Bircin (or Birjin) Hotel is strategically located in the very centre of Dohuk, at the corner of Kawa Road and Cinema Nawrouz Street. It is very easy to find and the building itself is a landmark near the Bazaar/Souq area. That said, taxi drivers do not tend to know the name of the place.
Officially run as a 4 star, it would surely not deserve this according to European standards. However, Kurdistan is not yet rich in upmarket hotels and the Bircin certainly is one of the best choices in town. According to tourist guides, the place was built in 2005.
Breakfast was relatively copious in choice and included in our very affordable rate, yet there was only tea and no coffee available. We were positively surprised about the low rate and the fact that European toilets were available in our rooms (no squat toilets like in many other hotels in town). Also, most rooms have a view of several parts of Dohuk. We were allowed to stay in our rooms till 1pm and then left our luggage at the reception.
On the downside, the lack of shower curtains turned the bathroom into a second Persian Gulf and the carpet tiles in the bedroom had not been hoovered for a long time. Linen was ok, the beds were a bit loud and not too comfortable. Like almost all hotels in the region, this hotel does not have a website.
At check-in, one of the employees was able to speak German. English was not spoken here, and Syrian Arabic not properly understood.
All these comments have to be put into perspective: Kurdistan is not yet a holiday destination for Westerners, and therefore there hardly any tourist infrastructure is available. The Bircin gives you the comfort of a safe place where people are friendly, yet a bit shy and language skills can be a problem, like everywhere in Kurdistan.
Very good to know: one of the main long-distance taxi stands is just a few yards away from the hotel entrance and you will easily find onward transportation to other cities within Iraqi Kurdistan, within the rest of Iraq, as well as to Turkey, Damascus, Qamishli, Amman and even Beirut.
