn't always hot water, or a varied menu, or other things you might be used to in the West, or even on Rarotonga. The cottages are run by the busiest pair I have met in a very long time. Tangata is the island's Constable. When he's not doing that, he's maintaining the grounds of the Cottages, or doing an island tour, or mowing the entire school rugby field with a hand mower. Understandably, it took him hours. Teata, his wife, is busier again. She is principal of the island's school, AND it's maths teacher, AND on the tourist board, AND sits as a Magistrate in the local courts, AND is an elder in her church, AND cook for the Cottages. I started my stay at O Kiva, which has a hot shower, and a loo, basin, microwave, kettle, toaster, comfortable bed, and a beautiful view off the cliffs behind the cottage, with chairs and sun loungers - and it was all to myself. Because the High Commissioner was coming, I had to move down to Ma'aru, with no hot shower - get a couple of buckets off Teata and Tangata, and fill them with hot water instead, but the bed was comfortable, and you are more or less next to their house, and across from the dining room, so it's in a convenient location. We ate tuna, chicken, potatoes, papayas, plantains (sweet, unlike any I had had before), and a few tomatoes. All of them were well cooked, and the fish and papayas were beautifully fresh. I brought bread and cheese with me, as Teata had asked, and the local store keeps expensive chocolate biscuits, to satisfy cravings. Conversation was interesting, and covered a wide variety of topics. Tangata and Teata have both lived in New Zealand for many years, and are well travelled. Please note, Tiare Holiday Cottages does NOT accept credit cards, so you will need to bring all the money needed with you. If you ask Tangata nicely, he may let you have a look at his library. He has a fascinating Pacific Collection, including a Doctoral Thesis on the nearby site of Anai'o, one of the only villages found in the Cooks before the Missionaries arrived - the people tended to live in small groups of houses scattered around their food plots before this, rather than an actual village. One of the basalt stones found had been buried and carefully hidden from fellow villagers, centuries ago, as it is very scarce on Ma'uke. He also has other books on the islands which are difficult, if not impossible, to find, even on Ebay. Bikes are available - I took the pushbike because I can't do scooters, and it was a LONG way around the island! Another day, Teata let me come to school with her. I presented a class on mental health - and I am still not sure if the kids were laughing in confusion, or amusement, or perhaps both, when I pretended to be a manic patient, proclaimed myself to be the "King of Ma'uke" and proceeded to order their principal around like nothing on earth... The people are very kind, and I found myself invited to Pentecost - when I hadn't the faintest what Pentecost might be and in the end I had to say so... (It's the day when the Holy Spirit descends on the disciples, for other people who need to know that, on this island where everything is centred on the churches.) It would be hard to find kinder hosts. No matter how busy they are, they always made time for a chat. Kia Manuia, Meitaki Ma'ata.

We had a wonderful stay on Mauke, it is an unspoilt, friendly and very relaxing place. We stayed in O' Kiva Cottage which is one of the Tiare Cottages. Ta met us at the airport with a beautiful neck garkland, he and Teata are warm and very helpful hosts. The cottage was well appointed, with a front veranda, it is isolated, located near the sea and you could hear the pounding surf which lulled you to sleep each night. We were the only Europeans, we walked and cycled around the island (18 kms), we attended a church service on the Sunday and the singing was beautiful. We swam at the beaches and coves dotted around the island. We were taken on a drive around the island and gathered fresh fruit for dinner. There are two small shops where we bought food, we had forgotten to bring food from Rarotonga. There is a communal kitchen and we ate really good evening meals with Teata and Ta each evening. We attended the school where Teata is principal and it was wonderful to meet the boys in one of her classes and hear the boys singing. After Mauke we flew to Aitutaki via Rarotonga. We were pleased we had visited the outer island of Mauke first as it was unsophisticated and it would have given us a limited view of the Cook Islands if we had only seen the more tourist islands of Rarotonga and the Aitutaki. Ta and Teata farewelled us with beautiful leis and head wreaths. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

My seven nights here on Mauke flew by and all too soon I was back at the little airport, saying my farewell to Teata and Ta. It was with sadness that I returned to the bustle of Rarotonga, my beautiful ei to remind me of the love and attention these two remarkable people shower upon their guests. Staying in O Kiva cottage on the clifftop was a joy. The cottage is clean, well equipped and very comfortable, with the luxury of hot water and fly screens all round. Total peace and privacy abound, with your own access to the lookout from which to view passing humpback whales (from July through to November, Ta says). Mauke is not spoiled by a high volume of traffic, or modern buildings and shops. There are two stores on the island, stocking most basics and some fresh produce daily, so it is sensible to bring special dietary items with you. (Phone Teata beforehand and she'll advise you on what to bring. Don't forget the Vogels and cheese for them!!) It is possible to spend all day visiting coves and white sandy beaches without meeting a soul. This place is not for those who want night life and consumerism. It is a tranquil, welcoming place with a wonderful holiday guaranteed at Tiare Cottages. Teata and Ta were so helpful and congenial, with shared meals most evenings and the opportunity to taste traditional fare. A great holiday is as much a choice of location as it is the friendliness of the hosts, and for this reason 10/10 has to be awarded to these two who are doing a fabulous job of ensuring the comfort of their guests. It is also rather exhilarating to know you are the only tourist on an island that has a circumference of only18kms, where everyone knows you are there, almost before you arrive! It's a holiday I won't forget in a hurry and, somehow, I think I'll be back!

You’ll leave Mauke with a sense of sadness - and a clear idea that you’ll return one fine day. Simply because a stay with Ta and Teata at Tiare Cottages, is an experience you won’t easily forget. At the airport we were picked up by Ta, who welcomed us with a beautiful “Eikato” (flower garland for the head) that is so typical for Mauke. We stayed at the O’Kiva cottage, which lies in a nice and quiet place in the middle of the green, leafy bush, just a short walk from the reef. A small path led down to our own platform, where there was a stunning view of the reef and the sunset in the far horizon. Our hosts, Ta and Teata, are very friendly people, and they really made our stay on Mauke something very special. There was homemade, tasty, local food for dinner every night, and long evenings with just talking and singing. Teata and Ta know the island from the very inside. They are familiar with the local culture, the history and legends of Mauke. The tour with Ta around the island, to the bush, the makatea and the caves, i a great experience. There are lots of nice things to discover on your own as well. Hire a motorbike and get around to some hidden, beautiful beaches, and to the nice, small villages. People are welcoming, they greet you and would love to have a chat with new visitors. We’ll be back for sure, - even though we’ll have to travel all around the world!
