This cosy Georgian cottage has the most fantastic location and if that is the most important issue, as it almost was to us, then it is a great find. Everything is nearby, including a great coffee house, two parks, reasonable parking which came with a permit, and museums, shops and restaurants.
However, unmentioned by the holiday agent or website, the kitchen is in a basement reached by very narrow and steep stairs, which proved very difficult for problem knees and any form of movement difficulty. I would consider lack of mention of this to be highly remiss of the holiday company and the owners. I had to crawl up the stairs moving anything I was carrying in front of me one step at a time. The house was also seriously damp, amusingly referred to by the owners in a number of stickers asking for visitors to open windows and run fans to cope with the ‘condensation’. The smell of must and damp has had to be washed out of everything we took with us.
We did have a problem in the week with the noise of a fan inside the walls, which the owner did sort for us, as it was an air handling unit. More damp denial, as there was no switch. Sleeping in a house that sounded like an aircraft cabin was not fun, but remedied by the fuse being removed. It is a pity that the defence for this was simply that nobody else had complained.
The facilities in the house were good, although we would have preferred better lighting, and it was clear the website photos had been considerably lightened. The servicing had only left us one loo roll although even in the visitors book it pointed out that others had also been miffed at paying several hundred pounds and then having to buy their own loo roll.
If your stay is an outdoorsy one, simply using the house as a base then it is great.
I will be watching with interest to see if the advertising next year shows any honesty about the stairs. As a person with arthritis this was absolutely not acceptable and we were very unhappy to have been misled. The other issues were not deal breakers, but I would say we were somewhat surprised how unlike the publicity the house turned out to be, the worst credibility gap we have ever experienced.
