In January 2007, I decided to travel with my girlfriend Christina to Corryong in Northeast Victoria for two reasons, one, I was born there many years ago and wanted to show Christina where I was born and two, I wanted to ask her to marry me in a spectacular romantic place. Corryong is at the base of the Snowy Mountains, right on the border of Victoria and New South Wales, and there is a reasonable range of accommodation, but we eventually decided to stay at The Ridge at Towong, about 5 minutes outside of the town of Corryong. The moment we saw our accommodation we knew we had made the right choice.......
The Ridge is set up on a ridge (hence the name :)) about 400m above the surrounding countryside and affords breathtaking views over the Murray River and the normally (was quite dry while we were there)lush green dairy land it meanders through. The self-contained unit we stayed in was immaculately presented, recently built with all the conveniences you could imagine: Air Con, great kitchen facilities, huge bathroom, decking with brilliant views and a barbeque that we made great use of. I must make special mention of the quality of the furnishings, especially the bed, which was so comfortable we wanted to take it home with us! The Ridge is owned by Mark and Sharon Davies (Mark is a builder and the quality of his work is obvious in the accommodation) who are a wonderful couple who will provide as much help as you require while still allowing you to have your privacy. They live in their beautiful house about 200m away, and as part of the deal, all guests can use their magnificent pool, which has views over the Snowy Mountains and is absolutely magic in the heat of summer. There is also a great swimming hole a short walk down the road. There is quite a lot to do around this area, the Nariel creek provides some of the best trout fishing in Australia and it's only a short drive to the Snowy Mountains where you can see the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme(http://www.snowyhydro.com.au) and then travel on to Thredbo (one of Australia's premier ski resorts). Or just go for a walk along some of the many beautiful creeks and marvel at nature's beauty. For the cost (from around $80 per night depending on when you stay), this would have to be one of the best places we have ever stayed. We will be back! In summary, if you would like to stay in a beautiful, romantic spot where you can get away from it all and just take in the superb views while relaxing in 5 star comfort, The Ridge is the place to do it. And by the way, she said yes!
